Injusticia racial (Concurso 144) Racial Injustice (Contest 144)

Racial injustice: no matter how people approach this, inequality still happens, women of color are vulnerable and not given the same opportunity that was promised.

Racism still exists and it will never cease to exist; but thank God it has been mitigated a lot and here in Cuba it is quite scarce, although unfortunately I have suffered a little. Since I was a child, I had to see how they chose other classmates for activities or to represent the school because they were white and had straight hair and I wasn't, and here white girls are considered prettier than black girls. It was hard to see teachers pick others over me because of their race even though I was much smarter, educated, and better behaved than most of them.

Sixth grade graduation party. That was the first time I got my hair straightened.

Constants have been the ridicule that I have endured for having afro hair and since I was 12 years old I had to go to have my hair laced; but a few months ago I made the decision not to do it anymore and to let my natural hair grow, which is going to be a long process and I am going to be very happy.

I often have to hear the classic comment that blacks don't do anything smart, we're more vulgar, and we don't do anything useful. A few days ago, chatting with my boyfriend (@crismr) he told me that several guys he knows have told him that black women are good at having sex; but not to start a family because "we don't know how to think".

Although it is true (taking my country as a guide to issue my criteria) that the vast majority of those who are black tend to be less civilized than whites; but when analyzing this issue, it is not taken into account that we are years behind due to slavery and since we continue to not provide them with the same opportunities as whites, we are not advancing as we should. Although the laws here protect blacks and proclaim equality, the reality is quite another.

Don't let them oppress or reject you because of your race. Show that you can be a civilized, educated, and good person regardless of whether you are black, Asian, Jewish, Aboriginal, white, or any race.
