TACO TUESDAYS : CHONGQING GRILLED FISH

It's TACO TUESDAYS time!!!

So today topic as you can read on my subject above... What??? Ching Cong Fish?

Just kidding, don't get too personal with that.

As it names ring to your ear, definitely this is a Chinese cuisine. Chongqing was a part of Sichuan province, although currently it is not anymore due to economical and political issue there. In general Chongqing cuisine is similar or maybe I should say the same as Sichuan cuisine, which they are famous for their spicy Chinese food.

If you googling or ask GPT what's Chongqing Grilled Fish is, they will say these:

Chongqing-style grilled fish, also known as 烤鱼 (kao yu), is a dish with over two thousand years of history and was thought to be both served in imperial courts and eaten by fishermen in ancient China.

I will make this one simple, basically this is a grilled fish then served in hotpot. So you have the crispy and smokey aroma in the fish while having it like a soup.

If you can not imagine how it will taste like, then it means you have to try it at least one in a life time

TAN-YU RESTAURANT

So a couple weeks ago I took my parents to have this Chongqing Grilled Fish. They are in their seventies, so at least once in their lifetime they have an experince having this ChongQing Grilled Fish even though I know well it would kill my bank account.

The place I picked was this Tan-Yu Restaurant. It is a very famous brand from Singapore, it's their first outlet here in Jakarta. I did not know how it would taste, the reviews were equally divided between happy praises and rants. So I could only hope it would not end as a disappointment.

First they gave us this a free snacks. Seems all were cheap ones, but the taste was not that bad.

I am usually strict at limiting what my parents could eat and drink, but I let them had some beers that night. It's been months since their last drink, so I guessed it's ok for that time.

And this was my drink, a grape frost. It tasted great, of course for a $4 drink here I would go to their kitchen to scold their chef if that one tasted bad.

IMG20241019185334.jpg

This was my order list. I showed it on my friend whatsapp group and all laughed. It's funny you know... you go to Sichuan restaurant and order food with "NO SPICY" tag everywhere. My parents could not eat anything hot and spicy food, they preferred sweet, sour or salty.

THE FOOD

IMG20241019190747.jpg

So this was how our main dish presented. It's a grilled fish in a hotpot, so that would be easier to understand than some sentence about 2000 years food bla bla bla.

There were some alternative for the soup. We ordered the soy soup which was the non spicy one although it's the least ordered one. Most people came here for the green pepper soup, but that was a scary spicy one, a true Sichuan style soup.

I let my mother to set and served this this to everyone. She was happy about it, I guessed it gave her some nostalgic feeling about what she used to do when I was still a little kid and we went out for a dine out.

IMG20241019191114.jpg

So this was what I had in my personal bowl. Sorry for the lack of sharpness, the lighting in that restaurant was not bright so I really had trouble in taking shots.

IMG20241019191106.jpg

I was the noodle man, so I went with noodle. My family preferred to have this meal with white rice.

IMG20241019190234.jpg

This was the rice cake I ordered. It had white rice and brown rice made into a Japanese Omochi style rice cake. It was very soft and you could eat them without having to chew them. The taste was excellent!

IMG20241019191421.jpg

This was Grilled Shitake with thick garlic. @gwajnberg should try this, the taste was very good.

IMG20241019191434.jpg

My father often made funny order like this... Seriously some Lamb skewers? The taste was not bad, but compared to others which were excellent and very good, this not that bad one felt like a meh....

IMG20241019191415.jpg

I ordered a scallop and an oyster, however my father snatched the oyster before I took any picture of it. This was ok, at least better than that grilled lamb.

The last one was this. Grilled egg plant which looked like a bone marrow LoL. It tasted great initially, however it's served on a hot plate so later on you could taste some singed or scorched taste if you eat it later.

Ok that's all what I share in this Dine-In occasion. Sorry if I could not take all the shots in the best way due to lighting.

Overall their menu are grilled based, and they focus on the garlic condiment and seasoning. I would say the taste is great, and I stick to what I have said above... At least once in a life time you must try this one once.

Note: It costed me more than $100

Extra Community Engagement

Recently I mentioned something in Freecompliments discord, it's about how to increase engagement between members. Well I planned to make some giveaways but not as usual as before.

in my last TACO TUESDAY here:

https://inleo.io/@dewabrata/taco-tuesdays-classic-japanese-cuisine-8ye

there was a trivial question about this dish

IMG20241013142346.jpg

It seemed none notice it or maybe its too difficult to answer. The question is simple, what vegetable is it? not the paprika, onion nor garlic there. The one that looks like oily noodle there.

I am rewarding 1 HSBI to anyone who can guess it... Again I remind you all this is not raffle, I mean if 10 people can guess it, it will be 10 HSBI for the total reward. If 2000 people can guess it, I will run away from HIVE LoL

I will leave a comment "It's A Wrap" If I think the time for taking HSBI recipients is over.

Anyway…nice reading your blogs after a long time. You’re a very intelligent, loving mom. I respect you a lot, very pretty too.

Well… that noodle stuff, looks like noodles, but if its not noodles…then its raddish… ha!! Surely not…anyway.

I understand how its smoky grilled stuff, I am glad you guys enjoyed it. I could only take your grape juice, rice cake and egg plant and rice if I had been with you coz I don’t eat non-veg, except when eating one bite of chicken piece, to see if its good for the dogs…
Nicely articulated post! …

But for me its mostly like your French and I am another maybe English… because most of the dishes are dishes whose taste I can’t image…. Indonesian style I guess.

I am always that person, who noticed your friend, the fly in one of the street food toca salids if you remember!

Delightful stuff… stay well!!
