I am not (too) interested...

I do not have anything against social media. I find that social media has its positive effects and negatives like everything else in the world. My problem is the people who abuse it, or let us say, the people who are religious about it.

Ever since I got to understand what social media is to even be signed on one, I have met all sorts of people. In fact, I met people offline thanks to Facebook, but those people are now faded along with the years. In today’s world, Social media is more of an asset than it is disadvantageous. Thanks to social media, we have limitless opportunities, a whole world of news and all but this does not remove the fact that social media also has its cons.

Places like X (formerly twitter) and YouTube give content creators the opportunity to earn all the while building an audience too. Facebook too with its limitless accessibility and then the market, which serves as a platform for local and international businesses. Honestly, social media has done us many good too.

Many protests and activism have been very impactful through social media. If you take the time that Nigerians in the Diaspora took to social media to show their support with those of us protesting here. In fact, whenever the government want to shut up the youths, they attack our medium, which is social media. Thanks to this engine, there have been undeniable changes to world economy.

Still, I cannot ignore all the harm it does no matter the good. People would say that the harm was not as much as the good but how do we even know that? Social media is now influenced by social wannabes and people who sell lies for a living. Social media is filled with people who always want to tell you how to live your life, when they have not fully figured out theirs.

If there is one thing that puts me off social media is all the advice and opinions everyone seems to have. We are carried away by the dazzling life of these people and forget that systems work differently, people are not the same and it is not always greener on the other side. It is so easy to go on social media and compare people. Compare ourselves…

Social media will always be a great innovation to me; I do not have anything against it. I just get irked by the people who let it – or rather, the people on it – influence them and they come back to real life with bizarre expectations and beliefs. They let what they see on Social media be the pioneer of how they act, think, communicate, and lately I find myself being more put off by these people. I cannot even pretend to like them or stand them because, unconsciously, they have let all the trash they soaked in be the driving force of their lives.

I deliberately avoid social media. I deleted my accounts on TikTok and Instagram because I realized that I just waste my time and money. I am hardly on WhatsApp these days either because nothing for me there. These days, I will float where I actually gain something and while I have many of my people on WhatsApp, you will mostly find me on Discord… sue me! I go on X once a while but for job search. Useless banter on a space with mostly “cruise” heads is as irritating as it sounds. Therefore, unless I have a legit reason to be there, you will not find me there. Maybe someday, my P.A would handle all these trivialities. As for me, I am not interested.

Anyway, social media can be fun but it is not what life is about. If I am bored, there are books. However, I do indulge myself in watching crime documentaries and/or stories. So, it is either the Facebook videos where some of my favourite Crime content makers lay or YouTube to catch up the latest episode.

One needs to be very cautious when using social media, although it has its own perks like you've rightly stated.
It helps us to stay informed, entertained and so much more but if used wronglt it can cause us ruin.

Social media just like everything else in life, have their pros and cons but most importantly, self control is advisable in the usage of these social platforms.
I use them only when there's a need to, and not get enslaved by them.

I really like your take on social media. It is the same for me in a lot of ways.
First off, I can't remember when last I spent time on Instagram, Twitter, or even Facebook. I too take it as a serious waste of my time. When there are a lot more productive things I can do with my time.

Although sometimes I do visit TikTok and YouTube (even a lot) when I am exhausted, and I can't find sleep immediately. WhatsApp is where I have my friends, work, school, and my volunteer group chats, so I can't do without that one.

Yeah I feel you. I can’t do without WhatsApp either but mostly because people I care about stay there and refuse to migrate to discord.

That's true. Letting the people on social media influence you is the shtick there. You need to understand that as the next person knows practically nothing about you, the influencer on social media has even bigger secrets. Touched this topic aptly, my love. Well-done.❤️🥰

I mean you already know I struggle with x and I’m not on most social media spaces. This is exactly why. I don’t understand why a level 200 student has the effrontery to say his or her mind about someone’s marriage, about someone’s pregnancy journey. Level 200? Instead of you to be thinking about your gpa.
