Who gets my money in the clerrrb? (and #LPUD)

Tipping is one of the topics I shy away from talking about because as much as I hate to admit it, I don’t put that much of a smile on service peoples’ faces when they meet me. I mean sure, I’m funny and all, but funny doesn’t cut it in these settings.

I think that the topic of whether to tip or not is a bit controversial. Tipping is a nice gesture and I hope everyone who can do it, does it for sure, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to say it should be mandatory to tip every time you’re rendered a service. I say this taking a few things into consideration.

Is a tip warranted?

Why do you think employees are paid salaries at their jobs? It’s cos they do a certain job, no? Well that’s the same way tipping works. No matter how generous people are, they won’t just give you their money for nothing. The bottoms of peoples' hearts are too deep for anything to come from it these days. Today, if you want to be given money, you have to offer some sort of service. For tipping specifically, you need to offer exceptional service. There are over 10 waitresses in the bar serving drinks. Why should I tip YOU in particular?

It’s how memorable you make my visit there for me.

Oh btw, “keep the change” absolutely counts as tipping in my book. That’s extra money you wouldn’t have been getting, so yeah. The last time I tipped someone (not keep the change, but actually tipped someone) was I think at a restaurant I went to with a friend. The waiter we met showed us a nice private and well-furnished spot to sit in, and we had a fun chat with him in our time there. He told us about how they have a delivery service and that if we ever want, we can use that instead of coming. Now, I get that you might say that he was marketing to us, but I saw that as someone that was trying to relieve us of a pain, and also someone who was able to build good engaging rapport with people. Really, he was great, so I tipped. See how that worked?

Next to consider about tipping?

Yes. Baba, don’t force yourself. You know that that 10 cedis is your last coin, but you want to follow crowd to play Odogwu. Wob3wu. 😂

Listen, bro. Cut your coat according to your size. If you have enough money to tip, please do it and do it well, but by all means, don’t play yourself. If you can’t afford it, at least you had the intention. Maybe instead of money, tip with compliments. Tell them how much you enjoyed their service, and how great they are at their job. That's what I did for this room service result. Might be better than the small 10 cedis you would’ve tipped them to go home and suffer in addition anyway.

But say you’re indeed who you think you are, and you want to tip. How do you choose who to tip if several people served you?

First, you can do what I discussed earlier – tip who gave you the best experience: that’s just value for money, right?

Another thing you can consider is to look among them and select the person you think is having the least pleasant day. Pure kindness. Say Karen and Susan both served you, but you notice that Karen is getting all the tips cos all the mandem just can’t resist her nyash for instance, tip Susan – she doesn’t deserve to go home tipless just cos her ass is inclined at 90 degrees.

In the end, the fact remains that the discretion to tip remains the tipper's, but it’s good to know when to do it and when not to.
