Gambling: A Desperate Game for Survival

Everyone is in on way or the other a gambler. Usually, when you hear gambling, the first thing that comes to mind is risk. This risk, however, is usually associated with money. But that’s not all gambling is about. In the context of this post though, we’re going to consider it that way, unless I say otherwise. The truth stands that gambling can either be the only thing standing between you and wealth, or it can be the fuck up that thrusts you so deep in financial ruin that you wish you never looked for shortcuts. Lol I won't lie though, I've seen people hit the jackpot with these things and it's been wild! They're bad, but they pay. 🙂

I have a few friends who gamble – sports betting. They would prefer I don’t call it gamble, but let’s not call a spade a spoon. I might not agree with sports betting, but I certainly don’t think they’re worst people on earth because they bet either. That’s because I have other friends who do worse, and comparing the two, this makes sport betting childs play. That in fact reminds me of something I happen to have come across a few days ago on social media.

I don’t remember the theory I’m about to explain, and I’m probably going to replace a lot of the variables here with my own equivalents of what was used in the experiment.

So basically, two men call them A and B, decided they had enough of their wife, and decided they wanted to kill her. A poured grease (or something like that) into her drink, basically poisoning her to death. For B, his wife pour grease into her tea herself, mistaking it for honey, and he watched her drink it. Both men killed their wife, they just did it differently. But if I asked you, you’re likely to say that B is a better man than A. That is you classifying their crimes according to degree of “evilness”. That is what I was saying. Sports betting is bad, but there are worse cases of gambling.

For the average person, Gambling is never merely for fun.

A lot of people (the average people) gamble not because they find it fun, but because of their need for survival: to meet ends meet. However, like many other guilty pleasures, the longer people do it, the more addictive it gets. So even the average person might start out gambling simply to make ends meet, to getting a kick out of it. Some of my friends who do sports betting will admit to it. I had a friend tell me sometime back that at this point, he was betting because he was just addicted to the hope that an active running slip that might win gave him. This was his kick.

Have I gambled before?

If sports betting counts, then yes, otherwise, no. See, when I was in Uni, I went through a certain period of…what’s the term….financial hardship (?) is the closest thing I can remember. In this period, even though I didn’t like sports or sports betting for that matter, I learned how sports betting worked. I guess you could attribute my getting into it a bit to my sports betting friends. But how I was sports betting without watching football at all or knowing anything in sports other than Ronaldo and Messi is a mystery we’ll solve together some day hopefully.

Betting without knowing the game you're betting on lol. I think for the most part, life in itself can be seen as a gamble, in that we're taking risks constantly about unknown future outcomes. Given that it can easily get addictive, I try to stay away from all sorts of gambling as much as possible.

Sports betting is something that's kinda too scary for me to indulge in.
I've seen a lot of people being driven to a state of insanity because of it
