Brain Fog and Inclement Weather

The "weather people" are telling us that there is a massive cyclone sitting over the north Pacific, not far from the Washington coast.

I'm not typically given to worrying about the weather, but this low pressure core is evidently close to the lowest that has been measured here since they started keeping records in the 1890s.

Thankfully, the hurricane force winds and torrential rains are mostly going to be out to sea and in the mountains, but we're still expecting a rough night around here. Of course, this area is prone to all sorts of micro-climates, which is why it sometimes is snowing in town (6 miles away) while it's a clear day at our house.

One thing is for certain: My ears are popping from the change in atmospheric pressure, and that takes some doing!

I just hope the electricity and Internet stays on... that tends to be our primary worries around here. Trees + rain + winds = downed power lines.

Of course, most of my current state of brain fog has nothing to do with the weather, and everything to do with the fact that I "picked up something" at the conference we attended the weekend before last. That's part of the price you pay for being out in public, in a crowded indoor location.

Hopefully it is something relatively light that will leave me within a few days.

People have sometimes asked me to comment on whether I think the whole Covid circus changed things in our world, and I tend to think that the biggest thing that changed is that we spent so much time locked up in isolation and sanitizing ourselves that our natural immunity towards things like common colds and viruses got shot to hell in the process.

When I was a kid, we played around outside, drank from the (undoubtedly) toxic water hose, drank from puddles and ingested all sorts of stuff we totally protect ourselves from, in this day and age. I'm not convinced that's a process that has actually made our lives significantly better.

And that statement has nothing to do with making some kind of "political statement" and everything to do with what simply feels like common sense.

I think a lot of people have also become a lot more histrionic about illnesses. For example, I am not immediately jumping to the conclusion that my stuffy head and runny nose "must be Covid. Sorry folks, the common cold has been with us for a very long time and will continue to be so.

I just want to get over this crap as soon as possible because it is slowing me down!

Having had 68 years of experience with bad cold, flues, and 4 rounds of pneumonia, I must say the first bout of Covid in Jan of 2021 was something VERY different. And I am one of the "fortunate" ones who ended up with long Covid. That took my disabilities to whole new level. I've had brainfog from Lyme disease since I was 20 years old. This brainfog now is much worse. And let's don't talk about the exhaustion and general overall aching.

So I am hoping you have just a cold...

My own chronic illness has been flaring up with flu-like aches and pains as the cold, moist front has been moving through the Washington/Idaho border region. Sounds like even more fun is on the way. I hope your power stays on!
