Things to look for in a CRT for retro gaming
I ran across this How-To-Geek article this morning:
https://www.howtogeek.com/ill-only-buy-a-crt-for-retro-gaming-if-it-has-these-features/
The author makes some really interesting points in it. I was most surprised by the last point, that he looks for TVs that support both NTSC and PAL. I didn't even know that was a thing!
There is one thing I disagree on, however. His insistence on RGB is laudable, but not nearly as necessary to the general retro gamer in my opinion. Most 16 bit consoles and when the 32 bit consoles won't really be able to take full advantage of it. Component video didn't really take off until the PS2/GameCube era. Now, that said, component output for the PS2 is a game changer. I have a component cable for my PS2 and I do use it on non-CRT TVs. You do get a much higher picture quality or of it. However, the PS2 caps out at 480i resolution, less than half of the 1080p resolution of most HDTVs and interlaced at that!
But overall, I like this post. It's quite informative!
