It's summer, it's hot, it's humid, it's not so fun outside. Thinking of this, the other day I found myself randomly humming the first song here. Is it because my mind was in the mood for it or simply because I was trying to think of a catchy song that mentioned winter? I don't know. But I'm returning to it this morning for my music post and using it to build a theme.
The Bangles - Hazy Shade of Winter
The Bangle's version of this Simon & Garfunkel hit #2 on the charts, surpassing the popularity of the original. It has a hard rock feel and removes bits and pieces of the original, but overall it's a fantastic version. I always enjoyed the images of the song. And now as something of a hopeless poet myself, I enjoy the story of the song as well. I like the energy the Bangles give the song, taking what could be considered a slightly depressing song and making it more an uplifting reflection of life.
The Jacksonians - California Dreaming
Another song originally from the 60s, a slight reflection on life, evoking themes of change and longing. The original is nice, but how about this cover? I bet you haven't heard it before. It gives a unique spin on the song that I dig, giving it a heavy soul feel, making it almost completely different from the original.
Tori Amos - Winter
I seem to have a bit of a theme going here, so to continue it let's end on Tori Amos's big hit. I'm sure you all know this one. It may be her biggest hit and has been praised by many in the industry. Wrestler Mick Foley is on record saying the song changed his life—high praise from Mankind. Read it here. If you've never heard it, enjoy!
So what's your favorite?

The Bangles get my vote, but then again they bring back some memories too. Although Calfornia Dreamin was kinda cool as well.
Hazy Shade of Winter is one of my favorites. I never dove very deep into Tori, but I know some of her songs. You are also right, I never heard that cover of California Dreaming before :)
Great choices! The Bangles really made the song their own, and added so much to the old version. The guitar was great, and so much more energy. They did an amazing job!
The Jacksonians I hadn't heard of before, but you're right about adding soul to the old Beach Boy song. Kind of a cool take on it!
Tori Amos did a great job on the last one. She has a perfect voice for it. I hadn't heard this song in probably ten years, it was great to hear it again.
Great TTT!
