It's My Birthday・Some Thoughts & A Birthday Giveaway

avatar

Today I turn 45! Sometime today anyway.... I think my actually birthday was sometime at night in the eastern timezone, which I suppose would make my real birthday tomorrow morning Japan time. Hmm. I'm sure the exact time is important for people like @opidia to make up astrological charts, but for the rest of us the day is the day, eh? And for me, that's today! The big 45!

Five years ago on the occasion of my 40th birthday I wrote this post. I thought today I'd do a sequel.

Oh... birthday photo? Well that age 40 post featured me and my youngest and in the caption I wrote that I'd get his brother next time... well, it's next time, so let's do one with my oldest for this year.

Getting Older

Looks mostly the same, eh? You can see my facial hair is now a bit more grey, and my face fatter but otherwise I think these past five years have treated me fairly well. Right? ...right???

In that post I wrote that I was only barely aware of the fact that I was 40. That was true. Most of my 20s and 30s just kind of all blurred together. From year to year I was never really aware of my age unless someone asked me and I had to do the math, because it just didn't matter to me.

Well, it still doesn't matter to me, but back then people didn't remind me of it quite as often as they do now, so I didn't have that constant awareness of how old I was. That mostly changed after turning 40. From there on, I was reminded of my age much more often. Whether from the doctor telling me I now needed this and this checked because I passed some age milestone, or from my wife warning me to be careful when I do something because I don't want to hurt myself, or from my kids who take joy in constantly pointing out how "old" I am.

Other than the number, I feel no different from five years ago. Nor any different from when I was a kid, to be honest. I have some more pains that I don't remember having when I was a kid, but pains aren't really the kinds of things we remember, are they? Inside our head we are ageless, and I feel the same as I always have. I know it's this way for everyone. I've talked to old men in their 80s and 90s who say much the same. Isn't it funny... everything changes—the buildings of our town, the technology we all use, the latest fads—everything except us, but then we look in the mirror and realize our outer shell has also changed. As Heraclitus said:

You cannot step into the same river twice, for other waters are continually flowing on.

I could launch into some Zen philosophy here about the self, the ego, rebirth, that kind of thing. But in the interest of keeping this post somewhat short and light today, I'll spare you all. Anyway, here's to the next five years! Hopefully all of us will still be here and Hive will have mooned so we'll all be rich! Now there's a birthday wish!!

A Birthday Celebrated

We should celebrate. One of my favorite books is The Lord of the Rings. I've written about my love of this book (and the others in the series) on Hive and the pre-Hive network which must not be named several times. At the very beginning of LotR we celebrate Bilbo's eleventy-first birthday and we learn that hobbits don't receive presents on their birthdays, they give them. I like that.

In the spirit of that birthday tradition, I am going to do a little giveaway here. I'm 45 so I'm going to be giving away 45 shares of HSBI (Hive Stake-Based Income). I've traded some HBD and I think I have enough Hive to cover this giveaway, so let's go!

How will this work? Just give me a comment to say you are here to take part in my birthday celebration! But I'm going to add a step to that. To tell me you've actually read this post and are not just jumping on the giveaway bandwagon, if you want to be in on the giveaway, answer me this question: What is your favorite birthday memory and why was it so excellent as to stick in your memory? Also, for kicks, Lord of the Rings—which do you prefer: movie or book? Answer me those questions and be one of the first 45 people to reply to this post and you will get 1 share of HSBI sent to you within a few days. If this post doesn't get 45 comments—and let's face it, it probably won't—then I will reward the leftover units of HSBI to the best comment. It may take me a few days to compile a list, get all the HSBI sent out, and post proof, but I'll try to get around to that within a week.

Now, I'm going to go attempt to do as finish my work as quickly as possible so I can enjoy time with my kids. They are still young enough to want to be with dad so I'm sure they have some kind of event planned, so I need to be ready for them.

Happy Birthday.

I love the LOTR movies but the books have my heart. The hobbit was the first fantasy book i ready other than the redwall series and it captured my attention. I need to ready all those book again sometime.

A Birthday memory of mine was when I got some of my grandpas silver. Still love that.

Thank you 😃

I read the hobbit and LotR to my kids every year. Don't know if we'll get around to the Silmarillion. That might be more for them to tackle on their own when they get older.

Wow, that would be a great birthday gift!!

Well first off… HAPPY BIRTHDAY! 45 looks good on you. Glad we could be here on hive to take part in your birthday celebration. 😄 Seriously though, while you have been around for ages it is nice to have finally crossed paths.

As for LOTR…. You forgot to include the cartoon in your comparison of favorites!

🤣😂 Oh wait! That is the Hobbit though, which I guess is different. I saw the movies before I read the books, so will go with the movies. Which are AMAZING. I still tear up when they light those signal cauldrons on the mountain tops… 🥲

Best birthday…. When I turned 24 swing dancing was having this weird late 1990’s revival. So we all went to a club in downtown Seattle to swing dance. I was a regular so knew a ton of people out that night. Some girl (that I knew peripherally) decided I should get 24 kisses from 24 guys for my 24th b-day. So that happened. 😇 Then my last kiss of the night (number 25, the one to grow on) was this super chaste gentle kiss on the lips from a guy I had a HUGE crush on. 😍

It was a good night. 😄

Enjoy your multi time zone prolonged celebration! 🎂

Happy Birthday! (Selamat Ulang Tahun! <--- That's how you say it in Indonesian... I don't know how to say it in Japanese yet and when my mind went searching for it, it came back with Indo! Haha)

I'm sure the exact time is important for people like @opidia to make up astrological charts

Ha! This is funny. The very first thing I thought about doing when I saw your post said it was your birthday was to look up a version of your birth chart. Ha! Professional habit. I can't quite help myself as I love knowing more about people. (For the record, I looked up your Human Design chart based on "Eastern Time tonight". It's similar to astrology but... different. *If you do happen to know what the exact time was and you want a strange birthday present, let me know: I'll be happy to tell you what your birth chart tells you about you :P)

In other news, LotR: LOVED the movies. I tried reading my Dad's very old, awesome books (after completing The Hobbit) when I was a young adult and I just found them too dense. In hindsight, I wish I had tried again before the movies came out because J.R.R. Tolkien really was such a genius. But alas, now that I've seen the (brilliant) movies I can't quite get myself to read the books. I think because I don't actually love reading (I much prefer listening) it just feels too much like hard work. My loss, I'm sure.

Anyhoo, I do hope you get 45 comments on this post (over and above mine, since you already sent me HSBI just the other day!). But either way, a very big happy birthday to you, Mister. I am glad you are well.

Just for you, I asked my mom what time I was born when they called to wish happy birthday. She said it was at 7:40. Now in those days Indiana didn't follow daylight savings time, so we would in effect change time zones twice a year as everyone else went on or off. So that means it would have been the central time zone. So July 6, 1978 7:40 pm, central time zone. So... lay it on me. Do I have a good fortune?

I think the language in the books is tough for kids. The words and sentence syntax are too old fashioned. I think for kids it is better to have it read to them. That's why I read it to my kids every year. If you want to get into the books but don't like reading, why not try the audio books? They are really well performed.

Thank you for the well wishes 😃

(Just realised I wrote your name incorrectly on here! But it doesn't affect the outcome of your chart--because you could have been called anything when you were born, it doesn't actually affect your nature only your nurtured perspective of yourself).

So, first and foremost, Human Design isn't really used as a fortune-telling tool but rather as a tool to better understand (love, accept and appreciate!) ourselves.

What I can tell about you through the lens of this system is (in brief... but I could write a whole book about each person's chart I see):

  • You are here to do work you love. If you love your work (or what you pour your life force energy into) you could do it most days for the whole rest of your life.

  • If you love your work you'll never want to "retire" per se but rather just naturally slow down a little bit as you age and keep doing and building and making stuff until you do.

  • You're highly individual (examples I already know about you: you're on Hive, you're American but live in a culture completely different from the culture you were born into, etc) and are really here to do new things and different things than the crowd.

  • You're highly structured, organised and routine-like in your life. (I see that in the consistency with which you write posts here!). While you're designed to make quick, gut decisions on things, the idea of "Going with the flow" isn't really you. You like to make a plan and then execute it.

  • You're strong-willed and if you say you're going to do something then you'll go through hell and high water to make sure you stick to that commitment. Over time, you've probably become wiser about what you will and won't say 'yes' to and you know that you hate letting people down.

There's so, so much more in here but let's end with these three:

  • You're an excellent teacher.
  • You naturally want to solve problems (and probably hate it when you can't solve a problem or someone wants to just talk about their problem and not let you help them solve it!) and
  • You are getting wiser and wiser with age. In fact, sometime around your 50th birthday you're likely to step into one or more leadership roles that allow you to really make the most of the huge number of experiences you've had in your life such that you get to be a powerful role model for others to learn from.

Oh, one more thing that's awesome... Your chart is a LOT like my partner, @new.things' chart!

Oh, and the part of you that paid attention to the detail regarding your time of birth... I put Indianapolis in as your birth location (since it only needs the timezone and not specific lat and long & I checked Indianapolis' time in 1978 against the time in 2018 with UTC time and there was an hour difference. Which means (as I understand it) the software I use to create charts had already adjusted for daylight savings changes; something I thought they had done (more fastidiously than most HD chart software companies but thought I would check since you brought it up!).

Wow, very cool. Thank you for all the info! I will have to take some time to process all that, but it's very interesting. Is this Human Design system popular?

Everything you write does seem pretty well on the mark. The only thing you mention that I don't know about is the highly structured thing. I do aim to be structured, but I also often go off the rails and end up winging things far more than I would like. Some undiagnosed ADD perhaps. I'm getting better about that. Kids definitely didn't help, but using a bullet journal does.

You know, I actually don't know why I recalled that fact about my birth time. I usually don't consider that but it came to mind this time. It's funny that I grew up in a place that didn't follow DST then moved to a place that also doesn't follow DST, and very shortly after I left Indiana they changed the law and started following DST. Very odd timing on that.

Happy Birthday. My favourite and happiest birthday memory also happens to be that of my wedding day. Yup. So I'll never forget that as the 2 are forever intricately linked. I prefer the LOTR movie btw. Saves me the trouble of reading the book.

My most memorable birthday was actually when I was just 6 years old. I recall sitting in the doorway waiting for my parents to come home as usual. Then in the distance, I saw my dad carrying a small BMX bike over his shoulders. Somehow that memory just stuck vividly in my head. Good times. 😌

I like both the Lord of the Rings movies and books, but I'd go for the books, considering those were what I first read long before the movies were ever a thing.

Happy Birthday! Mine was about a month or so ago and I have to admit that I wish I was turning 45 again. 47 feels like it is decades away from 45 versus just a couple of years. Time just seems to start passing faster and faster the older you get. It is scary.

I know what you mean. Time just goes faster and faster and faster. My dad who is in his 70s talks about how the seasons are like days to him now. On one hand that seems like a crazy statement to me, but on the other hand... I can imagine it. Hell, it almost seems like that fast now sometimes!

It does and it scares the crap out of me. I've still got so much I want to do and accomplish! That's honestly a really powerful statement that your dad made. It will be floating around in my head for a good while I think.

Happy birthday! I hope you didn’t get hurt doing whatever it was your kids had planned.😉

I definitely feel older now in my body since passing 40. Running and playing tag with my kids and their friends, and trying to keep up on the soccer field just isn’t the same as it was three or four years ago.

But maybe that’s because during Corona I fell out of a regular exercise routine.

I’ll take the books over the movies any day. I wasn’t a fan of the movies, but I think that’s the type of thing where you fall in love with whichever it is you encountered first. In that case, though I haven’t seen them in years, I might pick the animated version that I remember seeing some time in the 80s.

I hear you. I think it was the same for me... I fell out of shape during Corona. I'm slowly getting back into it and still trying to shed the extra weight I gained.

You echo my feelings. I honestly didn't really care for the movies. I never say that too loud because they are very beloved by many people, but besides the absolutely perfect casting of Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Ian Holm as Bilbo, I just didn't like them all that much. The books all the way for me. heh but yeah, I have some good memories of the animated version. I haven't watched those since I was a kid.

Happy birthday! 45 years, that's a lot! I'm only 44 and a few months.... Hope you're having a great time.
I don't like very pompous things, or material objects, so I'm stuck with the breakfast my daughters and son made for my birthday this year. Come to think of it, it's also possible that I have a bad long term memory, because I have almost no memories of my childhood birthdays. I suppose they must have been happy ones, but I don't remember anything in particular.
Regarding The Lord of the Rings, I'll stick with the book, because I didn't even see the movie. I generally avoid watching movies whose book I've already read, and I also don't like watching movies if they're based on a book I'm interested in reading. And, to top it off, I find it harder and harder to watch movies. I find them too long for my pace of life. I'd like to change that, but anyway, that's all there is at the moment.
I'm looking forward to writing in Blockchain Poets again, but unfortunately there are times when I have to work two jobs to survive in my country and I don't have time left for poetry. It sucks, I know.
Greetings!

Thank you 😃 Ah, so I've been you by a few months. You'll get here soon!

You're not missing much by not watching the movies. In my opinion, the books are so much better.

Wow, you have two jobs? Whew... good luck, man. I hope you can get some relief. But whenever you get some time for poetry, we will be here waiting for you 😃

Consciouscat in another comment asked, so when I was talking to my mom I asked the exact time I was born. She said 7:40. So that would be July 6 1978 7:40 pm central time (in those days Indiana didn't follow DST, so in effect we switched time zones twice a year as everyone around us went on or off DST)

Glad you were too scared of my face. haha 😅

That's a great birthday memory! I haven't been to a concert in some time. When my kids get older I'd love to go with them to one.
