If The Gravestone Could Speak #11
“Today we will be starting a project, he said, bouncing on the spot with more excitement that all of his students combined, “it will be based on the Milky Way. Can everyone please find themselves a partner”.
Alex looked straight past Aurora at Peter, but his friend only wagged a finger at him and pointed at the girl between them. She was looking at Alex with big, luscious eyes, twirling a blond braid through her fingers.
“Do you want to be partners?” she asked before he could try and find someone else.
“Er, yeah sure,” he replied nervously, knowing he could not refuse even if he wanted to.
Peter had already found someone else to work with, a brunette girl with baggy jeans and an overlarge jumper. Left with little choice but to work with the girl beside him, Alex swallowed hard and decided that he would not let the nerves get the better of him this time. He wanted to work with Aurora; he’d wanted to work with her in history class as well. There was something about her that drew him in, if only he could stop doubting himself.
To his surprise, the more she talked to him, the less awkward he started to feel. This was turning into the most fun Alex had ever had during a physics lesson, and together, they laughed and joked until another bell rung through the school to signal the end of second lesson. They’d been so engrossed in their Milky Way project, Alex giggling at something Aurora had said, that when the looked up, only Peter was left in the room.
“I’m glad you’ve finally found your voice at last,” he said, grinning as Alex turned shy once again, “but we really must get a move on”.
“Aurora’s coming as well,” blurted Alex, “I’ve invited her to spend lunch with us”.
Throughout the rest of that first day at school, the three of them were inseparable. Aurora had chosen to study many of the same subjects as Alex and Peter, so was often seen sat with them during lessons. When the final bell rang to signal the end of the day, it was like they’d been a group of three for as long as they could remember. Laughing and joking as they walked down the corridor, Alex prepared to say goodbye to her, already eager to start the next school day so he could see her again.
“Goodbye Auror…” he started before being pulled in by the girl for a hug.
“I’ll see you tomorrow,” she said as Alex’s legs returned to jelly.
Peter also received a hug, but it was not with the same warm embrace that Alex had enjoyed. For a long time, they just stood there, Alex gawping at Aurora as she left and Peter sniggering to himself as he realised how besotted his friend was. This time stood staring would prove costly though as no sooner had Aurora walked out of the front door, Jessica came swooping up behind them, a group of cheerleaders and football players behind her.
“Hello Peter,” she spat menacingly, eyeing her brother like a lion and its prey, “you ready to take a visit inside your locker?”.
