Fear of Failure

Have you ever been scared of something to a degree that not trying at all became your best option? I've been there. It's like having a little voice in my head saying, What if you screw this up? This fear may be so firm as to stop us from reaching out for our dreams.

I remember wanting to take up a new hobby, painting. Then, the thoughts came, "What if my paintings are really bad?" Another thought was "If the painting is bad, I'm not only wasting my time but my money in those paint brushes and paints" So, I never even took up the brush in the first place. This kind of thinking kept me from pondering if I could enjoy or even be good at painting.

It's obvious many of us do so. We are so scared of failure that we never make a chance to succeed. It's a self created cage. The key lies in changing the way we look at our failures.

Instead of thinking about failure as the end, we can think of it as success's step. That way when you fail you know it's just part of the process and it doesn't mean quit. Take for instance, when children are learning how to walk. They fall several times but always get up to try again. After each fall, it is a lesson learned.

Things changed for me when I began to view failure this way. I was actually able to do new things.

I finally got the first time in my life cooked a hard recipe and I remember saying I'm a bit of of shy person in previous blogs right? Well I was now able to speek in public. If course there were times I messed up, but each time, it gave me a new lesson. I didn't let any disappointment stop me from trying another one. I actually believe that's the real common secret successful people share, they see failure this way.

Fear of failure is quite natural in my opinion. It's a basic instinct in US and sometimes it's there to prevent us for making risky moves that can put us in danger or disappointment. However, it need not stop us from trying what is necessary and what is good. We take small steps, set little goals, and celebrate every bit of progress. In this way, we slowly build up the confidence and see that failure is not the enemy but the friend who gets the best out of us.

If you're able to change your mindset and set it in this tone, friends you'll be able to overcome just about anything in life. My only advice is to accept failure but of course don't expect it always.
