Discovering Abilities IV: Magic Reflect

After Cripple, Trample and Double Strike comes the analysis of another skill in the Splinterlands universe. This time it's Magic Reflect. An ability that hardly appears on any card at level 1 and that is really useful at a time when, in the lower leagues, there are a lot of players who put teams full of magic on the board with Obsidian as the star summoner of the moment. To analyse this ability we are going to work with the Earth deck and Failed Summoner as the main protagonist.

Tras Cripple, Trample y Double Strike llega el análisis de otra habilidad en el universo Splinterlands. Esta vez hablamos de Magic Reflect. Una habilidad que apenas aparece en ninguna carta a nivel 1 y que es realmente útil en un momento en el que, en las ligas más bajas, abundan los jugadores que ponen sobre el tablero equipos llenos de magia con Obsidian como invocador estrella del momento. Para analizar esta habilidad vamos a trabajar con el mazo de tierra y con Failed Summoner como protagonista principal.

Failed Summoner. Card from the earth splint common rarity and untamed edition, one of the veteran editions of Splinterlands. It is a very situational card that is almost exclusively used against decks with a predominance of magic attack. Its importance lies in the fact that it is one of only four cards in the set that comes with this ability active at its starting level. In addition to Failed Summoner we have Minotaur Warlord, also an earth splint legendary, Rusty Android, a common neutral, and Prismatic Energy, also a neutral but rare card. Also in the death deck we have Owster Rotwell, a summoner that brings this ability to all cards in play.

Failed Summoner. Carta del earth splint de rareza común y de la edición untamed, una de las ediciones veteranas ya de Splinterlands. Es una carta muy situacional y que es de uso casi exclusivo ante mazos que tengan predominio de ataque mágico. Su importancia radica en que es una de las únicas cuatro cartas del juego que viene con esta habilidad activa en su nivel inicial. Además de Failed Summoner tenemos a Minotaur Warlord, legendaria del mazo de tierra también, Rusty Android, neutral común, y Prismatic Energy también neutral aunque carta rara. Además en el mazo de muerte tenemos a Owster Rotwell, un invocador que aporta esta habilidad a todas las cartas puestas en juego.

For just two points of mana we have Failed Summoner and his two points of speed and four points of life with his Magic Reflect ability. He has no attack, so his use is limited almost exclusively to occupying the first position in the line-up and returning damage from the opponent's first magic attacks before our main tank comes into play.

Por apenas dos puntos de maná tenemos invocado a Failed Summoner y sus dos puntos de velocidad y sus cuatro de vida con su habilidad Magic Reflect. No tiene ataque por lo que su uso se limita, casi exclusivamente, a ocupar la primera posición de la alineación y devolver el daño de los primeros ataques mágicos del rival antes de que entre en juego nuestro tanque principal.

As I said in the introduction to this review, Magic Reflect has a very strong use against decks where we can foresee that the opponent will attack us with several cards with magic attack. With the arrival of Chaos Legion Edition, Magic is very common, especially in earth decks. Obsidian as a summoner boosts this magic and, in addition, the two main healers in this deck Wood Nymph and Goblin Psychic have, in addition to healing, magic attack. So placing Failed Summoner to return some of that magic attack is a good idea.

Como digo en la introducción de este análisis, la habilidad Magic Reflect tiene un uso muy marcado ante mazos en los que podemos preveer que el rival nos atacará con varias cartas con ataque mágico. Con la llegada de la edición Chaos Legion la magia es muy habitual especialmente en los mazos de tierra. Obsidian como invocador potencia esta magia y, además, los dos sanadores principales de este mazo Wood Nymph y Goblin Psychic tienen, además de la sanación, ataque mágico. De ahí que colocar a Failed Summoner para devolver parte de ese ataque mágico es una buena idea.

After analysing the last five battles of @dmsayy, my opponent in this example battle, it was clear that I was going to face Obsidian. My prediction didn't fail and he put on the board up to four cards with magic attack plus a magnificent tank like Unicorn Mustang and Micelic Morphoid completing the line-up in second position. I decided that the best strategy was to place Failed Summoner to damage the opponent's magic a bit, Unicorn Mustang to take advantage of its magic damage reduction and a healer surrounded by two attacking cards on the second line to finish destroying those dangerous cards on the second line. Mylor and his Thorns would take care of his Unicorn Mustang and what was left of Mycelic afterwards.

Tras analizar las últimas cinco batallas de @dmsayy, mi rival en esta batalla de ejemplo, vi claro que me iba a enfrentar a Obsidian. Mi predicción no falló y puso sobre el tablero hasta cuatro cartas con ataque mágico además de un magnífico tanque como Unicorn Mustang y Micelic Morphoid completando la alineación en segunda posición. Decidí, pues, que la mejor estrategia era colocar a Failed Summoner para dañar un poco la magia rival, Unicorn Mustang para aprovechar su reducción de daño mágico y un sanador rodeado de dos cartas con ataque sobre la segunda línea para terminar de destruir esas peligrosas cartas de la segunda línea. Mylor y sus espinas darían cuenta de su Unicorn Mustang y de lo que quedara de Mycelic después.

The nine possible points of magic damage per round that my opponent has put into play could be a rival. I'm hoping that Goblin Thief and Venari Scout's attacks can finish off those four cards quickly enough for Unicorn Mustang to hang on for dear life.

Los nueve posibles puntos de daño mágico por ronda que ha puesto en liza mi rival podrán ser un rival. Confio en que los ataques de Goblin Thief y Venari Scout puedan ir liquidando esas cuatro cartas con la rapidez suficiente para que Unicorn Mustang pueda aguantar con vida.

Finally Failed Summoner managed to do three points of damage before being eliminated. The key to the battle was Goblin and Venari's mopping up of the second line, and especially Wood Nymph's healing, which allowed Unicorn Mustang to be eliminated at the same time as his opponent, and Orc Sargeant to slightly expand the damage he was doing with his Reach ability when it was his turn to take the lead.

Finalmente Failed Summoner consiguió hacer tres puntos de daño antes de ser eliminado. La clave de la batalla fueron la limpieza que hiceron Goblin y Venari sobre la segunda línea rival y, especialmente, la sanación que iba realizando Wood Nymph que permitió que Unicorn Mustang pudiera ser eliminado a la vez que el rival y que Orc Sargeant pudiera ampliar ligeramente el daño que iba realizando con su habilidad Reach y cuando le tocó asumir la primera posición.

Magic Reflect is a key skill in battles where the opponent is likely to focus his strategy on this type of attack. With the current situation it could be really interesting to boost the death deck and Owster Rotwell as a summoner, although it's a strategy that I haven't put into practice yet. What I do use regularly is the earth deck with Mylor, Failed Summoner and Unicorn Mustang as main assets with good results, like the one in the example, against opponents with a predominance of magic attack.

Magic Reflect es una habilidad clave en batallas en las que el rival supongamos que vaya a focalizar su estrategia en este tipo de ataque. Con la situación actual podría ser realmente interesante potenciar el mazo de muerte y a Owster Rotwell como invocador aunque es una estrategia que aún no he llevado a la practica. Lo que si uso de manera habitual es el mazo de tierra con Mylor, Failed Summoner y Unicorn Mustang como activos principales con buenos resultados, como el del ejemplo, ante rivales con predominio del ataque mágico.
