Krampus (2015) was wild!
When it comes to Christmas, I am a big fan. I genuinely find it wholesome and outstanding. So I tend to watch mostly happy joyful comedy Christmas movies during these days.
Scary movies have their time and that's during Halloween 🎃. Usually I am not a fan of scary Christmas 🎄 movies because the two holidays have totally different vibes for me.
Years ago when I saw trailers for 'Krampus' I thought the movie would be super scary and gorey but it really wasn't like that. But it was just scary enough. 'Krampus' did a respectable job at blending genres that typically aren't too easy to blend. 'Krampus' is quite odd in many ways but it also manages to be scary, creepy, wholesome and a bit funny at the same time. Somehow. It's an odd collaboration, but what I like about 'Krampus' is the fact that they really just went for it. The movie doesn't exactly hesitate. Felt pretty confident.
The movie is just so amazingly odd. The scenese were graphic and intense but also as eerie as it gets.
'Krampus' surprised me in other ways too. I like the tasteful tidbits of fantasy elements in the movie. Story telling was fantastical and the lore was actually pretty acceptable. They managed to nail a lot of the roles, in terms of casting. The grandma is awesome. 'Krampus' himself feels like a seriously wicked version of Santa and that was kind of intriguing. He was pretty cool! The CGI/character/costume style was actually really spot on and pretty impressive in 'Krampus'. It vaguely reminded me of 2004's Hellboy and that movie's style.
But yeah, this movie was pretty solid. It was a bit silly at times but even when things seemed silly, it simultaneously would just make things feel eerie because it did feel pretty sinister and dangerous when these toys/creatures would attack. The characters did seem to get hurt and taken for real.
But yeah, an interesting way to instill belief in Santa I'd say LOL. This movie would have scared me substantially more as a youngster.
I also LOVE the snow globe concept. Not too complicated but I did like the nice touch. 'Krampus' keeping track of realms or families or whatever is a wild idea HA.
'Krampus' was not perfect but it was pretty well rounded, entertaining and action packed. Was weaker in different areas I would have expected, but it unexpectedly surpassed my expectations in other aspects.
I'm still a bit wary of 'scary' Christmas movies but 'Krampus' was pretty fun. It felt kinda cool to watch AFTER Christmas for some reason. Maybe this can be a loose tradition, spooky Christmas movies after Christmas LOL. Not sure there's many scary Christmas movies to begin with, I know they exist but I wouldn't guess there'd be a lot. I could be wrong of course.
But yeah I think I will give 'Krampus' an 8.39/10.
