Robbery and lightning
It was 7:00 p.m., Jade and Max had prepared their robbery tools already and were waiting for their boss’s call to proceed with the operation of the night. They waited till 7:30 p.m., and the boss was yet to call, which was unusual, so Jade picked up his phone and dialled the boss’s number. The call went through, and they waited for the boss to pick up, but he didn’t.
"Guy, are you sure everything is alright with the boss? Because this is very unusual of him, he never delayed in giving us the go-ahead in situation like this," Max calmly said while glaring at the time on his small portable phone.
"I'm having the same feeling too, but we just have to wait for him, no matter what." Jade responded, and they left their standing position and went to sit on the sofa.
They were to go for a robbery in one of the big supermarkets in town, they had taken days to map out the supermarket's loopholes, and their boss, the master planner, was to give them the go-ahead for the operation, but it wasn't forthcoming.
While they were on the sofa glued to their phones as a means of whiling away time till their boss’s call comes, Jade’s phone rang. He checked, and it was their boss calling.
"Hello boss, we've been waiting, what's happening?" Jade rushingly asked immediately he picked up the call.
"Sorry, I was still analysing the situation when your calls came. Meanwhile, the operation won't be possible again tonight. The supermarket deployed some soldiers to guard the area, it seems they got information that something fishy was to happen tonight. Since the weather is dark already, just use the opportunity to have a good night rest. My regards to Max." The boss explained and ended the call.
Immediately after the phone call stopped, Jade walked close to the window, opened the curtains, and saw that the weather was actually humid with a strong breeze waving to the tone of pulling off house roofs.
He walked back to where Max was, explained to him what their boss said on the phone, and Max frowned and said, "I've budgeted what I would use the money from this operation to do, noooooo, I can't let tonight pass by."
"So, what are you suggesting?" Jade asked, eagerly expecting what was on Max’s mind.
"I know you would not like it, but I'll say it, let's go and rob the church at the entrance of our street. They just bought a new piano, and it's worth 900 thousand naira."
"Are you out of your mind? You want to go and rob a church? Don’t you have fear?" Jade countered the suggestion quickly.
"You say fear, fear of who, God or the pastor? Robbing a supermarket owned by someone and robbing a church owned by someone—what's the difference? Or don’t you know that the two are business places? The only difference there is the packaging." Max convincingly voiced it out.
"You are correct though, because these pastors are typically into business with the church. But it's raining heavily already. How do we go about it?" Jade finally got convinced to join.
Max walked inside the store room and brought a big black nylon, used a knife to design it into a fitting suit, they wore it, and they set off to the church for the robbery.
They ran through the heavy rain but didn’t feel anything because they were on a mission.
They got there, a small block-walled church with a moderate entrance that has a metal door locked with a big padlock. There was no security personnel, and the fact that it's night and was raining made everywhere silent. Max put his hand on the pocket and brought out a universal key and swiftly unlocked the door. They entered, picked up the new piano and a 65 inches Samsung TV.
"Guy, we can’t pass through this heavy rain with these items, they'll get damaged. What do we do?" Jade asked as they were about to leave.
Max smiled and said, "It's very eas, let's remove the nylon we used as a raincoat to wrap them while we go uncoated."
"Guy, you are too smart." Jade threw accolades at Max, and they both smiled.
They pulled off the nylon, used it to wrap the keyboard and television, and set out to leave.
As soon as they stepped out of the door of the church, standing in the corridor, the downpour that beheld them was magical, and to crown it all, lightnings were manifesting left & right, which got them scared of entering the rain.
They remained there, trying to figure out what to do—either to enter the rain or to look for alternatives.
"Honestly, I'm scared to enter this rain with this nature of lightning. Remember we are with the TV, which is a glass that can attract the lightning's bolt on us." Jade became scared.
"Let's drop back the TV and go alone with the keyboard, after all, this is the initial thing we came for," Max suggested, but Jade refused, saying, "What is worth doing is worth doing well."
They were still dragging when suddenly a lightning bolt struck the ground with sparkling power swept their feet and blew them back inside the church with their heads hitting the wall.
That’s how they became unconscious until the dawn of the day, and an alarm was raised by the people who noticed the incident in the morning. They rushed them to the hospital first, where they miraculously regained consciousness.
After that, they were arrested by the police.
I enjoyed reading your story. Am glad they were caught. If not for Max persistent to go on with another plot of robbery that day they would've caught them.
That's long throat for him.
Look at where it landed them.
Thanks

The thieves defied the odds and were apprehended and incarcerated. A sad, but appropriate end.

I really enjoyed your story and all its construction.
Divine justice! It is rare when punishment comes immediately in real life, but in fiction anything is possible. Good story.
It serves the criminal right. Am happy they were caught, Max was just luck. I really enjoyed your story
