Sacrificing the Minority for the Peace of the Majority! - Bisang seoneon
Giving up the few for the peace of the many, in other words, abandoning a plane full of people to their fate in order to save millions...
It is not always the case, but in some cases it is understandable. Of course, the decisive factor will always be the circumstances and conditions... Or should I say profit and loss? When I used to take exams in my school years and they used to say that 3 wrongs make a right, I used to feel a heavy pressure on me and I would not answer any question that I was not sure about. Unfortunately, I realized in the following years that wrongs make rights in real life too.
Last night I watched the Korean movie Bisang seoneon, which I think is one of the best airplane-themed movies I have ever seen. The reason I think it is one of the best is not because of what happens on the plane, the difficulties of the pilot, the plane making a difficult landing or crashing. In fact, the plane doesn't even crash, it lands safely as it ascends.
The fact that no country would allow the plane to land after the deadly virus suddenly appeared on the plane was the reason why I thought the movie was the best airplane-themed production. While the authorities, fearing the possibility of the virus spreading to their own people, argued that the minority could be sacrificed for the majority, it did not surprise me that there were demonstrators supporting them.
Although the measures taken during the recent covid-19 pandemic are not so radical, they bear similarities. I remember funeral burials in my neighborhood with no one but immediate relatives present. The aim was not to infect more people with the virus and not to take more risks. Just like the advanced scenario considered by those who did not allow the plane to land, and the share of reality in radical decisions taken because of assumptions... of course, the degree of justification can be questioned, but as long as the result does not change, it loses its importance.
At one point, it was difficult to hold back the tears during the scenes where the last messages they left over the phone and internet were given at the moments when they were not even accepted to their own country where they took off. At the moments when the drama was at its peak, I was preoccupied with questions such as what would I think and do if I were one of the passengers on the plane? Or what decision would I take if I were one of those on the ground?
Of course, there are main characters in the movie, but there is no one among them that I think stands out too much. In the plane scenes, almost everyone on the plane was given an equal role and it was a joint production with the participation of hundreds of people. This distinguishes the movie from other genres. Everyone on the plane has their own life story, which is reflected without making it too obvious, but is harmoniously connected to the main story.
Bisang seoneon movie is far from boring despite its duration of over 2 hours. I recommend you to watch the movie. Most Korean movies have versions from previous years or additions to the script. If there is no version from previous years and the script is original, it deserves more praise. The script is great and the movie is a successful production blended with natural acting. I wish everyone who will watch it a good time in advance!
