Revisiting and Adjusting My Hive Goals as Year End Grows Closer!
Although I don't do New Year's resolutions, I do like to set goals for each year. In addition to that, I like to check in with my goals from time to time to see how I'm doing, and to see whether there's any chance I'm actually going to make each goal.
I think there comes a certain point in the year when we have a pretty clear idea of what we're going to be able to accomplish and what we're not. For me, that point is very close at hand... although I also recognize that there are still things I can do to bring up a few things that are lagging a bit behind.
I'm not going to get into specific details about my actual goals here — that's for another post at another time — but I am going to examine the process I tend to use to determine my "Do or Die point" with respect to goals I'd hoped to reach.
Keep it Cohesive!
One of the things that's tempting — particularly if you have multiple goals that you're trying to reach — is to look at your goals in isolation rather than in a holistic fashion. What I mean by that is that you might look at one of your goals that's lagging a bit and say to yourself "well, if I really bust my butt I'll be able to bring that up by the end of the year and still make my target."
The "danger," if you will, is the fact that we're still operating with days that are 24 hours long! And most likely when we say that we're going to bust our butts in order to reach one goal we're going to have to take that time from another goal. So, in order to make this goal does that mean I'm sacrificing my chances of making the other goals?
In recent years, that has been one of my failings that I have become increasingly aware of... which is why I'm more careful about acting on the thought that I can make up lost ground. Or, at least, make up a lot of Lost ground.
For example, today is October 15th so we're sitting here with basically two and a half months to go in 2023. There are a couple of my Hive related goals for 2023 that are currently sitting at just a fraction under 50% of where I am trying to get to. Taking that in isolation I could probably bring one or two of those up to snuff, but the other goals I have that are more or less on target would suffer as a result and most likely I would end up with a cross-section of my goals all coming in about 80-90% or so.
And then I'd get all unhappy because everything fell short.
So this is where you have to make some choices, and perhaps prioritize which projects are most important to you and which ones you're not going to lose sleep over ending up a little bit behind.
Another thing I tend to do is at least "pencil in" my goals for the subsequent year when I'm at about the half-way point in the current year. Doing so allows me to let one or two items deliberately come in a bit below target in service of reaching a couple of goals, with the ultimate intention of making up the Lost ground next year.
That's one of the things I've been looking at this week. It has become quite clear to me that there are at least three or four items on my 2023 goals list that I have virtually no hope of reaching this year.
Well, unless my posts suddenly start earning $50 each! Or the crypto markets have a crazy run-up before the end of the year!
For example, I've come to the realization that there's very little chance that I'll be able to build my HBD savings balance to the point I had hoped for by the end of this year, so I've decided to let that one slide in favor of using my liquid rewards to continue to continue to buy into a couple of other Hive-Engine projects that I have been pursuing this year.
I recognize that by making certain goals this year, I would be OK with somewhat marking down my planned gains for 2024 in those projects, and instead focus on building my HPD balance. In the long run, it would all balance out.
And that is how life often turns out to be, and that includes such things as crypto investing life. Or home improvement. Or gardening projects. Or even work related certifications. We do our best with the available time.
As I wrote in my "Out of time" post a few days ago, we all have to work with these 24-hour days and it becomes important to practice discernment and to prioritize. Oh, and to set realistic goals, to begin with!
Thanks for visiting and having a look at my blog, and till the next one!
