Discovering Bedok: A Leisurely Walk Through Community and Charm
During holidays like this, I take the opportunity to visit other districts and explore the developments happening there. I believe it’s a much better use of my time and energy compared to going to the city to hang out. During holidays, the city tends to be very crowded, and I don’t find walking around in such conditions enjoyable. I prefer visiting places where I can take leisurely walks and learn more about the area I’m exploring. I find this approach to be a more productive way of spending time, especially for a photography walk.
It’s been a long time since I last visited the Bedok area, so I decided to check it out today. Bedok is located on the eastern side of Singapore and is surrounded by other neighborhoods like Kembangan, Simei, and Tampines, which are predominantly residential areas. However, these areas also have their own commercial and community centers. Among them, Bedok stands out as having a uniquely extensive and well-developed community center. I’m truly impressed by how much it has evolved over the years.
I took a bus to Bedok and arrived around noon. It was perfect timing since it wasn’t overly crowded, though there were still plenty of people walking around—some shopping, others heading to lunch spots, and a few simply hanging out. Bedok feels like one of the liveliest residential districts in Singapore, and as I explored the area, I began to understand why.
The first thing I noticed was that, despite having a shopping mall near the MRT station and bus interchange, there are still plenty of small shops and businesses in the area. It’s amazing to see how these small shops manage to sustain themselves. They offer an extensive range of products, which means residents don’t need to venture to other districts to find what they need. It’s no surprise the area remains bustling, even at midday.
After walking for a few minutes, I arrived at the community center, which is the largest I’ve seen so far. It has the most comprehensive amenities, including a recycling area, a free blood pressure check station, a kid’s diorama, a movie screening area, a piano corner, and even a ping pong court.
The most popular amenities here are definitely the community movie screenings and the ping pong court. I initially thought about staying for a while to watch a movie, but it seems there’s no movie showing today due to an upcoming event. Half of the chairs were already occupied by people waiting for the event, but I had no idea what it was about.
Anyway, I moved on to watch an ongoing ping pong match between two older players. They were taking the game very seriously, and it was clear that both were giving it their all.
Ping pong is something I’ve always wanted to try, but I’ve never really found the motivation or time to do so. That said, I really enjoy watching matches like this. It reminded me of a scene from the movie The Karate Kid with Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith, where Dre (Smith’s character) challenged an older man to a ping pong game. Dre thought he could easily win, but little did he know that the older man was an expert. It was a hilarious moment in the film. Honestly, I feel like something similar would happen to me if I tried to challenge either of these players—lol.
I also came across a piano that’s available for anyone brave enough to play or practice. How I wish I knew how to play the piano! This one is set up for public use, and I’m sure anyone who plays it would quickly attract an audience, as the sound carries throughout the entire building. The large hall has excellent acoustics—when I tried pressing a few keys lightly, the notes sounded surprisingly loud.
There’s also a kids’ diorama here, which provides information about nature and animals within the ecosystem. It’s great to see how this community center strikes a good balance between enjoyment and education.
Overall, I think this neighborhood has a lot of positive aspects, and I had a wonderful time exploring it today.
Bedok truly surprised me with its vibrant atmosphere, well-thought-out amenities, and a perfect blend of leisure and learning opportunities. Exploring this district reminded me of the simple joys of slowing down and appreciating what a community has to offer. I’ll definitely be back to uncover more hidden gems and perhaps even try my hand at ping pong or the piano next time!

Very much in agreement, these days is to be in quiet places, I like how the buildings are covered with vegetation, it is a very exotic and pleasant place.

Happy New Year!
What a lovely neighborhood! It looks like a really nice place to live.
Yes, I agree. To be honest, I was kinda jealous and thought of moving here in Bedok 😅
Would that ever be a possibility for you?
Yes, after I complete my contract with the place I'm currently staying in.
Will be considering this place on November 2025 :)
That's exciting!

Happy new year!
A place that I don't really explore. The only thing I know about Bedok is Bedok 85 food centre. Very impressive townhall area, maybe I can spend abit more time when I am in the area and explore a little.
I have never tried that hawker center before, should check it out next time.
And yeah, I think their town hall makes a difference to Bedok. 👍
You must go bro! One of the better places for supper
This mall looks so peaceful. Our town isn't large enough for a multi-level mall, and the only one I've ever been in was the Bullring mall in Birmingham, England. I really like the idea of them having community movie screenings, and that's something I'd like to see them incorporate here. Your area seems like a really inviting part of the world, and a new addition to my bucket list.
Thanks for checking on my post.
Indeed, the movie screenings is a good way to entertain the old folks here because they can also have personal interaction among themselves.
The town hall has a good way of keeping the community entertained while encouraging them to have physical activities as well.
