Minister of Defense (Menhan) Prabowo Subianto revealed the views of developed countries on the importance of national defense. He gave an example, for a country like the United States, 50 percent of its defense budget comes from the state budget. In fact, often the budget can be above 50 percent. "Why? Because they think they don't want to be dictated by other nations," Prabowo said in his presentation.
Not only the United States, Singapore, as one of Indonesia's neighbors, dares to put around 30 percent of the state budget for defense purposes. It doesn't stop there, he said, the 3 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is also focused on the defense budget. "What does that mean? Singapore, an island whose size is 60 thousand hectares, Bogor Regency is bigger than Singapore. The population of Singapore is 5 million people. But he views his independence, his sovereignty, as very, very important," he said.
