Tuvalu, the first digital nation: Digital nation a reality out of necessity
I stumbled on the Tuvalu website and learned that they are at risk of becoming fully submerged soon, due to rising sea water levels.
As a way of preserving their nation, they are taking an effort to build a digital Tuvalu.

What caught my attention is the whole idea of digital nations. This brings to mind how cryptocurrencies and the activities within can construe communities made up of users akin to digital nations. Taskmaster wrote about it recently. I have also written about it in the past.
I don't know what the Tuvalu government has in mind exactly regarding their digital nation. Maybe it will be a metaverse kind of concept. That means it is likely they would have a digital currency.
I find the uncoordinated race between a real country and blockchains to actualize a digital nation amusing, and thought-provoking. It is as if a real country could potentially show us how it is done. To have the citizens of a nation live in different locations around the world and yet bonded by a common digital national identity.
Perhaps we in Hive are already in a digital nation first, just that we have not identified with it.

I did read about it some time ago. They could be the prototype on building a digital nation. The concept still seems futuristic to me but it's gradually becoming a reality.
That's why it caught my attention. It can really become a prototype. We are here seeing a nation potentially accepting that physical location isn't absolutely necessary to keep a nation.

Indeed. The realization opens up new possibilities. It's time to start building a digital nation whether it's a replica of a physical nation or an entirely new one.
Hmmm. digital nations sound quite good, I wonder what it would take to fund one of my own and free myself from my country's corruption.

The tough message from Tuvalu is that the Tuvalu people see the only way to exist for Tuvalu island and its people in a disastrous future is through virtualisation.
The message is sad and bitter and whatever people think about our interferences with the ice caps meltings and the rise of the seas, it doesn't matter, even if not, real efforts towards the preservation of Tuvalu island due to the deregulation of climate need to be done and it's more important than ever.
Imagining the Tuvalu people away from their submerged island, living scattered around the globe, having lost their habitat, ground nation, country, and the island is unthinkable to those generations that will see the land of their ancestors, of their traditions, of their origins, families, parents and elders through a VR mask.
So necessary efforts need to be made. After all, in Holland, they could and their system works although 200 meters under sea level and is still efficient. Our hearts are with the people of Tuvalu and we send them the best for 2023 plus and a long future on the island. Thanks for sharing @cryptothesis!

Is this real / official? And what do they want to "continue to exist as a unity" for when they'll be living around the world? I think they rather than a "nation" would turn into a "community" like we're having communities here on Hive....
Seems official, judging by what is on their website.
On one hand I'd say "wow" on the other hand it's like the news that "El Salvador will adopt BTC as their nacional currency"...

Just reconsidering. They will be close to what we call "Megacities" in Earth2... We're also citizens of such a Megacity (actually most of us we're citizens of many Megacities) and we're living in different parts of the world.
I wouldn't compare it to being a "nation"...

No I am not aware of megacities. Do you want to elaborate?
I'd like to...but where to start?... Earth2.io is a virtual copy of Earth divided by squares of 10x10m more or less (there's some discussion about this since Earth is not flat). These squares are for sale for real money. Since it's a "game" or "metaverse" in development we don't really know which way it's going to be developed and what is going to be more important.... Real locations or locations where the players/buyers want to build? Locations where there are real resources? Which resources?.. etc.
I've been writing an article about Sport City, a (my) district of State 1 Megacity, which I would like to lead and bring back to life here on Hive as well as a community. Unfortunately I'm really lacking on time... :-( Soon I'll write a new post on Earth2 as well, so that you'll be updated :-)
