Hace una semana fui de paseo a Parque del Este, ya que mis amigos Ángeles y Bermy vinieron de visita a Caracas, y aprovechando su estadía quisimos ir de paseo al parque para que Ángeles lo conociera. Antes de arrancar con mi historia, primero un poco de contexto:

El Parque Generalísimo Francisco de Miranda, también conocido como Parque del Este, es un punto de referencia de la ciudad de Caracas debido al gran uso que le han dado los caraqueños y turistas de la ciudad. De acuerdo con el portal de noticias Arquitectura y Empresa :

"Ocupa 82 hectáreas (equivalentes a 0,82 km²) de superficie, es uno de los más importantes de la ciudad de Caracas. El parque del Este fue diseñado por el arquitecto paisajista brasileño Roberto Burle, Marx.

Su inauguración se produjo durante el gobierno de Rómulo Betancourt en 1961, fue llamado parque Rómulo Gallegos, en 1983 cambia a parque Rómulo Betancourt hasta el año 2002 cuando toma el nombre parque Generalísimo Francisco de Miranda en homenaje al precursor de la independencia venezolana."

A week ago I went on a trip to Parque del Este, since my friends Ángeles and Bermy came to Caracas and we wanted to go to the park so that Ángeles could get to know it. Before I start with my story, first a little context:

The Park Generalísimo Francisco de Miranda, also known as Parque del Este, is a landmark of the city of Caracas due to the great use it has been given by Caracas locals and tourists of the city. According to the news portal Arquitectura y Empresa :

"It occupies 82 hectares (equivalent to 0.82 km²) of surface, it is one of the most important in the city of Caracas. Parque del Este was designed by the Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx.

It was inaugurated during the government of Rómulo Betancourt in 1961 and was called Rómulo Gallegos Park. In 1983 it changed its name to Rómulo Betancourt Park until 2002 when it was renamed the park Generalísimo Francisco de Miranda in honor of the precursor of Venezuelan independence."

Actividades para hacer

Los que conocen este parque, saben que en sus extensas áreas se desarrollan una variedad de actividades.

• Tiene un circuito de concreto que consta de 2 kilómetros, en donde hacen vida corredores y ciclistas.
• Cuenta con el Planetario Humbolt donde se realizan proyecciones.
• La Concha Acústica, para conciertos.
• El Zoológico, donde resguardan un gran numero de especies.
• Los patios ornamentales, con variedad de especies de flora y fauna acompañadas de diversas cascadas y asientos.
• Los diversos lagos, como el lago de patos y el lago de barcos, donde las personas pueden dar un paseo en bote.
• Las amplias áreas verdes donde los visitantes se pueden recostar a descansar o hacer ejercicio.

Entre tantas opciones, ese día optamos por explorar el Zoo.

Activities to do

Those who know this park know that a variety of activities take place in its extensive areas.

• It has a concrete circuit that is 2 kilometers long, where runners and cyclists spend their time.
• It has the Humbolt Planetarium where projections are made.
• The Acoustic Shell, for concerts.
• The Zoo, where a large number of species are kept.
• The ornamental patios, with a variety of species of flora and fauna accompanied by various waterfalls and seats.
• The various lakes, such as the duck lake and the boat lake, where people can take a boat ride.
• The ample green areas where visitors can lie down to rest or exercise.

Among so many options, that day we chose to explore the Zoo.

Mi visita al Zoologico

El Zoologico se divide en diversas zonas para cada especie, donde cada una es única.

Primero nos acercamos a la zona de aves, donde vimos, búhos, gucamayas, guacharacas, tucanes, gavilanes, loros, pericos y zamuros. Cuando llegamos a la jaula de los loros, donde habían aproximadamente una docena de ellos, mi amiga Angeles se dirigió a ellos diciendo “a ver tú, que sabes decir? ”.

Esto lo dijo como un chiste, pero para nuestra sorpresa el loro que se encontraba más pegado a la rendija le respondió “Hola!”, como queriendo demostrarle que ¡si sabía decir algo! Nos dio mucha risa el evento, pero lo malo fue que cuando le intentamos mostrar a Bermy que el loro hablaba, el pobre loro no habló más y nos dejó pareciendo unas locas 🤣.

My visit to the Zoo

The Zoo is divided into different zones for each species, where each one is unique.

First we approached the bird area, where we saw owls, gucamayas, guacharacas, toucans, sparrow hawks, parrots, parakeets and vultures. When we arrived at the parrot cage, where there were about a dozen parrots, my friend Angeles addressed them saying "let's see, what do you know how to say?

She said this as a joke, but to our surprise the parrot that was closest to the crack answered "Hello!", as if to show her that he knew how to say something! We laughed a lot, but the bad thing was that when we tried to show Bermy that the parrot could talk, the parrot didn't talk anymore and left us looking like crazy 🤣.

Luego de ver las aves nos dirigimos a la zona de los caimanes, babas y tortugas. Allí pudimos ver a un caimán flotar en el agua, y a otro que estaba tan estático que dudamos si estaba vivo. Al cabo de 10 minutos vimos que movió un poco una de sus patas y logramos confirmar que en efecto, estaba vivo, pero les juro que fue todo un debate la situación.

After seeing the birds we headed to the alligators, babas and turtles. There we could see a alligator floating in the water, and another one that was so static that we doubted if it was alive. After 10 minutes we saw it move one of its legs a little and we were able to confirm that it was indeed alive, but I swear it was quite a debate.

La parte mas entretenida para mi fue ver a la nutria, verla nadar te deja atrapado porque es un animal que luce demasiado tierno.

Lo que no me gustó fue ver a una familia alimentar a la nutria lanzando Platanitos al estanque, y que no hubiese ningún tipo de control al respecto por parte de los cuidadores del Zoológico. Para los que no saben que son los Platanitos, es básicamente comida chatarra procesada, algo que obviamente no esta hecho para ser ingerido por animales. No se si en el parque cuentan con una gaceta donde vendan alimento para animales, pero opino que eso seria lo mas optimo que se podría tener en un lugar así, para que las personas interactúen un poco con los animales mas inofensivos como la nutria.

The most entertaining part for me was to see the otter, watching it swim leaves you trapped because it is an animal that looks so cute.

What I didn't like was to see a family feeding the otter by throwing Platanitos into the pond, and that there was no control whatsoever by the zookeepers. For those who don't know what Platanitos are, it is basically processed junk food, something that is obviously not meant to be ingested by animals. I don't know if the park has a stand where they sell food for animals, but I think that would be the best thing to have in a place like this, so that people can interact a little with the most inoffensive animals like the otter.

Por ultimo, vimos al jaguar, este estaba en su jaula y le escuchamos agonizar repetidas veces. No se el motivo del dolor que padece, pero mientras tomaba fotos llegué a escuchar a uno de los cuidadores decir que “trasladarla seria muy peligroso, porque ya esta muy vieja, entonces es mejor dejarla quieta acá”. Sinceramente, me dio mucha tristeza saber que aunque saben que algo le duele, igual le dejan allí sufriendo.

Finally, we saw the jaguar, it was in its cage and we heard it agonizing repeatedly. I don't know the reason for the pain she is in, but while I was taking pictures I heard one of the keepers say that "moving her would be very dangerous, because she is already very old, so it is better to leave her here". Honestly, it made me very sad to know that even though they know that something hurts her, they still leave her there suffering.

Antes de irnos caminamos un poco por la parte del lago y los botes, nos queríamos montar pero ya se nos estaba haciendo tarde, así que solo nos tomamos unas fotos frente a la Corbeta Leander, que es este gran barco que se encuentra en el parque, y luego caminamos a la salida.

Before we left we walked a little bit around the lake side and the boats, we wanted to ride but it was getting late, so we just took a few pictures in front of the Corvette Leander, which is this big ship that is in the park, and then walked to the exit.

Tenía a aproximadamente 4 años sin visitar este parque así que mis memorias del Zoológico eran muy pocas, no recuerdo si hace unos años se encontraba en peor o mejor estado, pero a mi me dio un poco de tristeza ver el estado en el que se encontraban las jaulas y aguas del lugar, se nota el descuido y la falta de mantenimiento.

Pero a diferencia de mi, mis amigos opinaron que el zoológico se encontraba en buen estado, que esperaban algo mucho peor ya que en Pto Ordaz (la ciudad donde los tres crecimos) tenía un Zoo el cual terminó cerrando debido al estado deplorable en el que se encontraba, donde ocurrieron hasta robos de animales para ser usados luego en rituales, todo muy shady lo sé, así que comparado con eso, sin dudas gana el Zoo de Parque del Este.

I had approximately 4 years without visiting this park so my memories of the Zoo were very few, I do not remember if a few years ago it was in worse or better condition, but I was a little sad to see the state in which the cages and waters of the place were, you can see the neglect and lack of maintenance.

But in contrast to me, my friends said that the zoo was in good condition, that they expected something much worse since in Pto Ordaz (the city where the three of us grew up) had a Zoo which ended up closing due to the deplorable state it was in, where even animals were stolen to be used later in rituals, all very shady I know, so compared to that, without a doubt the Parque del Este Zoo wins.

Durante el rato que estuve en el Zoológico se me paso por la cabeza la siguiente pregunta:

¿Hive puede rescatar espacios físicos que están descuidados y necesitan mantenimiento?

Me encantaría que a través de Hive se lograra recuperar espacios como este Zoo, pero a la vez, por ser un recinto que esta bajo el cuidado del gobierno venezolano, imagino que debe ser complicado dar rienda a un proyecto como ese. Aun así, me pregunto si habrá forma de que Hive pueda rescatar espacios en mi país, y de que manera afecta que los espacios sean públicos o privados para que Hive pueda contribuir en los procesos de mantenimiento y desarrollo.

During my time at the Zoo, the following question crossed my mind:

Can Hive rescue physical spaces that are neglected and need maintenance?

I would love that through Hive it would be possible to recover spaces like this Zoo, but at the same time, being an institution that is under the care of the Venezuelan government, I imagine that it must be complicated to give rein to a project like that. Even so, I wonder if there is a way for Hive to rescue spaces in my country, and how it affects whether the spaces are public or private so that Hive can contribute to the maintenance and development processes.
