The legendary Christ of Havana [El legendario Cristo de La Habana]
The Christ of Havana is one of the most popular places in the capital of Cuba. This colossal statue has a height of 51 meters above sea level (twenty meters from the image, three meters from the base and 28 meters from the hill). The statue was made with around 600 tons of white marble. The sculpture is located at the entrance to the port of Havana, on the left, between the fortress of San Carlos de la Cabaña and the town of Casablanca. But what led to the construction of this statue? After the assault on the Presidential Palace on March 13, 1957 to execute the dictator Fulgencio Batista, his wife promised that if he was saved she would have an image of Christ erected. A contest was held which the Cuban sculptor Jilma Madera won. The construction of the sculpture took place in Italy supervised by Jilma and after it received the Pope's blessing it was moved to Havana for assembly. It was inaugurated with the presence of the dictator Fulgencio Batista on December 25, 1958.
