The value of HBD in Caracas, VE - Leo Challenge
Hello Hivers, Lions, and Lionesses!
This is my participation in the challenge of the value of HBD in your hometown, launched a few days ago by @leogrowth. And in which you can participate until May 15, 23:59 PST. If you want to read the details, you can check them here.
That said, from the title, you already know that I live in Venezuela. So before I get into the subject with HBD, I will give you a little background on the Venezuelan economy.
Some Background - Venezuela's inflationary process in the last years
Venezuela lived under hyperinflation from the end of 2017 until the beginning of 2022. It was the result of bad economic policies, of which a book could be written, but I will limit myself to say that for many years previous to that, we had an exchange control and a price control policy that devastated the economy. It caused a shortage of basic products and plunged the country into a war economy without going through a real war. This led the country to one of the longest hyperinflations in history. Of which, according to official figures, we have emerged at the beginning of 2022. However, according to the International Monetary Fund, we are still the country with the highest inflation in the world.
Venezuela was under hyperinflation since the end of 2017. According to figures that the government recognizes (so they might be even worst), the annual inflations were around: in 2021 - 687%, in 2020 - 3.000%, in 2019 - 9.000%, and in 2018 (the worst) - 130.000%.
All this with a constant devaluation of the Bolivar against the dollar. And a shortage of cash. After several years, we are beginning to see bolivar notes on the street again. And we have had three currency reconversions in less than 15 years. In which the currency has lost 14 zeros. The last one was in October 2021.
At the moment, there is a kind of de facto dollarisation of the economy. The dollar is used as the reference currency for prices. And transactions are mostly carried out in dollars, even though their use is not official.
And I could go on, but I think I have already given you an overview of the situation.
With all this panorama, it is not surprising that Venezuela has been a fertile ground for the adoption of cryptocurrencies in recent years. Having access in this country to a means of monetary value other than the bolivar has become a way of surviving the crisis. But if that currency is also a stablecoin with parity almost equal to the dollar, the interest in having it is even greater.
But what can I buy with HBD in Caracas?
At the time of writing this:
1 HBD = 0,97 USD = 4,50 Bs
Many of the prices here, as I mentioned before, are referenced in USD.
- Fuel
If anything remains cheap in Venezuela compared to the rest of the world, it is petrol. 1 liter costs 0.50 US$ of freely sold petrol. But in Venezuela, there is also subsidized petrol that the government sells through a system of quota allocation that has a lot of social control, but that is another matter, and it costs Bs 0.11 per liter. So
1 Liter of free sale petrol = 0,485 HBD
1 Liter of subsidized petrol = 0,024 HBD
So with 10 HBD, I can put 20,62 liters of petrol in my 40-liter car. Half a tank that can last me a week if I drive only in the areas nearby and if I don't have to go to the city center. And if I am willing to make the queues for the subsidized petrol, with 10 HBD, I could put 416,67 liters. This is enough to fill the tank of my car ten times, which is the petrol I would need for three months.
- Food
Food in Venezuela is expensive. Prices vary a lot from place to place. In the popular markets, which have proliferated a lot, you can buy some items such as cheese and vegetables a little cheaper than in supermarkets.
The prices I show below are from a supermarket near my home, which is in the expensive range. I only go there when I am short of something at home, and I only have to buy a few things. But to give you an idea.
1 kilo of tomatoes = 3,04 USD = 2,95 HBD
1 kilo of mangoes = 0,96 USD = 0,93 HBD
1 kilo of pineapple = 2,04 USD = 1,98 HBD
1 kilo of green apples = 5,54 USD = 5,37 HBD
1 kilo of lemons = 2,91 USD = 2,82 HBD
On the day I took the pictures last week, already thinking about this post, I bought a few things I needed at home.
I spent 93,94 Bs equivalent to 20,87 HBD. And I bought 1 liter of corn oil, 1 mayonnaise, about half a kilo of chicken fillets, tomatoes, garlic, 1 can of tuna, and 1 kilo of washing detergent. Pretty expensive, isn't it?
There are three of us at home, and the average weekly expenditure on food and toiletries is around 100 HBD per week, maybe a little more. If I do buy fish and seafood, which are quite expensive and have gone up in price a lot. For example, a little over a year ago, the fish supplier I usually go to, had a kilo of shrimp for about 12-14 HBD. Today it costs 20 HBD. It is not something I buy often, but it is an example of how prices have skyrocketed in the last year. Not only in Bs, but in dollar reference as well.
- Eating Out
This can be as expensive as you want it to be. In a mid-range restaurant, the cost per person can range from 15 to 30 HBD. Eating a hot dog on the street costs 2 HBD. A hamburger and fries in a sit-down restaurant cost between 6 and 10 HBD. A big mac combo at Mcdonald's costs around 8 HBD.
A coffee (latte or cappuccino) in a coffee shop or bakery can cost 1,5 to 2,5 HBD. And in some places even more expensive than that.
- Services
Most services in Venezuela are a disaster, and some would say that you pay for what you get since some are cheap. For example, our monthly electricity bill is less than 5 HBD. But service failures are constant. It would be great to pay a little more and have good service, but that is far from happening.
Conclusion and final thoughts
Venezuela has emerged from hyperinflation, but the economy is far from being on the road to recovery.
The false sense of improvement that a sector of the population has is only based on the increase in consumption and the supply of goods to be consumed. But the production of goods in the country is scarce, and the foreign capital that has left after years of bad and restrictive policies has not returned and will not return until there is legal security.
The bolivar continues to devalue daily. The country's infrastructure and public services are in terrible condition. And having access to a hard currency and other payment alternatives remains a priority for the population.
In this scenario, cryptocurrencies, and this case, HBD, has a value that goes beyond the purchasing power. Being able to save in HBD is a great opportunity, and it is even more so if we can have a good return by placing them in the pHBD pool or keeping them in savings at 20% APR.
This is all for now. Thank you for reading!

What a great post @coquicoin 😁
Such a thought went into it. It sure helps us understand the situation in your home country more. On many levels.
It truly is a mess but it is starting to climb out of the hyperinflation. Bit by bit.
Thanks for sharing your HBD value too 😊

Thank you, Jackie!
Understanding what has happened in Venezuela is a big challenge in itself. For those of us who live here and deal with the situation every day, it is difficult to understand it. Imagine someone who looks at what is happening from the outside.
I think that what has happened has made us have to constantly reinvent ourselves, and we have become more resilient in many ways. But in the end, it is because of all this that there are so many Venezuelans on Hive and any other online opportunity for generating income.
Happy Friday to you!😊

You are welcome @coquicoin 😊
Yes, it must be a challenge to understand, seen from where you are. Most people from the outside have no clue as you don’t know the whole story.
So I was happy with the post you shared, it does help understand more ( even the little part of it )
In some ways that is good, being very resilient, but in the other side it is sad… that it is needed to survive. All of it.
You take care of yourself. 🤗🥰
Being here on Hive will help. As you say, many others are here to generate income too.
I believe in Hive and that it will help many around the world 🤓 let’s built.
Happy Friday to you too 👋🏻☀️

When I read the title, I thought that my knowledge of geography is very poor, because, in Russian, the title read: Caracas, Hungary... Hungary! Bill! It was a brainstorming session for me, ...friends, don't take the translators' word for granted). And the second brainstorming is the price of gasoline, which can become the dream of every motorist in Ukraine)
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
We certainly cannot blindly believe in translators, hehe. And well, the fuel issue here is enough to write a book about. We are oil producers and despite this and the fact that petrol is very cheap, we do not produce enough to supply the domestic market. And there is a great shortage of fuel, especially outside Caracas in the interior of the country.

Even here in rural Spain.
You find more and more ghost towns…
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
Yep, but it shouldn't be like that. Here, in some villages, the situation is really dramatic. Services are non-existent, and fuel shortages mean that even food is sometimes scarce.

Yes. but only you and I and many more people who cast their votes for congressmen understand this.

Thank you for the market trip sis❤ The inflation is really something to reckon with. And it is very interesting to find out that there are things that are costly here and less expensive in your city and there are also things that are cheaper here and costly there. Good luck to you in the challenge🤗
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
Thanks, sis! Inflation can be a big nightmare. Especially when salaries are not adjusted for inflation and you watch with dread as your purchasing power is eroded every day.
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
Indeed sis. I never even heard any news about salary increase.
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
Here they advertise it in the news but the increases are always so poor in comparison to the rising cost of living, that it makes you almost cry. ;)
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
Hope for better days :) It's a challenge most people are coping up now, the rising cost of things is choking.
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
Yes, the crisis of rising prices today is global, even if some places are more affected than others.
Let's hope for better days as you said, sis
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
Very much so sis, and yes, let's do that and keep grinding💪

That is flabbergasting, I presume there are long lines waiting to get it!
I see you pay with your debit card in Bs, so do you have dollar bank accounts as well, or do you have dollars in your hand or how does that work Super Eli?
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
In some areas, the lines are so long, and many people start to do it the night before.
As far as payments are concerned, this is the country of the unusual. On one hand, there is a lot of cash in dollars circulating, much more than in bolivars. Although it's a mess sometimes because it's not our currency, there are no coins for change and low denomination notes are sometimes in short supply. So change at the supermarket is an issue. Sometimes they want to force you to take something else or they want to give you a change depending on the amount in some fruit or sweets. It's a bit crazy for those who don't live it every day.
The bank accounts. For some time now, Venezuelan banks have opened some dollar accounts but they are only for transactions with accounts in the same bank since we don't have a dollar clearing house.
Some people have dollar accounts in the US and pay with them using Zelle. It is accepted in many places.
Now international credit cards are accepted almost everywhere, bolivar's credit cards are rarely used because the credit amounts are ridiculous.
Some sites accept PayPal payments and cryptos. And even I have seen very often that they accept Binance pay (transfers within Binance in USDT).
When people start to get used to something, zas, they launch something new to annoy you. A few weeks ago the government decided that since people don't want to use bolivars anymore there is now a 3% tax if you want to pay in dollars.
Here they don't let you get bored, and it seems their mission is to bother as much as they can.

I think you should really move to the US with your son sis...
Hi sis, good evening to you! Oh no. That's not in my plans. My husband's work is here. My mother is here. And if I ever decide or plan to move abroad I would not choose the US. I like it for vacations. But it's too expensive to live in. I would prefer a European country :)
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
same here sis.. European countries is more attractive to me actually I want to live in Tuscany! Sorry I just thought since your son is going to study there anyway let's just erase that thought hahaha.... oopps i should have use Leo to reply lol
It's okay sis. It's a valid thought. But at this point, even my son doesn't know what his long term plans are. because now he is going for 4 years to university but who knows where he will go next. For now, what I do want is to have the possibility to visit him sometime ;)
Tuscany is a nice choice sis 😍🤗
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
yep and I'm waiting for the opportunity that you'll visit him there, the colouring page that is returned to me is still waiting for me to sent it again to you hahaha
I watched one movie about Tuscany and I just fell in love with it :)
Posted Using LeoFinance Beta
Well, sis. When Rodrigo gets an address there, I will send it to you. I don't think we will visit him this year, but he will come for Christmas, and he also can send it by mail without a problem from there.
Tuscany is lovely. I was once in Florence when I was young, and it is so beautiful.
yay! that's a great idea sis! still hoping that it will reach you within this year!
Haven't been to any European countries but in my imagination I've already tour the whole Europe! hahaha
Hehe! Well, you will tour it someday, sis!
And yes, we can arrange for the drawing to be sent to my son, sis. I will love to have it 😍🤗😘

will tour it together sis! hahaha
yep.. will wait for the address
Hehe!! That would be so cool, sis :)
The 20% is really good..better than in banks 😅..
Yep! It's a very good opportunity in my opinion ;)
Gosh, the everyday person have it hard in Venezuela @coquicoin for a long time due to government policies gone wrong. Your cost of living I see continues to be expensive as I must say so do ours in Australia. We are all saying how expensive eating is now. Our supermarket prices have more than doubled and not unusual for just my hubby and myself to pay more than $100 for a little shop. My heart goes out to those in Australia and elsewhere in the world like in your country that have families.
Yep, the everyday person has it hard here and we have had it worse in recent years. The cost of living is too expensive for the salaries that normal people earn. The differences are big. And yes, families starting here have it hard. We can survive because we have a house. But young people don't have many options, and that's why most of them go abroad. Let's hope for better times.

What a great post and the inflation there is not only a nightmare but, it is insane! Your entire post was easy to follow and opened my eyes to some of the lesser-known things.
I had no idea the electricity was so cheap. But, cheap is relative if you aren't getting proper service. I have to say there are things that are priced about the same here, but, ours has gotten out of control also. The salaries are higher here and able to absorb some of the inflation, and I know Caracas is a little better than most parts of the country... which is scary.
Great post! Thanks for taking us along!
Thank you, Denise!
Insane is an appropriate word. Here even though we are out of hyperinflation. The latest measure of annualized inflation puts it at over 600%.
Electricity is still cheap, but the service sucks. Today, I have had three small power cuts. And outside Caracas, it is a nightmare with the power outages.
The salaries have been adjusting little by little, but they are far from keeping up with inflation. And the official minimum wage is 126 bolivares which at today's exchange rate is less than 30 dollars. That is what social security pensioners receive per month. It's crazy.
Thank you so much for stopping by 😊

That is crazy!!! I am not sure how people have survived there, to be honest with you. My brother's best friend was in business with him until he was banned from leaving Venezuela. He was single and considered a flight risk. It is all very sad for the country and the people... Oh, the people! Brave and strong people, continuing even though injustice is heaped upon them.
I pray daily that something will change and become the beautiful country of Venezuela once again.
Yes, it's crazy what has happened here. And honestly, I also look back, and I'm surprised how we managed to survive so much and still be where we are.
But in the end, I think that for now, some things won't change. Crises sometimes bring out the best and the worst in us, and here people have learned to reinvent themselves and look for ways to move forward. What I'm not sure about is that most of them have learned the lesson that populism doesn't help to solve real problems.
Anyway, thank you for your best wishes.
Have a great Wednesday and it's a pleasure to have you around. 🤗

Reading this, I see that we (Nigerians) may have it better than others because we earn in dollars and even with the massive drop in our currency, HBD is saving lives. I say, the more our currency drops, the less I have to fear because there is a lot a minimum amount of HBD can do. hehehe.
DREEMPORT
Here, as expensive as life has become, having access to a currency like HBD is a good opportunity. Nobody here wants to have our local currency, and that is why cryptocurrencies have been so popular here for a long time.

I got to know about Venezuela economy recently and I sometimes wonder how the government allow it to reach that level.
The world inflation is rising and I believe your country inflation will also be influenced. Things are expensive here as well and it doesn't look like it will get better, we can only hope for something better someday.
Hello! Well, the government was the main cause of the situation.
Here, although there is no longer hyperinflation, inflation is still very high. And of course, the world crisis affects, but Venezuela's biggest problems are internal and it is difficult that without a political change there will be a deep economic change.
But let's hope for better days for us all, here and there.

¡Wow!

¡Que tengas un exitoso y bendecido día!
Hola!

I figured that it was bad there @coquicoin, just didn't know how bad despite having friends who live there. I've heard of 4 hours of electricity but not about the food and gas (petrol). So, here they are trying to turn America into the same kind of condition as Venezuela, but there are still many people who are not aware of that. The money is being and has been filtered especially in the last two years into fewer and fewer hands while the people are the ones who suffer needlessly, same as Venezuela.
This post was obtained through Dreemport.
Hi!
Things are bad here and they were much worse. Food is very expensive but at least now there is plenty even if we don't produce much of it. A few years ago, the controls, corruption, and the idea of controlling the people created a terrible shortage of basic foodstuffs, so much so that there was a black market for these products. Services are terrible and fuel is scarce especially outside Caracas the capital because despite being an oil-producing country they have destroyed the industry so much that we don't even produce our petrol.
The world economy is going very badly and sadly not only here the money is increasingly going to few hands and it is the common people who are suffering the effects of the crisis.
Thanks for stopping by.
