The Role of Quality Sleep in Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle

(Edited)

One thing that I have come to discover that we usually face when it comes to health, it point down to either lack of some certain knowledge about some things. Also most of the time, it might not even be as a result of ignorance, it might as a result of us taking the knowledge with levity. Growing up, I have always been familiar with the importance of sleep but the truth is I didn't really know much about the advantages it has on our health not until I begin to get more older and the reality of life begins to dawn on me.

If there is a major factor that determine the state of our health, I will say it is the quality of sleep our body constantly received. In a country like Nigeria whereby everyone is constantly faced with so challenges and pressure to make it financially, it makes people to have less time to have quality sleep.

If there is an equation of the importance of quality sleep, I will say it is in the same level with balanced diet and exercising. But the most disappointing fact is a lot of us always despise the importance of sleep. On several occasions, a lot of us need to sacrifice sleep either for work, family or generally for our careers all in pursuit for success. Most of the time, I believe the society contributes to the neglecting of quality sleep in the lives of individuals.

The society has painted a picture whereby you must be successful. Nobody wants to associate with a failure. Medically, my research made me to understand that every adult is expected to have 8 hours quality of sleep daily as it helps the body to refresh and recharge. Having 8 hours of quality of sleep daily will help to shape the immune system and generally helps your brain to perform efficiency.

Take for example in my society Nigeria, there is always this stress every individual experience either due to lots of situations surrounding their lives. But with quality sleep, it helps to have a positive effect on our mental health. One of the things that happens to our body most especially our brain when we sleep is it helps to create this emotional balance which goes a long way to reduce stress.

In as much as lots of us might want to sacrifice our sleep either for work, family, education and career, let it be balanced. Know when to work and know when to have quality sleep. There is so much of negative effects that happens to our body when we refuse to work. Most of the time, when your body suffers for long due to lack of quality sleep, it can lead to inefficiency in decision making and can even lead to more mental health issues for you.

Someone reading this might be wondering, how can I start practicing quality sleep in my lifestyle. Well it is not really hard, all you need to do is to to look into your schedule and create that consciousness that no matter what, nothing will take the place of your sleep daily. Most of the time, one of the things I usually do, is to try to attend to every work I need to do for the day. Immediately when it is 11pm, I am shutting down everything to have my quality sleep. The consciousness needs to start from you first so that you need quality sleep before it can take massive shape and it is very necessary.
