Would You Try?

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to have a fun thought experiment about being a guest on a podcast of some sort, and would I even be able to do it?

Would You Try?

I had a random thought while listening to a podcast the other day: would I make any type of interesting guest for someone to have on?

IMG_2805.jpg

This was a serious thought that I had. Not because I think of myself as any bit interesting outside of my specific focus of work, but overall - would I be able to contribute to a podcast episode that somebody has? This was a really fascinating thought experiment for me!

I know that I write quite a bit on Hive - some of it is pretty bland and dry, other bits of it are a little bit entertaining perhaps, but overall it's mostly just me and my thoughts. I was thinking about expanding myself though, and trying to figure out different ways to get content out there - hobby type of content. Then I was thinking: what type of podcast would I even try to go on?

I don't think I could be interesting enough for a big podcast, with plenty of names out there, but some of the smaller ones? Perhaps, but what the hell would I talk about? I am pretty good at my job and career - but it's not exactly something I am well known for in that community itself. I have some decent local impacts but am I driving big change in the space? Not really, so if that's not the direction, then what would be?

IMG_2807.jpg

I think it's an interesting bit of self reflection to try and think of things like this. I know that I don't really like to hear myself talk, despite doing it all day every day for work. Can I figure out something to talk about that is not garbage for an hour, two hours to a podcast audience? That's definitely a daunting task but I think that I would like to try it one day.

Podcasts have definitely changed the world in the last 5-7 years. The legacy media doesn't have the stranglehold on information that it used to and it's because of podcasts. Sure there are gigantic ones like Joe Rogan but there are also dozens of smaller ones that I listen to and thoroughly enjoy. It's better than watching a movie for me, in all honesty.

I used to love to comb through the History Channel, Discovery Channel and (when it was actually "learning") the Learning Channel as a kid. I certainly enjoyed anime shows like Dragon Ball but I much preferred to learn more about the world through those educational mediums than I did other things. Listening to podcasts for me is a way for me to keep that old flame alive in my mind.

I wonder if I'm a bit too all-over the place with the bits of information that I have about some topics such as the importance of methylation of vitamin B in the brain, or the exercises that we can do to strengthen our eye muscles depending on the issue we are having. Do any of these things connect? Does any of it make it a worthy episode for a podcast to have on? Certainly all kinds of things that I've been tossing around the old noggin!

I think it's important to just ponder these things. These are the hard questions that I think move brain synapses and try to keep things elastic which is really important for our brains as we get older!

If you get invited to a podcast, I think that's because the host believes you could have a great impact to his audience, otherwise he won't. 😅

So, I say go for it. If it's a topic close to your heart, I think it would just flow naturally and it would connect to people.

I haven't been invited to one yet, but I would certainly like to give it a shot! I think the challenge is trying to figure out what to say lol. I do like challenges though and this is another challenge!

I don't think I will try to be the guest. I am not a very good speaker, and for sure I don't have anything interesting to tell about me and my life. The funny thing here in my country is that some of the popular podcast here, could get the guest in trouble, maybe because the guest are to excited and blowing up unnecessary info which lead to the problem. Sone even went to jail because of that.

I think there are a lot of things we can do to improve to prep for something like that. I know a lot of people use writing in English as a way to get better at doing it. I know that's not the best example, but I think that one is pretty relevant.

You never know, you could do a photography one and talk about your macro photography methods and skills! :D

I would definitely do it lol I don't know how to describe it except I'm self-assured enough to know it's something I could do. Granted, so long as the topic isn't something outlandish, like math or physics 😵

But there are plenty of modern topics to contribute to. Recently there's been homelessness, abortion, homeschooling, trends in sexuality, "Christ in Christmas," stuff like that... Aside from controversial, there's topics that we've always pondered about, like the afterlife, religion, conspiracy theories, aliens... Even go really basic, like animals, natural disasters, funny stuff your kid does/says, etc.

Really great topic, thank you for sharing! I hope you enjoy your week 🙏

Yeah it's a fun thought experiment! I know I would like to do one at some point, and maybe get into doing it more regularly. I think the challenge is certainly the topics. I would like to think that the ones I would be covering wouldn't be touchy but you never know what people are fragile about these days lol.

We have a lot to share in terms of schooling, so I wonder if that might be more of our focus!

Honestly would love to go on one, I wouldn't mind sharing my adventures. I'm a good speaker especially when it's not a huge (physical) audience. But I'm sure you would be fine if you had to speak.

Yeah I could certainly speak at this point, I've gotten over most of my public speaking issues. I would certainly try it one day that's for sure!

I've been on some long range shooting podcasts back not too long ago, I actually wrote about it here on Hive. I enjoyed it, had some laughs and despite being a little nervous about having to answer "listener questions" I reckon I did ok. Would I do it again? Maybe, but I'm not one to want the spotlight so most probably not.

That's cool you've been on one! I think that's good because it's a topic you're good at and passionate about. I can bet there were nerves but like doing anything the first time, there are always butterflies that you get over.

I do try to stay out of the spotlight in many things, but I am not sure if that is a good or a bad thing. We need more positive people in the spotlight to combat the insanity we are living in.

It was a good experience that happened more than once. It was good to see behind the scenes, the equipment and the process. The subject matter was stuff I'm familiar with of course but it was more of a conversation albeit somewhat structured. I don't know how the episodes turned out though, I have never listened to it, don't want to hear myself, but I'm told the episodes were pretty good.

As for your last comment...yep, I agree, we need more of the right influences and less of the wrong.

Haha. Being an introvert, I don't think I would be keen. That said, I think it depends on the topic. If it's a topic that I am passionate about, I am sure I will be able to talk a lot about it. But it's those small talk/general talk stuff, then I probably would be giving monosyllabic answers. Lol.

I think if you did get invited to go on a podcast you should, as I am sure you have plenty of interesting things to say, I would listen in to it and i seldom listen to podcasts

but to answer your question would i do it, probably no, I am shy and doing a written interview which I just did I would be fine with, but a ive podcast no way LOL

Yeah it depends on the personality of the person whether being a guest would be a good idea or not!

I also agree that listening to a podcast is often more beneficial than watching a movie that's an hour or two or two in duration. At this point in time, I think the answer is probably no. I don't think I have sufficient knowledge within a range of topics and it's still a bit hard for me to bridge the gap between thoughts and experiences. But I reckon that it may be a fun experience to just sit and chat about one's life experience so far and lessons that can be drawn from it.

Yeah podcasts are way more a part of my day than anything television related is!

I think a lot of what makes a good podcast is being able to chat about a variety of topics, one of them being regular life experiences!

I think we might never really know how good or bad we sound with something like a podcast unless try.
Some of the people who actually are good podcasters weren't always that way.
So I think we might not really need to need to figure it out completely to try it out.

Yeah it's important to give something like that a try! You never know what something will turn into unless you try. There is also the improvements through experience that's for sure.
