Trainset Hobby Fun
Hi fellow Hiveians,
Today I wanted to share some of the trainset that the little man and I got the chance to play with recently!
Trainset Hobby Fun
We went to visit some family recently and I haven't seen them in unfortunately too long. It was a lot of fun to be able to see them and hang out with them but one of the things I was really looking forward to, is to see if they still had the train set that I always loved playing with as a kid!
The little man is a lot like me in that he has a lot of the same interests as I do, which I guess is a nature versus nurture discussion. I don't know exactly if it's more one or the other but in any case, I love the model train sets! We got a chance to play with some of my family's hobby train set and damn was he loving it let me tell you!
My family member used to have a massive train set in their house and it wrapped around the whole attic and was crazy how complex it was and all the different features and things that went into it! They have since scaled it back though, as they are getting older and are busy with other things. Still though, the train set here was so much fun to walk around and explore the various details! I know that one day the little man is going to want to have a set like this in our house if we can find the space for it lol
The details all over the place were super cool! Having little puffs of cotton balls that represent the smoke coming out of the tops of the train was genius for sure lol
What was a lot of fun for me was that I got one of the more finnicky trains to run nicely! There was one train that just wasn't doing well because it was a different style, one that was a little fancier and supposed to operate better but it ended up being one that was overly complicated and needed some special work.
The train didn't really run well for months from what they said so I figured I would give it a whirl and spent most of my time with the train set on getting that one to run! You can see it here, it's moving pretty well at this point! :D
The train is one that has a different mechanism for how it connects it's energy to produce the movement. I don't remember the type of connection it was as this was a while ago now, but I remember that it took a lot of effort to get it to run and when it did, it puttered along and then stopped and I had to coax it for quite a while. By the end, we were pumped as it was running like a dream!
You can see it humming around the track here. It was pretty fast! I love adding all the cool and small details to it like the sandy ground, raised track and all that to make it feel more realistic and like a set of train tracks running through the mountains.
Having the extra cars lying around doesn't hurt either! Those extra cars make it seem like they are waiting to be loaded up with some stuff and taken off down the tracks.
It felt great to go back and relive some of my childhood where I got to play with these trains again! It's been well over a decade since I got to see these trains and boy do I miss it! I would love to go back and spend a day or two helping him build it up and I know the little man will definitely agree on that one! Lol. We soaked up every minute of the few hours that we got to play with the trains and I will say that it was one of my favorite times of the year so far getting to do that!

Brilliant! I love model railways was just in the middle of writing a post about an exhibition I went to recently! That is such a big layout and it's so nice when you have that much space to play with. What a coincidence.
Get the little 'un a trainset. Be a super Dad!
Haha I would love to, trust me! We just have zero space for it and my wife would kill me if I got one lol.
The space he had before was 5x this it was nuts! It was once an entire half of a house on the 2nd floor. Then he converted the attic area of his barn into it as well and that was 3X the size of the original one hahaha like 15x this size! It was nuts but so much fun.
I’ll have to keep an eye out for the post! I love the model trains and I’m going to look up if there’s anything near us that has this stuff to go and explore!
When I was a child I loved a train set that my cousin used to have, and I could stay hours looking at it.
How nice that you and your little man had such a great time with that train set which seems so cool.
Thank you! It was awesome indeed.
I’m glad you got to experience it as a kid! I think these things are so fun as they are incredibly creative and detailed!
That is a very cool train set. That must be giving you a lot of beautiful memories which now you can pass down also to the little man. : )
I bet he enjoys it as much as you used to.

Yeah! It was a lot of fun to enjoy it with him, he loves these types of things so I'm glad that he got to play with it. He has seen a train set before but never one where he could touch it so that was great!
I gifted $PIZZA slices here:

That's a proper trainset!! My wife's dad had a big massive sweet and it had loads of realistic touched which were awesome. It sucks you in!
Yeah it totally sucks you in! It's a lot of fun and you feel like you're in the middle of a town or something! I'm glad you've had some fun with trains too!
Yay! 🤗

Wow! If this is the scaled back version, the original version must have been so impressive
Yeah the original had two phases: one was the second half of the 2nd floor of their house. It was about 30 feet long and 15 feet wide just about which is what I used as a kid. Then he built a giant barn on his property and the set was the whole 2nd floor of the barn!! I think his barn was 30 feet by 120 feet or something, it was huge lol. It was the periphery of it with the middle reserved for the supplies and stuff but needless to say it was giant! Lol I miss it a lot but I’m glad to have had the chance to show the little man this one! His only other experience with a train set was seeing one at a fair so getting to touch it and all that was amazing!
When I was 4-5, kindergarten, I can still remember the house I lived in, I had a pretty fancy train set. I'd set up little GI-Joe's around the tracks like they're gonna rob the thing and shoot'em in the face with my BB gun.
My favorite part was when I'd get brand new train cars and watch them go around and around and around and around the tracks a few times before seeing how well they held up to an M-80 ignition.
Hahah Murica baby! M80’s were the shit back in the 80’s and 90’s. Awesome to play with basically a little dynamite when we were kids and the pansies didn’t take over!
That’s cool dude, we used to set up GI Joe’s in our lego set and stuff too!
Speaking of.. I purchased a 12 gauge yesterday and didn't even have ID on me. And if that doesn't trip out any viewers, wait'll they see where I got it...
Nice dude, I actually looked at a 12 the other day. Would be nice! I need a .45 first though, I’ve been seeing bear scat on our hikes lately and I asked the dudes at the gun store I’ve been going to what would help and they said my 9mm would just piss the bear off it doesn’t have the strength to penetrate it but .45 does at a minimum. I was a little deflated by that lol now I might need to figure out how to convince my wife for me to get a .45 lol
Big huge ONES you got there. When I see they've been around, my instinct is haul ass the way I came!
Chooo! Chooooo!!!
Sorry that I missed this post when I could still upvote it!
I'm into model railroading myself. I don't have a layout to run the trains on, but I have a fair amount of trains on my display shelves. I just don't have the necessary space to build a train layout where I live now.
