Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to share a cool experience we got to have recently visiting Portsmouth New Hampshire!

Tall Ships Portsmouth New Hampshire

One of the things that we really love is finding some type of activity that we wouldn't be looking to do necessarily but stumble upon it randomly while doing something else.

We went to the beach, one of our every weekend activities but the tide was coming in and we didn't plan it properly so we decided that we were going to end up doing something different. That something different turned out to be something really cool that I haven't gotten to do in a while: see some old wooden ships!

There were 2 ships here, one of them was a new one and one of them was a replica of an old ship, one of the best ships to cross the Atlantic ocean back in the day! The first ship you can see here is one that is from Bermuda and it's got some cool history to it. It's a ship that is built by students of Bermuda in high school with the help of some master crafters of course, but as a way to teach the children skills and give them good real-world knowledge. I think that's awesome!

The second ship though was way cooler lol. This was a replica ship of the Nyckel (had some other name to it but I forget). The Nyckel was a Belgian ship I think it was, back in the 1600's when the Europeans started to settle America. It was the most successful ship that operated at the time! The information they told was that the more famous ships like the Mayflower only had one voyage from Europe to America but they ended up sinking. The Nyckel here successfully made the crossing FOUR times! That's insane for a wooden ship of the day. Most of the ships sank at sea and stranded people or everyone died. But this ship here had some incredible luck and managed to stay afloat and alive for four crossings back and forth! That's 8 voyages!

The ship, although remodeled, was not the original one. We have an original ship I think it is, the USS Constitution from way back in the day but the Nyckel here was a ship that was rebuilt from drawings and paintings of the ship and some knowledge of the way they built and modeled ships at the time. Still had some really cool stuff to it!

One of the cool things is they put some replica cannons on board! The ship certainly needed to carry cannons so that it could defend itself from pirates at the time. On the voyages back to Europe, one of the things that the ship was carrying was beaver pelts. Beaver pelts were apparently hot fashion in Europe at the time so they were harvesting a lot of them in America and sending them overseas.

The little man was certainly having fun with the cannons!

ts2.jpg

The ropes on the ship were insane! They had so many ropes, which is understandable considering that it was a sailing ship and all lol. They were talking about how they would use some mechanical levers on the ship to move the ropes since they were so heavy and to unfurl the sail or pull it back together. The ingenuity of people is quite amazing when you think about it. The ships had to do a lot of things and people invented all kinds of unique ways to rise to the challenges!

This was the beauty of the ship seen from the exterior. Apologies to the woman there that looks like I mainly got her ass in the photo hahaha sorry!

The ropes and all kinds of things on the outside of the ship were wild to think about people climbing them and stuff. What's really cool as well is the city of Portsmouth offers highschool kids an opportunity to spend a week on the ship in the summer to learn all about sailing and doing the maritime stuff! I would love to sign the little man up one day, but I don't think we will be living in the area here by the time that comes around.

Underneath the ship, they did retrofit it to have modern amenities like normal food and sleeping quarters and all that. It's even got diesel engines for when it can't use the sails to navigate around. Cheating if you ask me! :D

Seeing all of the different ropes, pulleys and connections everywhere was incredible! I would love to spend time on the ship just to mess around with all of that stuff honestly lol

Finally what was super cool was there was a real barrel of aging Makers Mark whiskey on board! The barrel makes the trip as a way to naturally age and mature the whiskey which was something I had no idea but that seems awesome. I'm sure there is a premium charge for it lol but maybe I would pay it! Lol. There was a rich dude on board asking if he could buy the barrel as it was. I don't think they sold it to him but probably referred him back to the company to figure it out.

A ship with a model like that of course still has its own beauty, even though the ship is still very good and the picture is very beautiful

Looks like fun! Totally miss sailing!

Yeah I want to incorporate a little bit of privacy here! Not everyone goes for privacy anymore and I think that's wrong.

I've never been sailing but I think it would be pretty fun! A lot of work for sure but fun.

They are amazing as is the coincidence that I was watching a video on YT last by two English sailors who were also there !

Looks like a great day out on a beautiful day :-)

People were here recording about the ships? That's cool! It drew pretty big crowds as they usually do, we've seen a few times that ships came into port that were like this. Would be cool if you watched something on these ships then randomly came to see this post here!

It was a great day, a little warm but thankfully we had our good sun hats lol

Wow the ship looks like something out of pirates of the Caribbean 😂😂. I would totally love to be on this, seems like the little man had fun. Im so jealous. thanks for sharing

Thanks! Yeah he had fun for sure. He's an active learner and loves doing something to learn about it instead of reading it in a book. Was a great day!

Very cool. We rode on something similar once from Battery Park in NYC to the Statue of Liberty and back. Won't forget that one any time soon.

Nice! I've never gotten to ride on one but would love to do that. Would have been awesome to do that in a place like NY harbor and the statue.

This place looks pretty awesome. The massive ships just have been cool to see, I saw a few in the port at Baltimore a few weeks back.

My girlfriend keeps begging me to take her to Cape Cod, Provincetown, and Salem, MA. You ever been to or live close to any of those places? I’m not sold on the idea still, especially because for work reason she has this fantasy of going in the dead of winter when there is nothing but snow everywhere.

That’s cool, never been to Baltimore but might drive through there at some point, I like when places have these historical things hanging around!

Those are all beautiful places! I grew up not far from salem and it’s certainly an interesting place full of historical stuff. If you’re going to go, go around October when there’s all kinds of Halloween stuff! If you do go before I move we need to meet up man, if you’re interested! I’m not too far from that area! Would be cool to grab lunch or something!

Cape cod is incredible and has so much to it. Provincetown is at the very tip of it and it’s an ..interesting place to say the least. Not my cup of tea but it’s got a lot of cool history. Beginning to end the cape is like 4 hours long of a drive and it’s got all kinds of beautiful beaches, ponds and all that. Plus delicious sea food everywhere!

Baltimore is cool, but damn is it dirty.

I knew you'd know something about the area in question. Didn't realize that you grew up so close to Salem though. That bit about going during Halloween sounds like a great idea. Maybe I can convince her that would be better than December/January.

I'd 100% be down to meet up bro. I'll be sure to post about any trip that ends up getting planned.

Yeah I grew up really close! Was a good area but one of the really funny things is that even though I grew up near it and had access to it whenever I wanted I haven't really done the tourist stuff lol. A popular one is the salem witch trials and I've never done the walking tour. Maybe we will fix that this year ourselves!

If you do make plans to visit tag me dude! I'll make sure to connect with you if we're here but even if we aren't I can give you lots of recommendations of things to check out and things to not bother with. Some areas tend to be tourist traps.

Tourist stuff seems kind of silly whenever you're a local. It took me 20+ years to try white water rafting here in WV and we have some of the best rivers in the world for it. I'm going again in a few weeks actually.

I'll remember you bro 😎

WOW that is so cool you got to see these, impressive that first one was built by students

and that second one WOW amazing,

Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk :), I truly enjoy exploring the world virtually each Wednesday seeing walks from all around the globe and feeling I am there and experiencing it all myself, such as I did in your post just now :)

I know I was shocked to learn that it was built by students that was awesome! I love seeing these old wooden ships even if they are replicas!

Ohh yes i love seeing them as well, imagining what it was like sailing on them back in the day

Lol the lion at the front of the ship is kinda funny🫢

I definitely would’ve payed for the whiskey too if I could afford it lol. Or maybe not since I can’t drink whiskey. Would be cool to drink something that old though.

You guys are living the dream life haha. Keep having fun and enjoy:)

Thanks man, I know we are incredibly lucky to live where we do and some of the things that we get to do. A lot of these things I’m doing to give my son an educational experience that I think is far more effective for him. He’s a very hands on kid! Isn’t interested in something that isn’t active which I can’t blame him.

I wanted to knock that barrel of whiskey off and take it! Makers mark is some good stuff!

The stuff you end up doing with your kid is always so interesting

Hahah thanks! It's our own version of home schooling! I’m always more interested in something if I can physically go see it and learn about it instead of looking at it in a book. Plus it brings on all kinds of questions and discussions from him like how did people eat, how did they poop (lol typical boy!) and all that stuff. Got a few more good trips planned!

That second ship is really quite something. I've always loved old ships like this (I know it's a replica of the original) but can you imagine what it would have been like in the ports back then? Way cooler than now.

Of course your the kids would be having loads of fun with the cannons, they go boom!

The rope work is truly quite awe inspiring, the mechanics involved to get everything working, I'm not surprised they called it the "poop deck".

Hahah yeah for sure! The ropes were incredible and thinking that peoples sole job, which was quite respected, was creating rope.

I can only imagine how cool it would have been to see the harbors with these giant ships in it. The good thing about us nowadays is we can travel to see these things but back then they would have to spend days, weeks or months to see something like this. Wild!

These ships are awesome. Amazing that they used it to cross oceans and survived.
