Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to share the random encounters we've had with snakes!

Snakes Surreptitiously Sneaking

I don't know what it is about this year but we seem to be a magnet for snakes. The little man and I have seen no less than 5 different snakes this year, and it's only a month and a half into our outdoor adventures for the warmer weather! What the hell is going on there?! Lol.

The place we live in doesn't have that many dangerous critters when it comes to poisonous stuff which is good, and these snakes are no different. They are a non-poisonous few different species of snakes so that makes it a little bit easier. I know in other areas even just a few hundred miles south of us, we have quite a number of dangerous critters and snakes. What we found here though are ones that are dangerous to an extent but only if you piss them off and they bite you, to which you could get an infection from.

This fella here is a water snake, and can sometimes be confused with a water moccasin but that's only to people who are unsure of what they are looking at. I'm not an expert but I do know that these are thankfully harmless snakes to be around and won't pose a threat to us unless we piss them off with which they will just give us a bite as a warning and slither off. He was sitting on the rocks sunning and enjoying life! There were some unfortunate people at the spot we went to and they sadly poked the guy into the water which I didn't enjoy. I wanted to leave him alone and potentially give him a snack if we got something small enough!

IMG_1625.jpg

Where things started to get a little wild was seeing this fella here! The little man and I go to a lot of different places around us for some fishing and this place is one of my personal favorites. It's got really nice and shallow water which is perfect for busting out the waders and getting into the thick of it! We were exploring around the area when all of a sudden the little man let out a shout! I asked him what happened, thinking a fish hit him or something and he said that he saw a snake!

IMG_1485.jpg

It certainly wasn't the first time we saw a snake and I figured that it was a water snake like the one above so I told him to relax and come back over until I was done setting up the pole. I got finished with that and we went back into the water and that's when I saw what scared him. I will admit that I was also a little surprised! This thing looks a lot more intimidating than a water snake does, with the different colors and stuff! I was also surprised by the size of it, this thing was a fully grown adult! I wonder what made the thing die, if it was old age or if it swallowed something that ended up killing it. I didn't really want to find out, so I moved it to the shallows as you can see above and left it there for a racoon or some other opportunistic animal to walk by and grab the thing for a snack after the night had fallen.

IMG_1484.jpg

Fast forward a couple weeks and we get this little shit right here! This is another corn snake, which is supposed to be cool. I was telling @emma-h2 about this little fucker the other day. The little man and I went to this absolutely beautiful place, the Wachusett Reservoir in central Massachusetts and we were walking around trying to catch something. By something, we usually mean fish.. but I guess in this case we were really open for anything we could get???? I will say that I have never caught a snake on a fishing pole before.. and I don't know of many people that have. I have certainly grabbed the little shits by the tail and held them but never have they taken a whack at my fishing bait! I was perplexed by this dude for sure! Lol

IMG_1528.jpg

What annoyed me even more here was that he stole my damn bait!! I was hoping to get it back from him but nope, he saw this as a meal and fucking housed the damn thing. I was like what the fuck bro?! Give it back! I couldn't go into the water to give it a little tap on the head to give me my stuff back because it was a reservoir and they will fine you if you walk in the water.. so I had to just watch him make the mistake of grabbing my fake rubber worm here and taking it to the dinner table for himself. I wonder if the corn snake that the little man found above, dead, suffered the same fate as this asshole was going to?! I certainly think that eating a fisherman's worm is not going to sit well in terms of the ability to survive. I am hopefully mistaken though and he shit it out whole, the way it went in, or puked it up and moved on with his day of eating small fish.

IMG_1529.jpg

This has been a hell of an outdoor summer so far, we had no idea that we would be seeing so many damn snakes! Lol I wonder if dandays will see this post, I know he loves snakes and would jump for sheer joy at seeing a bunch of pictures of them :D

Hell to the no! I never caught a snake while fishing either and hope I never do. Snapping turtle ✔ Alligator ✔

Did you cut the fishing line or pull the snake out and kill it?

We've had a weird year of too many nocturnal sightings of female garter snakes around the concrete area by the front doorway to our house. Not cool.

Haha the garter snakes are great for keeping bugs and other things at bay! It was one of the weirdest things for sure, I've never heard of someone catching a snake either like that lol. We just let it go and eat the worm. I don't know what kind of snake it is for sure.. so we let it do what it wanted and it swam away hahaha.

I haven't caught a snake but many turtles and once a duck. The duck was interesting, poor thing I just cut the line. Turtles I bring in step on shell pull line out to bring head out extended and use some needle nose to get my gear back. I have often thought fishing the river what would be the odds of catching an odder or beaver.

Haha I know I'm glad I haven't caught a mammal yet but I'm sure we will at some point. The turtles we have caught before but thankfully they get off the hook without much fuss. They learn a sharp lesson that's for sure!

Usually I don't throw at ducks he came in my line path. I cut it rather quickly he flapped his wing in the water a bit. Can you imagine if he took off flying, haha? Now I speed reel if I pass one. But I have drug bait by them 10,000 times before and no issues. Next question harder to catch a musky or duck 🤣 😂🤣?

Be careful! That's a rattle headed copper moccasin! Very dangerous.

Awesome pictures though.

Hahah damn, I hate when people give information like that and people I talk to out in the wild are wrong. The guy that was fishing with us when this snake was there said it was a corn snake. I didn't know and thankfully we stay far enough away from them so they don't risk us getting hurt lol. This snake that ate my lure was quite funny though, he was being fed by the other guy every so often so he kept coming over asking "hey, gimme a fish!!" and was not shy about hanging out near us.

Sure look like a banded watersnake and acorn snake to me. What’s surprise catch. Hope it didn’t get a tummy ache from the rubber bait. How did it get off the hook?

It flipped around and got the worm loose then just finished eating it lol and swam away.

I'm conflicted! There are some say that it looks like a water moccasin and others say it's a corn snake. I don't know what one hahaha but we will steer clear of it. Thankfully it wasn't interested in biting us, just food.

Come to think of it, I think the one who stole your bait is also a watersnake, maybe juvenile, not a corn. I don't think it's a water moccasin = cottonmouth as they are only found in the southern states and you're in MA, right? Did you get a good shot of its eyes? Are they slitted or round?

In any case - steering clear of any of them would be my POA as well.

BTW - it's a pretty awesome photo, the snake going for the fish bait.

This is such a cool post, what an encounter. I know that it's a really weird experience, I mean my brother fishes a lot and I don't think he's ever caught a snake before, so that's definitely one for the books, I must tell him about this. They are very pretty. I know that most people don't really like snakes but I don't really mind them, as long as they are over there and not chomping on my ankle.

I so enjoyed this, thanks for tagging me 😁

Hahaha yeah exactly. They can do whatever they want over yonder but just don't come looking at me for a snack or something and we're good.

I've never caught a snake before either so this one is definitely one of those weird ones! I wonder if the thing died trying to digest or shit out the rubber worm lol.

I'm glad you enjoyed this one! I had to write it after talking with you in those comments lol

My Daughter saw a moccasin in the water here, and asked me how to catch it. Since she was fishing for catfish with a treble hook, I told her to cast across it, and haul back to snag it. She did, and said "I got it!" Followed by "I don't want it", LOL!!!!

Fortunately, when she stopped pulling it in; it got off the hook. She was relieved, and went back to fishing for catfish....

😳👌👍💙🙏📖🙏💗

Hahaha that’s awesome! Those treble hooks are nuts! I’ve caught a few fish recently by the barbs getting stuck in them. One on the back and one yesterday on the belly. Funny stuff!

There is a fish here called a paddle fish, and the only way to catch it is by snagging. There are some just below Keystone dam in the swift water. Since a hundred pounds and 5 foot long is possible, combined with fast water; tackle used for deep sea fishing is needed, to land one.

Sink that hook, and it's War....

👍😁😳🤕🤠

Damn dude that’s wild! Sounds like a lot of fun lol I’m sure people who don’t know look at you funny why you’ve got deep sea tackle lol

They sell a lot of heavy fishing gear for those beasties! Some of the catfish here are in the 40 pounds range too, and occasionally there is a noodler that gets drowned...the catfish won.

🤔😳🤕😞😑

Hahah no thanks, noodling isn’t something I think I would ever be doing but that’s wild. I guess we have carp here that requires heavy gear, some 40-50 pound ones in the major rivers in the area.

They do get big for sure! We caught one on a yo-yo that was big enough that it broke the hook, when I tried to string it. My Daughter was relieved, because she told me we didn't have room in the boat for it!

I understand that carp pressure can quite well, I'll have to try that. We can take carp with a bow and arrow here, with no catch limit.

👍💗🤠🎯😁👌💙😳

Give me the snake that is very scary because it does not know when it will attack and end the life of a person.

What a stunning Water Snake. Some form of Nerodia?
We found a Nerodia sipedon earlier, as well as a Cottonmouth and a Copperhead!

Not entirely sure what classification it is but they are some great ones for sure! I would rather not find a cottonmouth lol
