Out of Business Market Friday

I've seen quite a few people in my list of people I follow post on some #marketfriday jazz but for whatever reason, I didn't partake in it! I had visited a local department store for the crazy sales that were going on and got a few pictures of the offerings so I figured I might as well turn it, and the story that goes along with it, into a #marketfriday post!

This business, Rotmans, is one that was started by one guy many years ago with a passion for selling things and he was good with furniture so he ended up opening up his own furniture store. It's funny because I've never been there until sadly the place was going out of business! When I drove up, I thought it was just a smaller place inside or something but I was moseying around the place and then it just kept on going.. and going.. like the energizer bunny LOL. It turns out the place is 5 full floors of a massive warehouse full of furniture! Holy shit that's definitely the biggest store I've ever been in I think. Absolutely several hundred thousand square feet of stuff!

I had gone into the place in search of a couch of some kind, given that we aren't going to be moving out of the current place we are living in for a while so we figure why not get a couch and make it feel more like home instead of a college apartment lol.

This business situation is sad. When I was walking around the store, I was curious as to what was going on with the place and why they had to sell the business. The place was massive and it had several dozen sales employees so it seems like they were doing quite well for themselves! I overheard one of the associates though. This guy built a multi million dollar furniture business, local to and exclusive to New England, and he has to sell the whole thing and close it all down because he doesn't have anyone to pass the business along to! That broke my heart to hear, putting your passion and life into something and in the end you have to get rid of it all and sell the business because nobody is there or wants to take it over from you so you can retire.

I think the same situation happened with one of the craft stores in America, JoAnn fabrics maybe? Or was it Michaels? I forget which one it was, but it was a craft store and the family member(s) that inherited it didn't want to deal with the hassle of the business and sold it all off. That's terrible! I wonder if it has anything to do with laziness of the generation or what, but if someone built something so big, it's only respectful to keep it going!

The place though, Rotmans, had all kinds of crazy and beautiful looking stuff. What was amazing was that so much of it was so expensive lol I was shocked! There were definitely high quality things all over the place but I didn't expect to see authentic, hand-made Persian rugs! I don't know squat about the rugs themselves but I do know if it's a real one, they garner quite a bit of money to buy one!

The thing was giant too lol I was like whoa what the hell? I don't even think this thing would fit in our living room! Lol. Definitely someone who's got quite a bit of money and space would be the group that would buy this thing up!

The details on it are so intricate and incredible. I can't imagine spending four years stitching the thing together, that is absolutely an art form and likely one that will not remain for very long with how much people try to do things fast and automatic. These handmade things are certainly ones that decrease in numbers of being made I think.

I was completely blown away though when I looked at the price tag on the damn thing! 24,000 dollars on sale?!?! Holy shit batman that's crazy money to spend on a damn carpet lol. That cost more than my car! I then almost choked on my breath when I saw the full price of the damn thing was over 80,000 dollars LOL holy crap! If there is one thing I can guarantee, unless I've got as much money as Musk does, there is no damn way in hell that I would be buying a damn 80,000 dollar rug! Lol

Supposedly a family member of ours has an authentic rug but I am doubtful of the legitimacy of that claim. If we ever get it one day though, I will be sure to try and get that thing appraised after seeing these insane prices! I would sell it in a minute I think, given how much the little man makes a mess in the house hahaha he would totally spill some stuff on it that would stain it! We don't keep nice things in the house specifically for that reason lol.

As sad as it was seeing the business in the stages of closing, I was glad that I did get to visit it once and wonder at the sheer size of it all and pay some mental respects to the guy who started it all so many years ago with just a passion and business idea. Those don't happen too often these days I don't think!

I wonder if it has something to do with the laziness of the generation or what, but if someone built something this big, it's respectful to keep it going!

It is reasonable to doubt this to maintain a business may be in the hands of generations, but it turns out that sometimes it is not because of laziness, I explain why I mention this: my parents had many properties in my country personal between houses, land, making and 2 shopping centers, the only one of their descendants in this country is me and more than 20 years ago the socio-political misfortune came to my country, my family has more than 40 years in the USA and other countries and I took over the business came the era of expropriation and I had to sell all of them before ..., it was hard and sad, I had to sell all of them. ..., it was hard and sad the last thing I just sold a year ago was a land of 4000 square meters in a city in the Venezuelan Andes of my country below the real price for the devaluation in all ... I think this same thing is happening in other countries ...

Yeah there is a lot to be said about the crazy situation that is in other countries. Small businesses are the best things for the working and middle class folks! That's what keeps us employed and doing business, not these big corporations but there is definitely a lot of shenanigans afoot to force small businesses to close. Sorry you had to sell it all off! That sucks!

Thank you for your empathy, it really was the best option we took as a family in the face of the devaluation of all assets and real estate in my country. Definitely this sucks, only those who are plugged into the government have control of everything.

Welcome to Market Friday, @cmplxty. It's a great community and initiative run by @dswigle. Be sure to get to know her and add her name to your blog. And if you haven't yet done so, be sure to add your post link to her latest [Market Friday blog post](https://peakd.com/hive-196308/@dswigle/market-fridays-countdown-to-christmas-fifty-one-days-and-counting, which also has the "rules of the road" for Market Friday. :-)

This post is awesome. I agree, it is so sad when iconic stores go out of business. I would have loved to be that guy's heir and take it on! I think you're right that several big craft stores have gone out of business. You might be thinking of Hancock Fabrics. I think JoAnn is still alive and kicking, and Michael's is definitely thriving.

Happy Market Friday!

Cool thanks, I don't normally do the tagging piece but I'll keep that in mind for the next one! I'll drop the link in her post!

Yeah I wouldn't have complained about being the guys heir lol it could be a difficult situation but not one I wouldn't rise to the occasion for!

Yeah I'm not sure which craft store went out of business, we had a pretty popular one but now it's gone sadly. We did get some stuff for a discount in the closing sale but still lol

AC Moore closed in 2019/2020 but I am not sure if it is the one you are thinking about. Michaels was sold the 40 or so leases still active and some stock. I think they no longer wished to compete in such a competitive market, although people loved them.

This furniture store sounds amazing. A high-end store under wraps. The rug prices are insane, but, they are better priced at the source. Still crazy expensive, but, if you have the right customers, it is a great business. Now, you may only sell 3 or 4 a year! Because who buys carpets that cost more than an automobile? :) They are exceedingly beautiful, but geez, you can eat it or breed it, you can just walk on it and get it dirty.

I ask you, is that sensible?

I am so glad you shared your market experience with us. As a side note, my mom taught me something really helpful about raising kids. She had 9 of them, so I consider her an almost expert. :) When she first had kids, she had crystal. statues figurines... little fun stuff around the house. She never moved any of it. It never got touched by any of her kids because it wasn't strange. It was something they always lived with, so it wasn't interesting.

Guess what? I did the same and mine didn't touch anything. I found that interesting, but, it makes perfect sense.

Hello! Hello! Market Friday is running so late this week, I was under the weather a bit and I will be out of town for about ten days. I apologize for the delay in answering and I hope you know how much I appreciate the great participation. I will be busy while I am gone, so I put #MarketFriday on Vacation for this week and next. You are welcome to participate, a lot of people do, but, I might not be able to comment all as my time is not my own for this time. I will probably upvote all when I get the time, but, I wanted to be fair and let you know.

I try to let people know how much I appreciate their participation in #MarketFriday! Even though I get many on a weekly basis, each one is read and enjoyed. Last week, I learned about a traditional wedding ceremony that follows Jewish laws and traditions. Interestingly enough, it was not in the post but in the comments between us discussing the post. Interaction. It was written by @tali72 who is a transplant to Israel. I enjoy learning about the world and how it is to live in your corner of it, and if there are solutions to making it better in any way. I find it interesting to compare, not by the world's standards, but, by how we find the quality of our life with different indicators than the world does. It is not always about the wealth in money, sometimes money means very little when there is no value behind it. You cannot buy health although you can take care of what you have. Being educated isn't always about schooling, but acquiring knowledge and using it for the better good and happiness of the society you are living in. It is with great pleasure that I read through this and all of the posts, with these thoughts in mind.

Don't miss the small things in your life, they usually make no noise but can be indicators of bigger things. I enjoy learning more about you and hope you feel the same, that is why I find it important to take the time to read a couple of #MarketFriday posts and leave a genuine comment. It is important for a community to do this, learning about others, and getting to know each other. The fun is in getting to know people and making a positive contribution to community life. All this fun and money too. What is not to love? That is one of the reasons I joined Hive. How about you? :) I leave you with the guidelines. I hope you are having an amazing week!

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how:

Rules of the Road to Join #MarketFriday!

  1. Go to the market, or anywhere that you pay money for a service. It can be a movie, an auction, or even a museum. Wherever money is exchanged for a service or product.
    Take pictures! Be creative!
  2. Tell us a little bit about the market or the event. What brought you there? What did you buy? How much did it cost? Was it expensive? Did it go up or down? A scroll of pictures with few words doesn't usually work.
  3. Post the pictures. Of course, you should tell a little bit about the ones you post, it is too difficult to guess about some.
  4. Use the MarketFriday Community Platform to post (#hive-196308) This is not required but appreciated.
PLEASE Drop the link into the MarketFriday comment section so I can find it!!
  5. Following me and reblogging the post would be appreciated, but not a rule, more vision for more views on the #MarketFriday posts!
    7. You must put #MarketFriday by @dswigle somewhere on your post.

As always, please remember! #MarketFriday loves you!
