Just Sell Our Bitcoin

I know it seems a little dramatic but my wife and I were talking finances a little bit the other day and one of the things that came up was our cryptocurrency holdings, mainly the big ones like Bitcoin, and what she was thinking we should do with those.

I know that financial matters are a bit of a sticky point with some and it's a little complicated in many situations. Ours is what I think would be a little more straight forward but I wonder if that is because we don't struggle financially and that makes it a little less stressful than if we were financially struggling.

I think it's pretty good to have these types of conversations though because it's important to be open about them so that you don't get into a situation where things go sideways financially and someone ends up getting hurt because of that, emotionally or physically. My wife and I have been pretty good at being open about our finances, where we share all of our money instead of having everything separate. With married couples having everything separate, I think that's such a strange behavior and unnecessary strain on a relationship. We know a few people where that is the case and I can't figure it out mentally lol.

One of the things, which I can't blame her, my wife asked me the other day is what our crypto portfolio is valued at. I knew it off hand but in the terms of the quantity of the tokens but not necessarily the dollar values of the portfolio. I think that's the mindset of those of us in the crypto realm for the long-term success of the ecosystem, we are looking at the numerical value of our holdings and not the dollar values. I know that we have "X" amount of Bitcoin but I didn't know the dollar value off hand. I had told her the dollar value at the height of the value of it, when it was 60k Bitcoin market price and she was ecstatic to hear of course but when she was asking about it today, I knew she wasn't going to be as thrilled with that number lol.

She's of the old financial mindset, largely because she doesn't do much in the crypto realm herself and doesn't read the different things that I am. Granted I'm not a guru by any means and I know dozens of people here that are far smarter than I am but I would like to think that I've been in the space long enough to know my way around and know what to look for and what to avoid. What I'm trying to avoid at all costs though is to sell any of the bitcoin that we accumulated.

I've been playing around a little bit with market orders, setting buys and sells so that I can try to take advantage of the market a little bit but at the same time, I have been trying to save and extract the Bitcoin itself off the centralized exchanges and put it into my hardware wallet for safe keeping. With that though, I haven't even considered selling the larger portion of our portfolio because it's not really an option for me. To me, it's not just the numerical value of the asset but what it represents for us and that is the financial freedom and antithesis to the fiat currency system. Being able to choose where to spend my tokens and largely have nobody tell me that I can or cannot do it, is important.

We are trying to buy a house, not very successfully sadly, and one of the things that we've been doing is taking a hard look at the things we are spending money on, where we are saving and all that to try and figure out where we can save a little bit more and what we can do to sell things and make some extra money in order to put more money into the house that we are eventually going to get. At the same time we don't need to do some of these things but it would make the financial cost of it less impactful if we are able to do that. She was thinking that Bitcoin was on the table and I refrained myself from freaking out and smacking my head into a wall not really, just wanted to convey gently that it was NOT HAPPENING lol.. I thankfully was able to gently say that we would not be selling our bitcoin because it was a very bad idea at this time. She didn't pursue it thankfully but I was flabbergasted at the notion of selling my precious bitcoin! Lol.

Pump the brakes on that request to sell!!

I don't mind waiting for the price of Ethereum to get up there so I can unload that pile of horse shit but I will most definitely not be selling any of my bitcoin in the near future! I will be clutching onto that as a 90 year old man, telling my great grandkids the fact that bitcoin was created when I was in my early adult years and that I was able to get my hands on some of it and kept it like a pirates treasure, to be buried with me and nobody will ever know of its existence!

I ain't selling that shit!

TEll me when you sell ETH and I'll sell mine...

I wish I"d sold my BTC on the up when it was at 60k. I did sell half though and paid off the rest of my mortgage, which wasn't a lot at time but enough to make things a bit sweeter for us now that inflation is killing us all.

Hahah I am hoping for Eth to go up a bit more before I sell it but even if I sell it now I'm at a good profit so I don't mind.

That's an awesome story with your bitcoin! I really love hearing those type of stories and I'm hoping that one day I could tell a type of story like that but in the meantime I'm hoarding all the stuff I can get :D

Does she pay attention to fiat financial news? You can explain to her it would be like having a 401(k) in 2008 and selling after the market crashed. ;)

I wish you luck in buying a house!

Thanks that’s a good analogy and could help me get her to understand the implications of selling it now!

I suppose the question is, if you have it, and don't sell it, what's the point of acquiring it in the first place? I'm quite ignorant about most things crypto as well, to be super honest, but I think I might tend to agree with your wife on this. I'm absolutely all open to being told better though. :)

It’s like a stock to me, I am keeping it for the future and will want to make it so that it gives me income rather than withdrawals only. We could certainly sell it now but I don’t think that’s a good option. Even still though, we are in the green with it overall so if forced to we would still make money but I want to have it make even more money lol
