Human Versus AI Content

Hi fellow Ranters,

Today I wanted to chat a bit about the direction a lot of content will go and how I won't do it myself!

Human Versus AI Content

Today I wanted to talk about something that I think is going to be increasingly prevalent online, most likely significantly so here on Hive: AI generated content!

We are going into uncharted territory, as we often are with each generation doing things that the previous generation never thought possible. One of those things that's going to be happening over the coming years is the widespread prevalence of AI generated content. I don't specifically disagree with the content however there is going to be a lot of people who are going to try it out and use it in various ways. It's already started with images which really started to boom this year. I never saw AI generated images before but about 6 months ago there were a few AI bots that popped up that started to generate some artwork and I've already seen quite a few people post those types of images here on Hive.

The content I am referring to here is written content. I don't think I will use the AI generated image content since I have a lot of fun taking photographs with my phone or digital camera but I don't think I will rule it out entirely because I think that it could have it's purpose for something that I am trying to convey but might not have a specific image for it. I think it could be quite helpful potentially when you are writing about a topic and want an image to be generated to bring forth your views but in an artistic way. That I think one day I might mess around with.

What I don't plan on doing myself though, for now or the foreseeable future, is allow an AI algorithm to write posts for me for Hive.

I know that some will embrace it and likely use AI generated content for some parts of their blog posts which will most likely turn out to be all of their posts at one point or another. That is what I have an issue with personally. I don't mind if an AI algorithm draws or crafts an image for me that's got some points that I've asked it to since that is not where I am drawing my line, but writing content is.

I think one of the important things about being human and where we are at right now in civilization is that we need to embrace and keep our human nature and elements for as long as we can. I think eventually my grand children won't have that option for one reason or another and I think that's going down a very dangerous slope that is full of pitfalls. Not to digress on that avenue of it though, but back to the topic at hand.

I was chewing on this the other day and then I decided that I was going to make a commitment to myself. I updated my signature to reflect that my written content in the past and the entire foreseeable future is going to be human generated, nothing AI generated!

Some might think this is foolish or a waste of time but I think I want to make that part of my brand here on Hive. I've got content that is very wide ranging and covers lots of areas that's for sure but one of the things that I want to focus on is that it will all be written by me and my old-fashioned brain!

You?

What about you? Do you plan on dabbling with AI generated written content for your blog posts? Why or why not would be an interesting discussion!

You are right. Expressing ourselves in writing is one that makes us human, and I don't want to let go of that. Also, writing makes me feel alive so I guess if I let AI do it for me, I'd die figuratively or a part of will die, and that scares me. AI generated is not for me too.

It’s good that the people who have been here on hive are mostly in agreement that we want to put out human content! Everyone in the comments of this one have certainly gone with that notion.

I agree that it makes us feel more human to be able to write the things down that are floating around in our old brains! If we let a computer do it then we lose a piece of our humanity I think for sure.

I'm not posting for the sake of posting. I have specific ideas I want to communicate, or real-life activities I want to share. I see no use for AI content generation.

Yeah for sure man me too! I enjoy the catharsis of writing and sharing the things that I’ve seen or thought about. Getting a computer to give me some thoughts is losing a piece of my humanity and we know that we are losing those in increasing numbers so certainly trying to keep what we can!

It seems everyone that’s commented agrees on this so far which is good. I think people will start a wave of signatures specifying human content. They could lie of course but if caught.. the blacklist might be fierce lol

If I ever do post any AI content, it will include my own commentary poking fun at it.

Hive is proof of brain. Not proof of silicon.

I have played around a bit with this new GPT thingy on open AI and I must say it is fascinating. Based on his prompt, I got it to write a bedtime story for my son. It was interesting to see his story come alive. Minds were blown.

As far as content goes I think it should be labelled as such and I hope curators will be able to discern the genuine human-toiled content from the pulp bits on bytes. I am not against it as a tool and one that I may play with more but I will for sure be open about using it to create.

I have also been thinking about updating my sig with 100% organic content and I believe there will have to be a community-wide discussion on how we deal with this sort of content.

It’s good to see that most people agree with us that hive is and should be human generated content! I laughed a little bit at proof of silicon, that’s quite right.

I don’t want to try any of it really. I don’t want to feed the beast so to speak on what I am going to ask it to do for me and add to its machine learning or algorithms. One day I may but that’s a really long ways away. I certainly don’t want to try it with my son, he’s old enough that he will probably like it then ask for it again and I will die a little bit inside lol.

Yeah I don’t envy the job of curators of the big accounts lol. Some don’t care but others are passionate that the content they highlight is good so if they find out someone is all AI generated I think they will be pretty upset with that.

I think more of us will need to update our signatures with it!

Unfortunately, it is a future we will have to get used to. I try to stay informed of what's going on and I do find it interesting. With that said I can see the AI style, in visuals especially and shy away from voting for that sort of work especially if they don't mention how it was created.

It's funny but I thought the arts would have nothing to fear from AI for many papers to come but now I see that it is one of the first types of work to be challenged.

I think AI generated content should be banned on Hive and other writing sites. Ugh the world we live in is getting lazier and lazier.

Yeah people are absolutely getting lazy! It’s a real shame because I feel like writing and expressing my thoughts, interests and other things via writing posts is part of my humanity. I don’t want to lose any more of my humanity!

As far as the content being banned here, I don’t really agree with that. It should be directed to a community that wants to partake in it but it should be clearly labeled that it is AI generated content and not human. I think most curation groups will not curate the posts. In the beginning they might do a few here and there but I think the way we can keep it in check is to not curate and reward the posts that use it.

We need free choices and limits to what is considered banned. AI has its place but don’t expect any rewards on it from me that’s for sure! I won’t vote on it and if I see someone I routinely vote on using it, I think I would stop voting on their stuff for a while.

(Edited)

Let me rephrase banned, not upvoted. It's like cheating if it gets upvoted big time. No effort on their part and yet they will get crypto for it? Why if that's gonna happen then I won't even bother creating my own content too. 😂

So much effort and most of the time not much upvotes and then AI generated content will get upvoted by the whales/big curators? Hahaha. That is just a big no for me.
