Forested Wednesday Hike
Hi fellow Hiveians,
Today I wanted to share some photos from a recent hike that the little man and I went on!
Forested Wednesday Hike
The autumn is one of my favorite times in the New England area. It's got so many things to do because in the summertime, it's a lot of spending time on the lakes, rivers and in the ocean. The autumn time though, that's the time to go out and do some hiking and exploring!
The little man, as sad as it is, is getting older and with that comes some added benefits. One of the good benefits in that realm is that he's able to do some more rigorous hikes than he was able to just a few months or a year ago! I've been challenging him to go on more challenging hikes or longer ones and he's stepped up to the challenge quite well! We have to make sure that we have adequate supplies though, as he does get a little hangry or thirsty if we don't! Lol.
The region we went hiking is one that we've never been to before and I've been enjoying that, getting out and exploring some new spots. I think one of these days I'm going to bring him back to a spot that I am intimately familiar with as I hiked it so often as a kid, since it was within walking distance, that I think will be a fun time to share with him.
In the meantime though, we've been checking out things that are pretty close to us like this spot. This spot is one that we've driven by but we haven't stopped in to check it out until one day I knew that we were going to go for a hike so I opted to give it a whirl. It didn't disappoint that's for sure! It had all kinds of cool stuff like this old steam bucket excavator from the early 1900's which was an epic find. I wasn't expecting to see anything cool like this until we checked out the map at the trail head and I was like "hmm, what do they mean steam bucket??" and we found out! The little man enjoyed this thing quite a bit, as he got to climb on it and even stole the DSLR camera and snapped a few photos here and there. He's got some decent photography skills let me tell you!
What was also cool with the hike is that we came across quite a few wild things in the ground. There were a few things that we identified last year that I don't know exactly the name of it but I think this one here is known as wood sorrel. Apparently, looking it up online, it's edible and used in many European countries in soups and salads of various kinds. I wouldn't mind giving this a whirl one day, honestly! I love finding these types of things when we are out and about in the wild, and know that they are edible. I will certainly be referring to a guide or two when the first times that I go to partake in that activity but it's on the list of things to try.
Believe it or not but this photo right here was taken by none other than the little man! He's been a little jealous of me having the DSLR around my neck when he can't have one for himself but I do let him take it for a few photos before I take it back.
He's almost at the point where I would let him take the camera around his neck while we are hiking but he's still a little careless and knocking the camera around all kinds of ways when we're out so I don't give him the opportunity to break the thing lol. He still takes some great photos though! I tell him a little bit about the type of frame that I'm looking to capture and he goes about trying to get into a good pose and all that for a nice photo and ends up taking a few decent ones which is cool!
What was kind of funny about the hike is one of the main purposes of us going on the hike is so that we could try and get some decent foliage pictures! We ended up not getting much foliage at all lol we were a little too early when we took these but I think the time I'm typing this, should likely be a decent opportunity to get some photos. What's been funny is the first year we took foliage pictures we were spot on for the timing then the last two years we were either too early or too late by the time we got to take them. How annoying! Lol but we still got a few that were worth keeping so that was good.
I think in the end we ended up doing around 14,000 steps on this hike which is really good! The more I take him out the stronger his little legs get and I'm able to take him out for further hikes. I think when he eventually gets to the point where he wants to do a serious hike I will definitely have to pack a backpack and some gear to bring with us, so that we are prepared for anything that could arise when we are out there. I'm looking forward to that day but I'm also not looking forward to it, because that means he's getting too old! LOL

No bigfoot sightings?? and, it sounds like you earned a beer after all those steps!
No bigfoot yet but we are keeping our eyes out for the fella! Lol.
Man I haven't had a beer in a really long time! I need to get on that but likely after the holidays lol. I've already eaten more candy in the past 48 hours than I have all year! I don't need to put on a few more holiday pounds hahaha
He is doing great on your adventures. Wonderful to read.
Such a beautiful area… the changes for autumn. The finds in the forest. 😊😎
Thanks for sharing @cmplxty 😎 enjoy your evening!
Thanks! It's a beautiful area indeed, lots of places to explore and we don't even travel incredibly far which is nice.
You are welcome, that’s a great bonus when a lot of cool places are relative close by.
Have a nice Thursday 👋🏻😊
I felt thrilled as I look at every photo. Walking in the forest is such an amazing view my friend, and surely it healed you from a bustling atmosphere. And those maple trees, I so love. There is no autumn here on my side but I always wish to experience fall, but eternal summer would always be great literally and figuratively. What a great Wednesday walk you had. Have a nice time and take care.
Thanks! It's a beautiful place indeed and we are enjoying the times that we spend in the areas for sure. We may not live here for a whole lot longer, with moving further away being an option we are exploring but we are taking it all in as we can. It's certainly got it's benefits as well as drawbacks, we could appreciate a place that's warm a lot longer during the year but life will tell us what we are doing next we think, without us having to go too crazy trying to figure it out!
It’s my pleasure dear friend. What a great share for today as just like you I always wanted to be close to the wild heart of nature. More breathtaking places like this to explore and have safe travels my friend. I hope you are doing well today. Have a nice time and take care.
Thank you!
😂 that seems to be every parents fear when their kids grow up.
Haha yeah for sure! He’s such a good kid right now and hope he stays that way lol but growing up is one of those things I want to slow down. Can’t I know but I’m at least cherishing these moments one day at a time!
so great the little one enjoys getting out on adventures with you
Thanks for joining the Wednesday Walk
Thanks jay! Hope your wife is doing better man! I’ll check your recent posts to see what’s going on!
He sure does have some great photography skills, that shot of his is wonderful and I'm so glad that you included it. Pity that the leaves weren't out in full display yet but it gives me something to look forward to in the future. 14000 steps is admirable for a child, good on you for the encouragement and for taking snacks, rule number one of hiking with children - never forget the snacks.
Thanks! He's got an eye for it for sure, I like to foster what things in him that I can so that he's got different things he can do or enjoy when he gets older that isn't glued to a tablet or something lol.
I know, it was 14,000 steps for me, it was likely 18 or 20 for him and his smaller legs!
It's a great way to give him an appreciation for the outdoors and making it memorable and challenging goes a long way towards that (also snacks help), I think that each of us can remember outings into nature with our parents or peers that stood out as fun and that's what we need to get this next generation to appreciate or they will be missing out on so much good stuff. It's easy when they are small. Teenagers though? Well that's a tougher kettle of fish.

That’s great thanks!
What a beautiful forest I can imagine the amount of surprises that can be found. You know it must be great in that forest to lie on the grass and look at the tops of the pines and all the natural landscape at the sight of nature, many years ago I had that experience in the black forest in Germany I went to visit a sister who lived in Dusseldorf.
It is a great experience that fills you with a great calm and spiritual peace
Thank you for sharing such a beautiful forest in autumn
I haven’t laid on my back on the forest floor since I was a kid. I think I’m gonna have to do that now! I love looking up to the tops of these giant trees, there’s certain areas that have massive pine trees and I love to see those.
Do it, it will be an experience lived and well kept in your soul, you will feel the magic you have in your heart and I assure you that when you do it, the wish you make while breathing will come true.💜
