First Canoeing

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to enjoy the recent experience I had with the little man recently on a vacation: canoeing!

First Canoeing

Maine has got to be one of our favorite places to go to. I always loved it as a kid when I was lucky enough to go there every summer a few times a summer. Some people have never been able to visit Maine or people couldn't afford it among other things. I know that I and many other people have grown over the years to appreciate the small things in life. The laid back vibe and slowed down nature of Maine is one of the reasons I love it so much. There is so much wildlife and beauty all around you! It's insane!

On our recent vacation where my wife found this amazing hotel, they had all kinds of great outdoor amenities for us to do. There was swimming, canoeing, kayaking, fire pits, swings, and all kinds of other fun stuff for kids and families. We are going to see if we can make sure to go back next year for sure! I was excited to get out on the water with the little man!

He was excited to be out on the boat that's for sure but he was also a little nervous. He's never been on a canoe before, but he has been on a boat a few times. A boat with a motor though lol. I suppose this one did have a motor as well, just a little bit slower! (dads arms hahaha)

He was having a lot of fun helping me row the boat with the oar that he got. They had kid sized oars which was awesome as well, so it fit right in with him! We went up and down the coastline surrounding the resort and I don't know if he had more fun than I did. I was so excited and happy to sit there on the canoe and share that great father-son bonding time. I know I really loved the times that I got to be with my dad out on the boat instead of walking around. There's nothing to do besides row, fish, talk about things and appreciate the beautiful scenery around you.

One of the things that was a bit wild about this place that I am not really sure why it was the case but there were a gazillion of these weird bugs floating around on the surface of the water when you got a little bit offshore. They were everywhere! Lol. The bugs didn't stop the beauty of being out on the water like this though. We went out first thing in the morning, I think this was around 6 AM that we were out there and it was such a beautiful time. Little bit of overcast clouds but the temperature was perfect and we got to sit there in the quiet and listen to the water, nature and all that.

I know that I'm incredibly lucky to have been able to go on this vacation here, I've been looking forward to taking a trip like this for some time because of the beauty that you can see all around you but also to slow down a bit. It's crazy to me that this vacation was a couple weeks ago now as I'm typing this and it's already August. Life is moving incredibly fast and that's not always a good thing! There are certain events we all look forward to that's for sure but I also am trying to slow down as much as I can so I can savor the times like this where I'm with the little man (and my wife of course! she just wasn't interested at all on being in a canoe lol) and get to help show him the beauty of the world and mold the impression he has of it. I know the world is ugly and there are a lot of issues to it but I think helping to keep the youngest generation as pure as we can as long as we can, so that they can take in these beauties and appreciate so much without being tainted by the bullshit that we as adults know life is trying to expose to them, the better they can be in the long run I think. I'll get off my soap box now :D

Thank you! It was a lot of fun to get out there and explore these places with him. My favorite thing to do is spend time with him and my wife! I'm giving up more dedication to my career for that and it's the best tradeoff I've ever had!

I agree about showing kids the simple beauty life can offer. They need balance and they will get all of the other shit as they go along. The things that are important to me now were not important as a kid but I cherish the memories of me learning these things more than anything else. Learning to hunt and fish, canoeing, foraging for wild foods, gardening for not so wild foods, sitting and watching a doe teach her fawn to drink from a pond. Those are the things that I understand as life now and I wish I appreciated them more as a young boy.

Fun fact: That Old Town Tripper in your second photo is the canoe I almost died in that I spoke about in my video that you commented on. I bought it second-hand from the widow of a man who bought it to bond with his son because the kid didn't like anything but video games and after he passed she kept the canoe in the barn for so many years I couldn't quite get a shine on it because of the dust and pigeon turds. I paid $750 for it and lost it on the second voyage. I hope it made it to the Northwest Territories and some kid found it because that was where I wanted to take it and if a kid found a canoe that beautiful, they would surely use it.

Yeah I hear you for sure man! I was a bit of a strange blend as a kid, played a lot of video games but also was outside a lot compared to some of my other friends! We were really lucky and that we had a large forest near my parents house so I was always out there exploring, messing around and just going for some nice hikes. Some of my best exploration memories are out there doing that stuff! I want to share that for sure with my son, he's got an incredible adventure spirit which I love. He's always down for some type of outdoor adventure so I've got a little partner for the stuff that's for sure! One thing I don't know a whole lot about is wild edibles. I want to grab a book on them for the local area we live in. We've looked up some of the plants around us and have gotten familiar with some names that aren't exactly household names like Catalpa trees among others. Next is to figure out besides Plantain, what is around us that we can eat! Lol

I think next on our list at some point this fall is going to be camping. I've never put up a tent before lol so it will be a fun experience! We have a family members house that we can go to with a yard that's right on a lake. It's perfect and one of the ideal spots to do a first camp, safe and pretty controlled.

Ah the canoe was a decent one. I've only been on a canoe a couple times, we had an aluminum boat when I was a kid so that's what we would use but I went out on a canoe on a river a couple times. It was a lot of fun for sure but it does get a little dangerous at some points! There was this guy on a boat who was clearly an asshole. He saw us, waved to us but then proceeded to make giant fucking waves and almost knocked the canoe over! I was scared as shit, we had our life jackets on which was good but I didn't want to dump all my shit in the lake lol

Where I grew up was pretty amazing. A little over an hour from Toronto but no cable, cell phones, etc. We were completely surrounded by nature, creeks and lakes full of fsh, woods full of wild foods. Where you are, it is a treasure trove of wild foods. There's a guy from New York named Steve "Wildman" Brill that has an excellent book and there would be a lot of the same foods you would have there. You probably have fiddleheads, morels, puffballs and literally hundreds of other foods growing there.

We used to have assholes like that on our lake and they thought it was great fun to swamp canoes. We got them once though. I saw the police launching their boat and I asked them to wait and watch us when we went into the bay. The law is that smaller craft always have the right of way so I knew those kids, well they were older than I was but probably 18-19 at the time, would be coming right over when they saw us in the canoe. Within 20 minutes they were doing circles around us and before we got swamped, the cops came flying over and got them for not only trying to capsize us but they had weed, booze and fireworks in the boat, which were all illegal and then the guy driving got an impaired. It was pretty sweet justice because they had flipped us over probably ten times over the two summers.

That looks like a place I'd love to visit. It's been a long time since I have been even close to anything like that.
