Changing Your Name
Hi fellow Hiveians,
Today I wanted to ponder if perhaps we would change the username we associate with Hive.
Changing Your Name
Have you ever wondered, months or years after being on Hive, if you could do it again, you would go back and pick a different username? Or a better username? That's something I was thinking about the other day!
I'm certainly not one to judge but I've seen some interesting names that are on here, ones that I wonder if people would rather change instead of keep.. @depressedfuckup I'm looking at you bro! LOL with love though :D
I was thinking the other day that if I could, I would change my username. The one I've got is unique and kind of cool, but would I have chosen something different when I went to sign up? Most likely. I don't know specifically what I would choose but I kind of wish I had given it more thought and not used this handle. It's nothing scary, dangerous or something but I think that now I would put a little more thought into the one that I choose.
With the digital platforms incorporating digital assets more and more in the future where cryptocurrency increases, potentially exponentially, it comes to bear that platforms like Hive where you have a legible username are going to become increasingly popular. The bitcoin hashes are one thing but they are nearly impossible for the average person to remember. A nice and simple username is the way to go, and we are definitely paving the way forward on that front.
With that thought, it then comes to mind that one day potentially being able to link our physical personality to this digital one in more than just posting a few pictures. What if I started an online business, and this was my avenue to plug my stuff? Going around with business cards and stuff. Yeah the name is unique and maybe a little cool to say or remember but at the same time, it's not really something I would want to say is professional. Am I too oldschool in that way? I guess so..
I don't think I would change my username to hockeyfan420 or something stupid lol but I've got some thoughts as to the more professional side that would be interesting. I won't be adding any examples here because I try to maintain that professional side enough apart from this one that gives me a tiny bit of privacy.. but inferences can be made!
I'm also not really a big fan of putting your name on it, as that introduces some other issues that can get a little thorny. I don't mind people who do put their name on it as that is their choice, but even on my other "social" accounts, I rarely put my real name and try to add a little bit of salt to the mix and throw something kind of close or some random stuff together. McLovin would have been a cool one, but that one is overplayed.
If you could pay 100, 500 Hive or something like that, would you pay to change your account name to associate it with something else? Why or why not? Let me know in the comments!

nice view. good afternoon my brother.
That's great thank you!
That is a cool idea, but I do think the safety concern, as some people can use that idea to become an imposter, or try to spread scam over and over with different username. Although I believe that the downvote system that we have, might overcome that issue, but at the first place some people might fall as a victim.
But I personally don't really want to change my username. : )
wanted to be known all across platform with the same username. : )
Haha yeah it's funny someone actually made an account and copied my picture and everything trying to make an imposter of me! I felt honored someone wanted to actually do that for little old me lol. There's a lot more downside to it but it's still a fun discussion to think about!
Introduce a system like Steam have.
On Steam, you can see people previous usernames. I think its the last 10 on steam, but there since its the blockchain, we can do more than 10.
Buuuut, its a problem when it comes to scammers if they can change it too often :D
100 Hive is acceptable to change, 500 Hive might be a bit too much :D
Yeah I think having it tracked is a good way to go about it, similar to how you have the post versions of someone edits.
Scammers would definitely take advantage of it which is why I don't think it will go anywhere but it's fun to toss the idea around.
Ye exactly!
And Scammers would definitely take advantage of it xD
You could always change your username to qwerty ;<)
I remember picking a random Dutch looking name from Google, 7 years ago. I never looked back.
Haha yeah, I think I like to use random generators for some things now and it works out well enough! On things I don't care about I've come up with some funny and unique ones.
I was kidding about my name. Some days I wished I hadn't used my real life name here but I have. I guess I'm one of the exceptions.
Hahah I didn’t know if you were or not but I get it. Perhaps you’re better suited for the long run than I with that? That’s a possibility!
Who knows? Time will tell ;<)
There was a time when I was thinking of changing my username but it wasn’t really needed or important anymore
Rafzat is the name of my parents and I mostly use that name for so many reasonable things so I’m good with it
Yeah I've toyed with the idea here and there but figured it's too late now at this point. Just a fun discussion!
It's good and nice idea but I don't think I will change mine because people knows about this now and I already built a decent amount of friends who knows me by this username, I don't want to confuse them 😀
Haha yeah that's definitely a good point! People will forget or simply not realize the change!
You're right, I don't like I even like the idea of the username of a person being unchangeable, I know that there are people that could pay to change their username, but I think some people might also want to use it to abuse the system especially spammers who want to continue spamming, but it's going to be a good addiction.
My username is somewhat perfect and I don't think I'd change it for anything
Well I think that it would make sense to have the audit functionality included as part of it. Similar to how you can see versions of a post that were edited, you can see versions of a username. Granted the ultimate way to do it would be to just create a new account lol
I was just toying with the idea, thinking in 10 years will I want my name to be associated to this? Maybe, maybe not!
I wouldn't change my username on Hive - quite happy with it and still happy with it! :)
Haha yeah, I am torn, i wouldn't mind changing mine but at the same time it's unique and decent. Who knows, just spitballing!
Hehe I see!
It's interesting you brought this up and I think I blogged about it quite a while ago. I signed up to Hive's predecessor fully expecting that I'd be able to change my name at a later state just like you can with almost any other platform. Well, with Hive you cannot, you're stuck. But you know what? I am actually happy with my name and have now incorporated it elsewhere 😊
Haha yeah I think I did the same! I was expecting to be able to change it but it has stuck, oh well. I've used this name in the past but for video games. I haven't really signed up for other things with it but having consistency does help!
