I think coffee cannot make me feel alert and stay focused. Maybe it is better to say that thinking about an upcoming coffee can make me more focussed in my tasks in order to reach the moment faster. 😁

I have understood something for me in the last few years. The thing that can keep me alert and awake is only the busy schedule and self motivation to finish everything in time. Three kids and three jobs means quite limited time to think and do about something aside. And when I am not in a hurry and start going in a slower pace… that’s when the exhaustion kicks in and I start to feel extremely sleepy.

Of course, good coffee is a great companion during this whole process!

I perfectly understand your motivation πŸ˜‚--mine is similar (Sad but True (a statement & an intelligent answer inherited from the Heavy Metal of the 90's, which we can easily call one of the philosophies of the end of the century).

BUT my only child, my boy, is already a young man. I couldn't tell if I need coffee to focus; I'm still thinking about it, but what you say makes sense to me!

You are absolutely right, responsibilities and obligations keep us alert, they can even steal our sleep. Coffee doesn't have that effect on me either.

Answering this question to start our conversation #60:

Some people drink coffee to stay awake and feel more alert, is there a more effective method to increase concentration?

In my college days, if I used to use it to stay awake and alert, because there were many exams in one day and it required a lot of concentration, I did it with many cups of coffee.
IMG_20240226_090716_1.jpg

Nowadays, I take it as a stimulant in the morning to give me the necessary energy to activate me in my daily chores, if I don't have coffee, for one reason or another, I take a cold shower and I am completely active, but I prefer coffee πŸ˜…β˜•β˜•β˜•β˜•β˜•

I cannot remember the coffee during my college days. It seems like I didn’t make any, or consume. I remember I had instant coffee to mix with my protein shakes, but this was only to focus on my fitness activities 😁

Yes, that rest was what there was, for a girl with limited resources. This is the cheapest thing to keep me awake πŸ€πŸ˜…

Oh, college days... so much youth and coffee, haha. I was an addict; I had my coffee with Coca-Cola for extra energy when I had to stay up late finishing some paper. I never had coffee while I was studying for my classes and tests though, as I did this in the library, and they wouldn't allow you to eat or drink anything there.

I also prefer hot coffee to a cold shower, but I ususally have both: first, coffee; then, cold shower 😁

A lot of accumulated youth+coffee hahaha, I never tried coffee with Coca-Cola, I did in the early mornings it was my companion drink, a lot of sleep lost thanks to my coffee 🀭😁.
The combination of both coffee+cold shower is comforting, I've tried it too πŸ˜…, of course after resting the hot of the coffee🀭, we still active with our coffee β˜•β˜•β˜•β˜•πŸ˜.

My grandmother on my father's side used to get so mad because I had my steaming coffee and then went straight to bathe in the river; I remember her saying I was going to get cramped up and die stiff! Haha. They call it 'pasmo' (solecism for 'espasmo', spasm in English); you were supposed to get it if you took a shower or bathed immediately after drinking or eating something hot or exercising. She was really mortified, but I listened to my mother better.

Here we also have that belief, if we bathed after drinking or eating something hot, we should rest for at least half an hour, that's how I grew up with that belief and I maintain it πŸ€πŸ˜…

Totally. When I was a child, I was superstitious and really gullible, but my mother corrected me at every step; maybe that's why today, sometimes I don't believe in what I see with my own eyes 🀭

I also prefer coffee in the morning, it helps me to wake up haha. It reminds me of what you said about exams to my husband, he also drank a lot of coffee during his exams as he tells me, it seems that coffee helps to have a clearer mind.

There are other ways to stay awake besides coffee, although I think coffee is one of my favourites, I guess it's because it's the healthiest way to stay alert haha.

For me coffee helps me feel better, less tired, sometimes I'm a bit down and coffee gives me energy.

I haven't tried staying up all night just drinking coffee but my husband has done it when he was at university and had to study for an exam. So, coffee is also very effective in keeping us alert. In fact that is one of its properties, it is an excellent stimulant.

When I was in college, I used to have a lot of coffee to stay awake at night. It doesn't work anymore; if my brain wants to sleep, it does! Haha. I remember I used to mix it with Coca-Cola if I wanted an extra boost, and sometimes, I added one "Coricidin" pill if my head hurt; I can't tell if that mix would work for me now. I've gone from night owl to early bird; I like my nights to sleep and my mornings for coffee β˜•πŸ˜

Coffee with coke?! it's the first time I've heard that mixture, I imagine that after that you spent the night without sleeping haha, I should try it someday. For me, coffee at night does keep me awake, that's why I avoid drinking it at night.

It was a crazy thing a friend recommended, and it worked every time. Another weird trick was a beer with orange juice + 20 minutes of sleep to stop a migraine. It worked every time; I had plenty of those. Not anymore, fortunately.

Hello all coffee lovers! πŸ˜ƒ What a joy to meet again to be able to talk about a topic that fascinates us πŸ˜‰

Coffee, for me, is a driving force and a way to lift my spirits. I always have a cup of coffee in the morning and if I feel discouraged in the afternoon, I know that a cup of coffee can help me.

Of course, there are times when the thoughts are too many or are swarming through my head and in order to maintain focus, I usually stop, make coffee, and review what needs to be done on my to-do list. This way, I can decide what to focus on depending on my mood.

But in the moments when I don't have anything specific I want to do, to regain concentration, I usually listen to music. Watching my favorite music videos helps my thoughts move with the songs and usually returns stability to me.

Another activity that helps me is writing, although when my thoughts are very jumbled, the words get mixed up... so I prefer drawing. Drawing relaxes if you let yourself be carried away by your strokes and by the moment, loving the drawing as it turns out in the end.

These activities make time fly by and make my mind focus again and if they are accompanied by a cup of coffee, they will be more special. I hope to learn to embroider too, so I can add this concentration activity to my list 😊

Happy Sunday to all! πŸ’š

That's right, although sometimes there is not enough time to do everything I would like πŸ˜… But I discovered that by doing the activities that I like, I tend to be more focused on other things, in addition to developing a little patience 😊 Thank you for giving me your opinion. Nice drawing πŸ’• Drawing is Zen for me; I love it, even if I don't have your ability 😹

When it comes to music, watching videos will get me daydreaming in a second. It's a strong distraction in my case, but listening to specific music, ah, that's different.

Hehehe yes, it is a coloring book that has very cute figures. I draw digitally but painting traditionally is relaxing. You might be encouraged to get one of these books, so you can get your hand used to making strokes and then you can venture out to make your own drawings 😊

I always say that I live thanks to coffee and music. Coffee comforts me and reminds me of the warmth of life, while music helps me maintain a rhythm in everything I do, because I cannot do my activities without my favorite music πŸ€£πŸ’š

Hey, coffee friends! I hope you've had a relaxing Sunday 😁

Drinking coffee is definitely one of my favorite things in the world, but it's not my best hack when I want to stay awake, focused, and/or alert.

IMG_20240331_125655.jpg

That'd be listening to music, but not the kind that makes me relaxed like jazz or classical music.

IMG_20240331_083146.jpg

If I need to finish a book or watch a film, or do anything that demands my full attention, I just avoid multitasking and go for a big cup of espresso. But if I need to finish checking papers late at night, I'd listen to songs by Coldplay, Queen, Kimbra, Bad Religion, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, Beyonce, Sean Paul, Caravan Palace, etc... songs that have touched me deeply because of their rhythm, lyrics or their funny references give me tons of energy ⚑

I suck at multitasking, I can't listen to music and read as my attention would be divided as I would be busy listening to the lyrics of the music instead of focusing on whatever I am reading or doing.

avatar

It happens to me if I am producing in oral or written form, but if I'm passive, checking papers, no problem; I remember I could play with my son when he was little while I was checking papers or revising my own texts. Anyway, multitasking is something I try to avoid most of the time in the last years, as I've learned it isn't good for my long term memory; it's better if I focus on ine single thing, but everything depends, at least in my case, if I'm procuding or receiving info. Coffee will save us all, I guess πŸ˜‚

Excellent Sunday conversation coffee lovers.

Today I come to participate in this week's conversation.

I think many of us who went through college had to stay up late doing work, so substances that help us stay awake and keep our brains working are very sought after. I remember that my classmates used energizers, I was really tempted to do so, but I didn't want that to affect my heart after a while, so I chose my great companion, coffee. I would sit in the nights when I had to stay up late, with a big pot of coffee and my favorite cup.β˜•

I have to thank my dear dark coffee because it accompanied me during many of stress and hard work. Now I only drink my coffee for pleasure and not out of necessity.πŸ˜‹

I invite you to tell us about your experiences with coffee as a work companion, especially in the nights.

Now I only drink my coffee for pleasure and not out of necessity.πŸ˜‹

That's so good! Most of the time, I do it for pleasure, but I have to admit that my morning coffee is also a necessity 😌 I need it to help me open my eyes.

I've never felt tempted to try Red Bull or anything of the sort. Just not interested. It's so good you chose coffee as your faithful companion for those trying days. College can be really challenging because we're young and want to do so many things at once.

During my time as a student (especially in college) I tried several times drinking coffee past 8:00pm to keep me awake when I needed to study late into the night. I really did it because my friends said it worked for them, but I didn't notice any unusual changes. Today I am sure that coffee does not have a strong enough effect to keep me alert, that is only caused by responsibilities or worries

To so many people coffee has always been their go-to hack for staying alert or focused whenever they need to stay up late. This hack is also used by non-coffee lovers as it is very effective. I belong to this class of people as my cup of coffee always comes through for me whenever I need to focus at night.

To another class of people, music does the work but to me, I get distracted by it instead of staying focused.

Music also distracts me, I can't study or read with music, I don't know how anyone can do it. Music is to entertain me. Coffee is undoubtedly the best option to keep me alert.
