The Witches
Happy Monday to everyone. We’re back to films that may or may not have left a mark on yours truly. I hardly remember any of the films I saw that particular year. Thankfully, I’ve had a chance, by random thought or mention, to recollect a few of these films. So, I’m glad to be able to share some of them with you. This one was a bit disturbing. Maybe more than just a little bit, but let’s go on this ride together.
The Witches (2020)
Based on the 1983 novel by Roald Dahl, this dark comedy film was released in 2020 as the second movie adaptation of the book. The first having been released in 1983. Starring renowned actors like Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer, and Chris Rock who plays the role of narrator, among others, it tells the story of a boy in the year 1968 who goes to stay with his Grandmother (Octavia Spencer) after the death of his parents in a car accident. After an encounter with a witch one day in a store, his Grandmother tells him about the existence and truth behind witches.
In a bid to protect themselves, they hide in a fancy hotel fearing the witch’s return. Unknown to them, however, it is about that time that witches from all over the world headed by the Grand High Witch (Anne Hathaway) have gathered to discuss the lethal plans they have for mankind. With an overly curious boy on the loose, what are the odds that he doesn’t catch the attention of the Grand High Witch?
I haven’t read the book that produced this film, which is something I usually do because of the depth embedded in said books. But, I just couldn’t bring myself to read it, despite the general consensus that the 2020 movie adaptation of The Witches was nearer to the actual events that happened in the book than the 1990 version.
This film is extremely weird. From beginning to end. Before this time, I thought I’d seen my share of weird films, but this was not to be because this film had me nearly traumatized simply by the sheer absurdity of it. Does that mean I didn’t enjoy it? No. I did enjoy it to no end.
But as someone who barely has tolerance for horror films, I took basic steps like making sure to watch this film in the afternoon and making sure I was surrounded by people. I also had a soft, chick flick ready at hand if things still got too weird for my liking.
This film is one that you see if you’re in the mood to be creepily amused. Anne Hathaway was the highlight of this film for me. I love a versatile actor, and I love how easily Anne embodies any role she’s given and interprets it in the most impeccable way possible. Even though I was quivering in fear at a few of the scenes she made an appearance, anyone who sees this film would testify to her role interpretation as the best part of this rather odd film production.
When it comes to ratings, The Witches was quite low. IMDB ratings giving it 3 points. However, I don’t think films like this are essentially made for awards. Just for good laughs and an occasional shudder of revulsion. The ending is equally weird and not everything you want. But at least it has come to an end. A weird one, today. Hope you enjoy!

Ohh... I watched this film about 3 years ago and genuinely enjoyed. Reading your review, I realized just how weird I am 😂. I sneaked my cousins phone to my room in the middle of the night. I just found it amusing. Not creepy or scary or anything. I liked it back then. A lot.
I remember the 1990 film, with Angela Huston. It was brilliant. I watched it as an adult and was delighted. Nobody can top Dahl for imagination. The little boy was really good, but apparently didn't grow up to have much of a career. Huston was marvelous, unforgettable. I just looked the film up on IMDB and it was nominated for a bunch of awards. Huston and the child were nominated for awards. If you haven't seen it, you don't need to "watch it in the afternoon and be surrounded by people" :) I'm easily scared and I was alright.
