Kid-Friendly Dental Care: A Gentle Approach

Hello everyone!
It's been a while since the last time I made a blog post, and guess what?
Our little one just had a dentist visit, and I wanted to fill you in on how it went.

As a parent, I've always been concerned about my children's dental health. The ten-year-old eldest child of mine experienced a terrible dental extraction from a traditional dentist years ago. This traumatic event left him scared of dental visits to the point where the word "dentist" would cause him to get restless and terrified. A few months back, when my youngest reached four, I realized we needed to try something different, maybe in the hopes that it will help with his older brother's situation as well.

The Search for the Perfect Pediatric Dentist:

After doing some research through the internet we discovered a highly recommended pediatric dental clinic nearby. But before that, I've seen multiple clinics on the net, and I always review the clients feedback first before moving on to the inquiry and booking. After reading positive reviews, the clinic had a reputation for creating a welcoming and child-friendly environment, from then I knew I had found the clinic that I was looking for. And I was not wrong, when we arrived, I was immediately impressed by the colorful waiting/play area and the friendly staff who greeted us with smiles.

A Positive First Impression:

My youngest son was surprisingly excited to visit the dentist. He loved the playful atmosphere and the friendly dental assistants who talked to him about his favorite toys and cartoons. More than the play area at the lobby, he is also excited to try the dental chair because it has a huge TV screen playing cartoons on top that is perfectly positioned for the kids to watch while lying down. When it was time for his cleaning, he jumped right into the chair without any hesitation.

Overcoming Dental Fears:

It took him a few minutes of fiddling with the remote and trying to distract himself with television before he finally settled into the dental chair. The dentist patiently explained the procedure as he relaxed.

My eldest son, on the other hand, was understandably and expectedly nervous. I already informed them about his prior traumatic experience during the booking process and profiling so the dentist was aware of his case and could gently talk to him and orient him about the process. They explained each step of the cleaning process and allowed him to ask questions. The staff was incredibly patient and supportive, creating a calm and reassuring environment. They even let him watch the procedure being done to his little brother, reassuring him that he would also receive the same gentle treatment. Me and my husband in the corner were quietly watching. We were also nervous and thinking what if my firstborn would back out at the last minute.

Tailored Treatment for Sensitive Patients:

The dentist also recognized that my eldest son was sensitive to certain sounds, such as the sound of the dental drill. And we are glad that she agreed to take a slow and gradual approach to my son's dental care, focusing on building trust and reducing anxiety. The moment my son laid down and agreed for the doctor to make the cleaning procedure, I knew he was opening up and actually giving it a chance.

A Successful Visit:

To our relief, the visit went smoothly, despite a brief challenge when my eldest son refused to use the dental suction. However, with patience and understanding, he was able to overcome this challenge. My two kids were overjoyed with the toys they had been given and smiled as they left the clinic. Our dentist gave us a comprehensive plan for our kids future dental health, which included suggestions of regular visits for regular cleaning, fluoride, and sealant applications.

As the children played, the dentist discussed her recommendations and a comprehensive plan for their dental care with us.

Finally done! We said goodbye to the friendly doctor and staff and headed out of the clinic.

Conclusion:

Our experience at the pediatric dentist was truly positive. We were delighted finding a clinic that understood and addressed our children's unique needs. I encourage parents to look for a dentist who treats young patients if their kids are anxious about seeing the dentist. Our recent dental visit taught us, how crucial it is to be honest and open with our children's doctors and to listen to their concerns. Even the most anxious child can start to enjoy going to the dentist with the correct method. Remember, that the general health and the oral health of our children are equally important.

Thank you for reading, and see you on my next one!

I'm glad that it went smoothly. Now, it won't take a lot of convincing for their next visit. They were actually looking forward to it, especially my toddler. Thanks for reading! ☺️
