Environmental Justice : Key issues in Environmental Justice || cleanplanet activity 15-02-2025

Good evening "planet protectors" , welcome to another exciting edition of my post, having introduced to us what environmental Justice is all about in my previous post, today I will be talking about the key issues in this environmental Justice.

• Unequal Exposure to Pollution :

As can be seen, industrial facilities , highways, and landfills are mostly located near communities that are said to be marginalized, this makes them very likely to be victim of both air and water polution.

Based on the results that was gotten from previous studies, it can be seen that respiratory diseases like asthma are mostly a direct result bof poor air quality, these respiratory diseases is common within the minority and low income populations.

• Water and Sanitation Inequality:

Cases like this is also mostly common in marginalized community, when proper infrastructure is neglected in this region , it will create a health impacts that will be very devastating.

I am from Nigeria which is an oil producing country , but the regions where this oil is being drilled is located in the rural areas and suffer a lot from water contamination.

• Climate Change Vulnerability:

In as much as climate change occurs almost all the places, but the vulnerability differs and is much worse in rural areas.

This is because the rural areas don't have the needed resources to prepare fully or recover from some of this climate related diseasters such as floods, hurricanes .

• Displacement and Land Grabbing :

Some large scale large scale projects like mining , deforestation are mostly done in the public rural areas. Most of these projects are being headed and driven by big corporations that doesn't consider the environmental and social implications of what they are doing before exploiting the natural resources in this rural areas.

• Inadequate Environmental Regulations:

In some regions where their government are either weak or corrupt don't punish this big corporations even when they pollute the environment.

Developing countries like Nigeria has these environmental protection laws but it is poorly enforced.

This also makes the rural populations to be vulnerable.
