BETWEEN US AND OUR FOREFATHERS.

In 1979, a carton of milk was sold for #10 with 96 tins in one carton, rice was #25 around that time and was sold for even less before then, a full chicken costs #1. 20kobo, decent jobs were not hard to come by, people were content, they tilled the soil and ate it's fruit. All they were concerned about was being able to feed well. The madness associated with quest for wealth which is now so widespread wasn't so bad. Then, people lived for long number of years and the death of a young one was seen as an abomination, you go out at odd hours with little fear for your safety....not my words but that of my dad.

How do I even correctly answer this question when I never lived in the past? If only I could summon my forefathers! Well, I asked my father who isn't my forefathers but who met his father's father who I guess could count as my forefather.
My father would always tell how life used to be 'fantabulous' before now. The food, music, culture, everything.
They worked hard to get the simplest things. They grew their food, used their herbs which was/is effective.

We on the other hand have better means of communication, efficient transport, good health care system, nice media and amenities. But then, these technologies also have adverse effects on us; pollution, health defects - we create diseases and then look for ways to treat them(please, don't ask me about this. Read between the lines), we get stressed from doing little physical activities and also we worry much. We have so many intelligence and security implementations yet we're so insecure. Crazy ideologies have been left behind as we are now more innovative and make adjustments that suit our time.

I think in their time, they had everything they needed to be happy, same way we have everything we need. Maybe, just maybe, the next generation would consider themselves more happy technologically and otherwise whilst we would claim to have better livelihood then they. People create happiness around themselves. It is what is obtainable.

2bP4pJr4wVimqCWjYimXJe2cnCgn4yFhCEYWpKoWG78.png

Even then, I cannot adequately say who lived/lives a better life. If I had to measure both our happiness(es) using material possessions as the yardstick, then, we have it better. But maybe in terms of contentment, livelihood and socialization, they had it better.
I cannot say for certain who's happier.
They had their beautiful times and so do we!

Truth true, the generation coming would see this our generation as more liveable compared to theirs, just as we are comparing ours with 18th century days.

Just like you mentioned, the comparison is based on different features, our forefathers were contended with what they had and they lived happily, while ours, we have an easier life with technology but much troubles too

Maybe the next generation might see us as more content than they.

Heheh one carton of milk 10 naira? Shey you dey whine me neh? 😂😂 Let's go to 1979 abeg.

Well, well, well. I know that money looks very small in our days, but trust me in their days, money was not common like that, they had Kobo too, So 10 naira was not small money then. A woman told me of how her salary was two thousand naira then, yet it takes care of everything she needs at home hehe. Those days money has value. they enjoyed a lot of natural things and lived happy lives. we on the other hand have artificial stuffs which helps to reduce the work load that made our ancestor's palms like that of rocks hehe. We have everything we need at our door steps life is far easier now than it was before. Just that were are also suffering a lot from the adverse effects of technology but the issue of who had it best is really complicated just like you said. For every era has its own uniqueness

Omo! And if they start telling you about those times, you'll see how excited they are. My dad said his salary was once #85 and it was big enough to take care of his needs... E dey do me one kind for ear😂

It's your last line for me. In time to come, we may still boast about living in better times than the younger ones.

Thank you for always showing up my Handy😁🥰🥰

Hehhe...
Can you imagine #85, solving every problem at home... It was really nice those days. I know you wish you could go back in time right? But every era has it own challenges too, forget it that life was sweet then. They could overcome their challenges because it was peculiar to them, if you should go back in time I assure you, you might not cope.

It's your last line for me. In time to come, we may still boast about living in better times than the younger ones.

Hahahhaaha, I am telling you, so let's just enjoy our own while we are still living.

You are always welcome handy like no other. Forgive him for late replies these days.

I'm sure I'm free to say my mine.., in all this , I will still prefer to go back to days of 1979.. hehehehe 😂😂

of course, the course of living wasn't difficult as it is now. Then people are not living in fear, but now, everything as turned upside down.

If we should put technology aside, we have nothing left in this present world.

Errrr, it's fun read from you, like there are some good points I also picked from what you wrote..

when it comes to contentment, i agree with you.. They don't dream of big cars or big house or things that drives youth of nowadays crazy, all they want is a good home and family..... But in term of socialization i think we have that better, they are limited to their surroundings but look at once, right in the corner of our room we can socialize with people in other countries, that is the beauty of the modern life that our fore fathers lack

Socialization is quite broad. If you speak of us using our gadgets, then you're correct. But how about physical interaction? Has technology not caused it's decline?

well yea, but that is not a disadvantage, that didn't make us sad, we love it and that is why we are focus on our phone, that is our new way of deriving happiness so it still doesn't change the fact our life is better

I disagree. It is a disadvantage. Take away the gadgets and so many will wallow in depression and loneliness. Why do you think it's so hard for us to stay without our phones?

you think so? if they take away my gadget today, i have tons of people to visit , so where is the loneliness and depression coming from?

Maybe you've worked around creating a balance between personal development and social media. Just maybe.
Doesn't apply to everyone. Many can barely hold simple physical conversations.

Many spend so much time online and have shut people off. But it is what it is.

I didn't create any balance, I didn't have time for them cos of my gadget so if that is eventually taken from me' I will give them my 100 percent attention and I think it is the same for everyone else, I don't see that as a. Disadvantage

Don't you think this 8s shooting yourself in the leg?
I understand you but I maintain that gadgets aside, so many will have to deal with loneliness.

I pretty sure our fore fathers would have never imagined that the prices of those items would be the way they are today. You know, sometimes I just wish I could go back to those old days.
I totally agree that happiness is what we make of it so we can't truly tell who was happier.
Thanks for sharing!❤️

They never saw it coming. Let's see what happens in time to come.

You know, sometimes I just wish I could go back to those old days

Really? Even with the lack of technological advancement? Do you think you'll be happier then?

I like how you write, but even better, I like how you compared both our generations and how we had things different. You didn’t just say which generation was better, but you stated what the different generations are(were) better in terms of. Great job!

I enjoyed the commentary on how the quality of life has been affected by inflation... there is a lot to think about in reference to modern times- is is really better or worse?

You probably didn't know, but the divider you downloaded from me with the circle is not free to use, it belongs to me. The image used to create it was taken by yours truly :). Mistakes happen. Please do not use it again. !LUV to you.

It is almost impossible to say but we're hopeful that things will get better.
