Instant coffee and the model

There comes a time in the life of every human being, when he or she stops at a crossroads and must decide which path to follow. It seems easy to do, but the truth is that when you are faced with the options that will decide your future, you can become paralyzed with fear.

I was born and raised among chickens, pigs, cows, vegetables and lots of coffee. A farm girl who only knew and knew how to do country things, as the city cousins say. My mother always made sure I studied and cultivated my passion for literature by giving me classic books.

I had never left my hometown. It was a beautiful small town with many farms and a large square where we gathered to sell our crops at the fair. My family and I were experts in selling coffee beans, freshly roasted, ground and hot coffee with Creole honey. Apart from the neighbors I was allergic to people, especially people from the city.

One day I received a huge box. It was signed by one of my cousins from the city. It said she was sending me all that junk she had taken out of her closet because she didn't like it anymore.

About a week after I had the closed box still under my bed, I decided to open it. Purses, clothes, fine shoes. Everything was in very good condition, there were even new things in their packaging. I don't know why my cousin said it was junk.

I sat at the entrance of the farm house and using all my cousin's gifts I took pictures. They turned out very nice, I looked like a magazine model. But it was not me, my essence and my spirit were not in those pictures, it looked like I had put on a mask.

I sent the pictures to my cousin so she could see how I looked in her things and I really forgot all about the mess of pictures and clothes. The next few weeks I was busy with my family preparing everything for the coffee producers exhibition at the local fair and I didn't even have time to think.

To tell the truth, my family was going through a very difficult time. The economy was not on our side and coffee sales were dropping to such an extent that the debts were not swallowing us up. I was so scared to see my parents cuddling in the kitchen crying because they didn't know where to go when we couldn't pay the mortgage.

Then, that sunny, hot August afternoon, there was a knock on the door and my father sent in 2 guys in suits and ties. They sat down in our living room and quickly all my siblings and my mother stood on the stairs to listen to the conversation.

The guys were bringing business propositions to the family. One of them opened his briefcase and proposed to my father to buy the entire coffee bean harvest for an instant coffee industry. The pupils of my father's eyes dilated and we saw this expression of sadness and disappointment on his face.

The family totally disagreed with instant coffee. I can tell you that we even hated it.
It is an offense to freshly ground roasted coffee.

The other guy told my father that his proposal was not about coffee, which surprised us since we thought the guys represented the same company. He opened his briefcase and took out some contract papers in my name. It was a youth fashion magazine that received the photographs my cousin sent them and with the royalties from the photographs they were bringing a whole truckload of clothes, shoes and accessories from different brands.

Everything was silent. My father, who could not get over the astonishment of the contract they were offering me, dismissed both guys so we could consult as a family about what we were going to do.

The guy from the magazine left a cell phone and a laptop on the table so that I could get active on the networks. According to him I should not waste time.

I went to bed with that whirlwind in my mind. I could not sleep. The biggest crossroads of my life: accept the instant coffee or face my biggest fear and become a model.

It's been a year now. Now I have to leave because I'm expected for a photo shoot with the new lenses I'm promoting in the magazine.

Wow! So many mixed emotions and opportunities there. An Instant Coffee farm does not sound so great, but the modelling job sounds amazing:)
