The biggest flood in the history of Rio Grande do Sul, in southern Brazil [EN/PT-BR]

It was an extremely difficult week in Rio Grande do Sul, in southern Brazil. From the beginning of the week, it started raining heavily and didn't stop until the end of the week. Right from the beginning, it was possible to realize that we would have several problems on the roads and flooding.

After occasional flooding and landslides in some places, news began to arrive of roadblocks and the risk of flooding in cities bathed by rivers in the region. Last year, we had already been through something similar, but this time it was clear that it could be even worse and more extensive.

Most of the highways were hit by landslides or washed away by rivers with water volumes much higher than what we had already seen. From then on, the population's routine changed completely with a rush to supermarkets and gas stations to avoid shortages, as road transport was hampered.

Afterwards, Civil Defense issued several alerts advising risk areas that should be evacuated as they were in the path of the floods that were about to occur. And, in fact, those who were in neighborhoods close to the rivers had to leave their homes.

Rio Grande do Sul has a geography where practically all the rivers that cross the state go to Lake Guaíba, which bathes Porto Alegre and the metropolitan region, and from there it goes to Lagoa dos Patos, and only then reaches the coast in Rio Grande, in the extreme south of the country.

After devastating the cities in the valley region, the flood reached the capital, surpassing the historic mark of 1941, when the center of Porto Alegre was taken by water, and reached the entire surrounding area that had not seen a flood like this for many years.

Unfortunately, Rio Grande do Sul, like Brazil, is not prepared for this type of disaster. A large part of the population is still taken by surprise as they cannot imagine the extent of the flood and how their lives are at risk in the face of an extreme situation like this.

Now, all we can do is work to save the lives that can still be saved, rebuild the affected cities and the road structure and prepare for the next one.

Foi uma semana extremamente difícil no Rio Grande do Sul, no sul do Brasil. Desde o início da semana, começou a chover forte e não parou mais até o fim da semana. Logo no começo, foi possível perceber que teríamos diversos problemas nas estradas e alagamentos.

Depois de alagamentos pontuais e deslizamento de encostas em alguns locais, começaram a chegar notícias de bloqueios nas estradas e risco de enchente nas cidades banhadas pelos rios da região.

No ano passado, já havíamos passado por algo semelhante, mas desta vez estava claro que poderia ser ainda pior e mais abrangente.

Boa parte das rodovias foram atingidas por deslizamentos de encostas ou levadas por rios com volume de água muito acima do que já havíamos visto. A partir daí, a rotina da população mudou completamente com uma corrida aos supermercados e postos de combustível para evitar desabastecimento, já que o transporte rodoviários estava prejudicado.

Em seguida, a Defesa Civil emitiu diversos alertas orientando as áreas de risco que deveriam ser evacuados por estarem no caminho das enchentes que estavam prestes a acontecer. E, realmente, quem estava nos bairros próximos aos rios teve que deixar suas casas.

O Rio Grande do Sul tem uma geografia onde praticamente todos os rios que cruzam o estado se dirigem até o Lago Guaíba, que banha Porto Alegre e a região metropolitana, e de lá segue para a Lagoa dos Patos, para só então chegar ao litoral em Rio Grande, no extremo sul do país.

Depois de devastar as cidades na região dos vales, a enchente chegou à capital, superou a marca histórica de 1941, quando o centro de Porto Alegre foi tomado pelas águas, e atingiu todo o entorno que não via uma enchente como essa há muitos anos.

Infelizmente, o Rio Grande do Sul, assim como o Brasil, não está preparado para esse tipo de desastre. Boa parte da população ainda é pega de surpresa por não imaginar a extensão da inundação e como suas vidas estão em risco diante de uma situação extrema como essa.

Agora, só nos resta trabalhar para salvar as vidas que ainda podem ser salvas, reconstruir as cidades atingidas e a estrutura viária e se preparar para a próxima.
