Social media is a distraction that is also needed

We all have things that distract us, for some people, it is their hobbies.

Many things can distract me but I get to know my weaknesses and stay away from some of those things...

During my secondary school days, there is one thing that used to happen to me which I also figured out because it kept repeating itself when I gained admission into junior secondary school, I took the first position in my class but my position kept going down in each term, second term in jss1 I took 27th position, in jss2, I took 49 and second term in jss2, I got 247!

My school was changed when I got the JSS3 to a private school and my performance became good again, they don't use positions in the secondary school and there were not as many as in the public school, but still, I noticed my performance started dropping again in second term till I graduated and went to another school for my senior secondary school.

As usual, on my first day in the new school, I met them having a class and I joined and when the teacher asked a question, I raised up my hand to answer and the students clapped for me, the first term, as usual, was great but again in ss2, I started doing badly.

I was even promoted to ss 3 on trial and I was glad I didn't repeat... It was later after school that I figured out why I was like that, my first time somewhere I had no friends so I always focused on my studies but the moment the students got to know me and I became friends with them, I lost focus and that used to affect my studies terribly.

The thing still happens to me now, I easily gain the attention of people and it affects my work but I have learned to have alone time and one thing I refuse to do now is to keep offline friends because that will reduce my online time, I have more online friends and since we are all working online, no effect! but yeah friends are distractions so I try to keep the numbers very small.

Social media

Social media is a big distraction and I think this applies to most people using browsing phones, there are some social media sites that you will enter that you won't be able to leave, the number 1 on the list is TikTok, I rarely post on TikTok, I have just 6 posts on my account but I am always there watching different things ranging from dancing videos to motivational quote, trending gist, and other fun stuff...

Sometimes I will follow one gist and enter another account, from there I might find a comment which gets me curious about the commentator and again move to the person's account, so exploring does not end on TikTok and you won't realize you have spent 5 hours streaming what does not concern you lol, so sometimes I found myself lost in some videos that I would abandon the work am doing, TikTok is a big distraction for me but I am not planning to stop watching the videos there anytime soon.

Netflix

This is another big distraction of mine, I love watching movies but I had to stop because I can't be working and watching film at the same time, I like giving my full attention to the movie so I can understand it, just like yesterday, I rewatch the movie Alice in borderland and that cost me 4 hours that I could have used being productive but one must learn to have fun too.... All work without play ain't healthy.

Rather than see these two as a distraction, I see them as my go-to whenever I am tired of working, they keep me happy...

Those days of your secondary school was when children were still schooling, now social media have actually destroyed the academic system, yesterday I was just watching a set of students going for NECO exam they were busy doing TikTok on the street, tell me how the will be able to do something good in the class.

It's becoming something else this days.

Social media, like TikTok, and streaming services, such as Netflix, are major distractions, yet they also serve as necessary breaks from work. Our ability to balance these distractions with productivity is very crucial, and having a strong sense of self-discipline helps manage their impact. Nice one my friend.

you are right man, self discipline is necessary but unfortunately most people can't control the urge to stay away from those distractions.

I can understand it's it's the reality of most of us and we spend a lot of time. Fortunately, I am hardly distracted and I am focused most of the time. But at the same time, it's also a disadvantage for me because I can't focus on multiple things when it's need also. I think unless discractractin is not harmful for us it's ok and there is nothing wrong with it.

Would you believe that I have uninstalled all the social media apps on my phone except Instagram because that’s my favorite but always make sure that I do not spend more than 30 minutes on it in a day. I joined Elixir yesterday and that’s why I had to post on TikTok yesterday if not, I won’t go there.
I said from the fact that those applications may be distractions, they also have a way of costing us because we have to subscribe and they even need so much data and instead of us to be making money, we’d be watching TikTok, lok

oh yea the subscription part is another story, cos tiktok, Instagram and the likes sucks data like juice...

We just have to adjust the way we make use of those platforms
We need to put a limit so that it does not affect our lives especially the way so many people dedicate more time to them which is not really supposed to be so

it is nt easy to adjust, the moment we log into them, it is always hard to leave

It actually looks like recently, the negative side of social media is getting much more than the positive side actually

Social media was not invented to cause so much effect it has on we humans in the current era. But unfortunately, several people misuse it and make use of it inappropriately and have affected others with their content and what they post on these social media apps. However, there are still severally people that make use of it to be productive and make so much money for their self from it , without causing a negative impact on the people. So I just believe social media isn't bad , it just depends on how an what you make use of it for . Have a nice day bro 🙏

I can totally relate with tik tok
Tik tok is a very huge distraction
But I had to learn discipline
With that I was able to reduce how much time I spent there
I got so good at disciplining my self to the point that I can decide not to go on tik tok for a whole week
And it worked for me
