1885 MS62 DMPL Morgan Dollar

With the exception of modern mintages put out by the US Mint, there are no deliberate proof Morgan dollars made. There are, however, a small select few coin blanks among the first few struck that were so clean, and struck head-on, that they appear to be proof like. The die would then wear down with each additional coin blank struck, so this proof like effect was unintentional and limited to very few coins.

Obverse

The abbreviation of "DMPL" stands for "Deep Mirror Proof-Like." The downside to these coind is that getting the right lighting and camera angle is very tricky with these.

I apologize I couldn't get a better shot than this.

As you can see contrasting the flat field around the portait with the portrait itself, shining a light on a non-proof surface causes the surface to absorb some of the light. With the proof-like field, however, far more light is reflected back, which is why it looks so bright in the picture.

Reverse

The reverse has the same effect as well, although it's not as noticeable due to all of the extra detail surrounding the eagle.

The suggested price for this is around $260, but I was able to pick it up for $245. I've always wanted one of these, but the higher grade DMPL coins are easily $400+. This one was a budget option that's still beautiful and highly collectible.

There's nothing wrong with that. I don't have a lot of collector pieces like these. I still try to stick to cheap bullion.
