“Look it’s an eagle,” Kola said, and as the boys searched the skies for the bird, Kola picked up his bike and made for the road. He ran with the bike a little, the tires rolling, before jumping on it and peddling with every inch of power he had.

Kola is running said Dayo the apparent leader of the gang he took his bike and raced in the direction where Kola was going. Soon they arrived at Kola’s street and as they passed by Kola’s compound, his bike was already parked beside his father's car. Dayo hissed as they ride passed the compound.

“What happened to your hands,” Kola’s mother asked as she saw the little red bruise on his elbow. Kola immediately pulled his shirt over it breathing out a “Nothing” as he went to his room where he got on his computer and started chatting with his friend Eva206.

“How are you enjoying your weekend? ” Kola saw that the message was some minutes ago and knew Eva206 would still be online. “I’m having fun with my friends” he replied, wincing as his elbow greased the tabletop.

“Let me guess, you fell again“ Eva206 replied, Kola felt weird as he thought to himself, “how did Eva20 know I have an Injury or something”. After a few minutes, Kola was still debating on the response to send to Eva206. Another message from Eva206.

“Don’t worry Ko20, I’m sure you’ll have a better weekday. Kola only smiled at the message as he responded with a “Thank you” and they went on to talk about video games and which cards they had earned while playing.

Monday came soon and Kola felt like it was another round of escaping Dayo and his cohorts again. This time he won’t be alone as his friend Chike who he had gone to visit during the weekend would be available. He hurried into the bus that morning with his mom handing down his lunch box to him.

Kola always felt shy anytime his mom came out with him like that, he wanted to be seen as a big boy. On the other hand, it excited Dayo who would scream Mama’s boy in the bus as soon as he hopped in.
Dayo couldn’t do anything on the bus as their teacher was there.

That Monday, he placed chewing gum on the seat he knew Kola would be heading for. The burst of laughter from Dayo and his friends after Kola took his seat meant something was wrong. Kola didn’t notice it until his friend Chike joined him and they left their seats as the bus came to a stop.

“You have gum on your shorts,” Chike said, he helped Kola to remove some and then told him it won’t come off since it has been long.
“Only a long wash will remove the remaining one” Chike added.

As they saw Chike removing the gum, the culprits started laughing and making their way to the classroom. Chike and Kola soon got to their seats in the classroom and not long after, their English teacher made an announcement.

“We have a new student, everyone, meet Evelyn,” She said, and pointed at a seat just in front of Chike and Kola, for the tall, light-skinned, and pink-lipped girl.

“That is your seat,” she said, “Okay let’s continue from chapter five” she added as everyone brought out their textbooks and place them on the table.

“You missed the roll” Ade, a fat boy playing the base drum shouted at Kola, who was lost looking at Evelyn as she made her way to the field. He quickly adjusted and started playing again unbeknownst to him that Evelyn was staring at him also from afar.

When the band was done with the phase, Kola turned to look in the direction of Evelyn and caught her staring at him. She only smiled and he couldn’t do anything than to look away as his face widened with a smile.

The music came to a halt again when Dayo came and took the drumsticks from Kola.
“Give it back to him Dayo,” a faint voice from behind said, Dayo turned around and upon seeing Evelyn, he immediately shoved the sticks back into Kola’s hand and ran away.

Everyone was surprised, Kola couldn’t believe his eyes. How did she know him? What was Dayo so afraid of, that he obeyed Evelyn in a breath? Kola almost turned red when she came close and whispered “ Hello, Ko20”.

Thank you for sharing your story with us in The Ink Well. It’s most fortunate for Kola that his online friend arrives in time to stop the bullies. Also, Kola get to meet his intuitive online pal in person.

The story could have been developed more fully - you’ve got a good premise here, but we feel that we would like to know more - for instance, why the bully would listen to Evelyn, but not to Kola.

@buezor Surely Evelyn must have been following Kola already, or she must have been chatting with him with a fake ID, they met very mysteriously. I wish ko20 a bright future.

That was fun to read @buezor, and I liked the ending on this one; there could be a multitude of reasons why Dayo was afraid of Evelyn. Good job on the construction and imagination of this story.
