Tis' The Season... Or The End Of It!!
We’re in a new month, and at the moment, so many things are happening right now! It’s kind of great when you think about it and from the look of things, it promises to be a great last month of the year. Although the weather is still refusing to be in the festive season with the rest of us, not with the sun being so hot as if it’s punishing us for something we did, and Harmattan being almost nonexistent.
But still, there are so many things that are going great already and it’s beautiful to watch them unfold. At this rate, one can only hope that with time the season will only become even more enjoyable because that seems to be the least we can do.
I already told you that we started our exams, and since we’ve been writing for more than a few days now, some students have already written their final papers and as a result, my school is awash with students wearing identical clothes and “signing out”. This is actually one of the highlights of students, the final day of your exams, and seeing as it’s something that is only going to come once in a lifetime for many of us, the least you can do is to go with the flow and enjoy it as well.
After the final years have written, it’s normal to see many of them gathered around in groups and taking pictures. In my department, Electrical Electronics Engineering, the finalists wore Hi-Vis safety jackets and hard hat helmets. A symbol of not just the department, but the entire School of Engineering.
It’s great to see many of them as they sign out because many of them are my close friends. We all started ND1 together and I would have been graduating with them, but I chose to spend an extra year at home after my one-year IT. So, in a way, this is also my win because I’m really happy for them.
However, the main point of this is not really the signing out. It’s actually what comes after. Yesterday was really noisy in my area as the students at home celebrated their grandaunts in a totally different fashion. Which is the baptism of water!
On the day of every student’s final paper, which is the day you drop your pen for the last time, those around you would pour you water. And by “pour you water”, I don’t mean they will simply pour it on you. No, they will stone you with water! Kind of like the way firefighters don’t just pour water on fire to put it out! Generators were turned on just to pump water, bags and bags of sachet water were bought and unleashed on those who finished yesterday.
And by the time it was over, the streets looked like it had rained sachet water. But that wasn’t even the end of it! Knock-outs are in season and yesterday the only woman who sold them in my area sold them all out as boys didn’t let us hear word. It sounded like a gun battle yesterday with all the explosions and bangs, enough to move a person’s heart from the left side to the right side.
And the funny thing is, it’s still going to happen today. And happen again tomorrow. Because students will be signing out every day now and they’ll be celebrating it. Even if you don’t want to, they’ll come to your room and celebrate it for you. By pouring you water of course.
It’s all fun and games. This is something you only get to do once in your life, so I can’t begrudge anyone the pleasure. Even though you go to another school and graduate again, you might not have that kind of fun again. Now, not everyone is up for the baptism, I have a friend who locked himself up in his room because he didn’t want them to pour him water. Everyone has their own specs.
As for me, I don’t know yet. I still have another session to go and as it stands I could get the baptism and I couldn’t. You know I’m a father figure in society and it wouldn’t do for people to see me running around drenched to my bone now, would it?😋. But then, you really only live once, right?🤔
Either way, all that is next year’s problem. I still have a long time to figure out what I’ll do when the time comes. As for now, I’ll just celebrate with my friends in their wins and hope that when it gets to my turn, I’ll scale through just as smoothly as well.

Haha, I thought as university students they would have grown beyond the water-pouring traditions. I don't like the tradition and it can cause accidents. I heard of a case where a person poured acid on a friend mistakenly because the person thought it was water.
Hah... they've not grown past it ooo! 😂
Omo... that's a really costly mistake to make oo! How did they even get acid in the first place? Really scary!
I can't remember the full story anymore. But the story made I and my friends stop the habit back in high school
The joy of signing out is quite huge for every student, it's a huge achievement and something we are always looking forward to.
During my time, it was just the regular signing-out but the other students went to a party. I didn't go because it would be rough and that's not my kind of party.
A session will pass shortly and you have to put away the fatherly figure away just for that day. I do be glad to be among those who will pour you water 😆
Hah... you want to pour me water? Chai... so my father figure status will not save me 😮
But then, let's see how it all unfolds!
Signing out may be the last day of our college but it is the most special day of our college. This day is also very emotional for most of the students because we know that these college days are never going to come again.
I am very regretful that I could not attend the last day of my college because I had to attend the wedding of one of my close relatives and I still regret this. Whenever I see a photo of my relative or friend's last day of college on social media, I feel very sad that I could not enjoy this day and I miss this day a lot.
However, you still have a year to think about this and I would advise you to do something unique so that everyone remembers this day fondly.
Oh boy... that's something that can never come back. But I guess you were going to miss something, whether you liked it or not. It was a really tough call, but you had to make it!
Yes, I am very sad that this time is not going to come back and I am very regretful that I could not attend.
WOW 😲! I wish I could be there to pour you water. Hahaha 😄. To be schooling and also involve so much in the hive learners community is a very big job. Weldon dear.
I try my best!
Thank you😁

Thank you for this!
@bruno-kema, You are most welcome.
And don't forget to support me back
It was actually worth to celebrate the 5 years been used in school. It was worth it actually
Watching students sign out gives me joy, firstly, they didn't lose their lives through the course of getting a certificate. They overcame the stress of schooling in Nigeria.
Students in my school do not pour themselves water, they only sign on each other's shirt and dance tirelessly to music.
I would advice that you to enjoy it when the time comes...It's a one time opportunity (Father figure😅😅)
