I’ve gone through many of the posts that were made under the current topic for the Hive Learners community which is Back To Business, and reading through them all, I noticed one thing in common. Most of us had been happy with the holidays and didn’t want them to end, and there were those that were actually glad to return back to the bliss of routine.

But still, whether you were happy the holidays were over or not, we all wanted it to come to an end so that we could get on with our lives. I’m not saying this because of the financial weight that holidays come along with, I am talking about something totally different.

Right from when we were little, we have always been told that too much of everything can never be good. And this worked for both sides of the divide as well, for good and bad things, too much of any can be detrimental to a person.

Eating too much is bad, exercising too much is unhealthy, and even being too much of a good person is bad because people will always find a way to use it against you. The only way to be able to cope with all this is to go moderate. We have to know the point we can take to until it stops being healthy for us.

But then, such things also bleed into things like holidays.

So, I asked myself, what would it be like if I was on a permanent holiday? If I didn’t have to work ever again, I had enough money to last me a lifetime and I could do whatever I wanted. What was I going to do? Probably visit exotic islands, dance under the moonlight, and drink myself to stupor.

This sounds like everyone’s dream, right? But then, if we are given that choice, are we really going to choose to not do anything for the rest of our lives? After all, that is the point. To not do anything.

That was when I realized something, as stressful as our jobs can be, as time-consuming and totally annoying as work can be, we can’t do without them. And I don’t mean this in its financial capacity.

Work gives meaning to life and every other thing there is. As you know, when there is an excess of everything, it losses its value. The reason we all value the holidays so much is that we know it is very limited. The reason people fly in from all over the world just to spend a few days of Christmas in their village is that those few days only come once a year and if they should miss it, it will have to be until the next year.

If every day was a holiday, if every day was spent with friends and loved ones, just gisting, eating and having a good time. Just day in and day out, doing nothing else, the value attached to such gatherings will diminish over time.

I once told someone, the reason we enjoy our visit with extended family during the yuletide season is that we know that we would not see them again for at least a year. That is what makes those moments feel special. But then, if we are to be living with them, the season would not have all that brightness and color we have come to associate it with.

And then, on the flip side, the holidays also act as a source of motivation for work. Imagine having to work every freaking day, with no hope of getting a break. Day in and day out, you’ll just keep on doing the same thing. A boring old routine that is enough to send someone spiraling into depression.

The holidays give us something to look forward to, a time to take a break from all the stress. A time to spend with family and loved ones because work has been keeping us away from them for way too long. People look forward to their holidays because they know just how valuable it is. Who doesn’t like those golden days of sitting back and doing absolutely nothing?

And then, once it’s over, we giddy up and return to work. And the cycle continues. Life goes on. Personally, I feel that work and holiday are both sides of a coin, one can’t be separated from the other. If you are having one, you should have the other.

This is why when people retire, many of them look for other forms of work. Some choose to volunteer, some take up a hobby, and some open up a business. Anyway, they just do something! That is the main point. Because doing nothing in the long term can prove to be dangerous. The saying that the idle mind is the devil’s workshop is not a lie at all.

So, my dear friends, whatever you are doing, work or holiday, please endeavor to do it to your best. Try to enjoy yourself regardless. If you are working, put in your best effort, and if you are flexing, have the time of your life. Because when we look at the big picture, we are either doing one or we are doing the other. Those are our choices.

Of course, you might disagree with my view on this. I would very much like to know what you think. This thought crossed my mind and I thought I would share it.

So, what do you think?

I have never thought of this and it's so true.
If we hang out a lot or spend time a lot with depends and family, we will get tired of them and everything.

Let There be this desire to always see them but can't see them till holiday and we get to so the travellings.
There's is always time for everything and when that time expires you have to stop and do another.

Your writeup gives another view of holidays and work and I love it so much❤

Indeed, scarcity increases value. The less we have of something, the more we value it.
