Be careful of the people who you surround yourself with and call your friends, because just as much as they have the ability to uplift you and make you a better version of yourself, they can also destroy you if care is not taken.

When it comes to making friends, it’s really just a roll of the dice. You start out the relationship hoping it will work out, but by the time you learn more about yourselves, you’ll realize you were not as compatible as you thought. Then, you both will naturally drift apart. With new friends, getting the good ones is simply 50/50.

Many people are lucky enough to realize from the get that the people they are friends with are not really good people and they make sure to cut it off at once. But for those who are unlucky… it’s sad to think that you have a friend whereas you are not considered that way. You’re just the only one in the relationship.

Having terrible friends can be a terrible thing indeed, and if we’re not careful, they can destroy us, like I said. I noticed something like this a few weeks back when my coursemates and I had to write a test. It wasn’t until after the test that I noticed a person wasn’t around, and the only reason I noticed it was because I approached his friends looking for him when they told me he didn’t come to school. I was shocked, because we just wrote a test, how could he miss it? Although it was an impromptu test, still went on for long enough that if he had been called he would have at least made it to do even if it was just half of the test.

His friends didn’t call him. Would you believe he had been in school at the time? Not just in our lecture hall, he said he had something else to do that took his time. If he had known there was a test he would have hurried over to our hall at once. And just like that, this guy failed the test.

This is just for a simple test, what about in life itself? Many times we could be surrounded by people who get jealous of the little achievements we make. We would work our butts off, trying to earn an honest living and our so-called friends will be simmering with envy.

One thing you should pray for as a person with friends is that all your friends make it around the same time. Because one thing I’ve found out is that failing alone or succeeding alone can be a lonesome journey and both can ruin great friendships.

When we are the only ones succeeding, we would have to watch ourselves. As we climb higher in life, we might not have as much time as we used to and it could be misinterpreted as having pride. And then, you’ll have to watch the way you talk about your success around your friends so it doesn’t look like you’re bragging. Always working on eggshells. This will get tiring, that’s why when one friend begins to make it, they usually end up leaving the group altogether. Unless the friendship is a really strong one.

When we’re the only ones failing, it’s even worse, especially if we’re up to three or four in the group. It’ll be as if there is something we’re missing that the others seem to have in bulk. We could begin to get jealous of the success of our friends and we’ll notice that they keep talking more and more to themselves and a lot of conversations will no longer involve us. And eventually, we might end up keeping our distance as well, just for mental health.

However, when everyone is winning, the party never stops. It feels great when you can brag about your achievements and show off just how you spent your money, without being worried about hurting people’s feelings. And you can only do this with your friends who are succeeding. They will never find it insulting because they know that as you are making your moves, they are also making theirs. Everyone might be doing it in different fields, but as long as they are all growing and winning together, the vibes will remain.

My closest friends, I met them here in my school, and together, we’ve been growing and learning. It’s been a long journey from the naïve freshers we were back then, relying on allowances from our parents to survive from month to month. And now, we have changed so much, this growth is not isolated to one person, and that’s what’s so beautiful about it.

We’ve been together and things have been going great, and I’ll always be grateful for having them in my life. My guys, I’m sure that no matter what the ask is, as long as they can they will always turn up for me. You don’t know the value of your friends when things are rosy, you know that when things are bad for you and you really need them. That is when you’ll know if they really feel for you the way you feel for them.

My friends and I have been through those moments, and as we keep on growing and learning, it is my hope that success remains spread out among all of us. We’ll leave no man behind!
