Just Not Needed!!!
When it comes to the courses that people study today, you’ll be shocked to learn about how ineffective such courses would be in the modern day. Hell, they might even be on their way out, but for some reason, people still go to school to study them. There are so many courses that technology and innovation have rendered obsolete, yet we still see students taking on that field.
But then, the reason for this is not that farfetched. When you think about it, especially in this country, it can be pretty hard to get into a higher institution to study a course of your choosing. You’d want to study medicine, but they’ll give you biochemistry. You would want to study biochemistry, but they’ll give you biology or chemistry.
It’s crazy, but this is something so many students face on a regular basis. But then, what can they do? I’ve come to the realization that a lot of students don’t go to school because they want to learn, they go because of pressure. Pressure from family and pressure from society because they don’t want to be seen as the person who “didn’t even finish school”. As a result, many people don’t even want to be there, so they’ll be willing to accept whatever is given to them just so they can answer the title of “student”.
If not, tell me why an Electrical engineering aspirant would be willing to study Physics as a course. Or Why would a Theater Arts aspirant settle for Library studies? These are totally different courses from what is applied for, but because they want to be students, they simply accept them. As a result, they end up in a course they don’t want and a degree that they might never be able to fully utilize.
And that brings me to a course that I feel is going to be obsolete. For me, the top billing is Library Science or Library Studies, depending on your school. Personally, I don’t even recall the last time I saw a library. We have one here in my school, but the last time I entered it was during my first year. And this is coming from an avid reader and a published author.
I’m not talking about the rest of the world, but here in Nigeria, the library business is not really encouraging. This is why seeing people still take it as a degree is unnerving. With e-books and blogs, just about everything is online and as such, easily accessible. There are still functioning libraries in Nigeria, but before you would see a job in any of them, or before you’d actually be able to use the certificate in the way that you should, you’ll have to go through some deep levels of nepotism.
At most, if you can afford it, you’ll end up opening a bookshop of your own where you’ll sell books. But if you’re unlucky, you’ll most likely end up working in a bank or as a secretary in some company. The only way one would make it is if they have a side hustle that will sooner become their main hustle.
This doesn’t have to be the end. I’m sure that things can get better, but only if our perception of libraries changes. In my secondary school, we had a library and I made good use of it by reading novels (both local and foreign). Here in my higher institution, I quickly found that there were not a lot of novels, which was one of the things that put me off. I don’t know if they’ve improved since then. I guess I’d never find out seeing how I’m a former student now.
I pray for a country where what you study for ends up being what you get to do. Going into Library Studies gives you a solid future in the world of libraries, just as going into Fisheries should. Sadly, I live in a country where what you pay for is never really what you get. So, students have to wise up and only take on courses that will help them. If not, as you’re studying that course, have a backup. After all, you can’t be studying to be an astronaut in Nigeria and expect the government to put you in a rocket when you graduate.
Even sef ask yourself, if they ask you to enter the rocket, will you enter?

I am graduated and still I fell there are many nonsense course that are irrelevant. Those are not related to our goal or real life. I don't fine any use case of those courses. But we completed those courses to pass exams as we are helpless to the education system.
As in ehn... we're helpless to them indeed. We can only do what they demand of us.
Library science is one of those course that have been overtaken by technological advancements. Library in the form digital is at the tip of everyone now.
Yeah... so just about everyone can do it.
