December Can't Be Complete Without These...
Of course, it’s still December and there are just so many things for us to do in this season. One can argue that it’s everyone’s favorite season of the year, considering how it’s loaded with holidays. It’s also that one time of the year that if you choose not to work, everyone will understand and even encourage you not to do more than necessary.
For a month that has only 31 days, there sure is so much to be done and so many things to be accomplished. If we’re gonna make this season as memorable as we want it to be, we’d have to be willing to step out of our shell for a bit and actually enjoy many of the goodies the season has to offer. If not, December will go and January will barrel in, and we’ll still find ourselves doing the exact same thing. Which is boring!!!
In my family, we definitely have traditions that we follow as well, but from the look of things, I’m beginning to suspect that I might not be able to follow that tradition this year. Unless of course, everyone comes down here to the east. But considering our numbers, and the high cost of traveling, I don’t think that’ll be happening.
Normally, around this time of the year, one of the things we’d always do is decorate the house for the season. And usually, we go all out. We use flowers, ribbons and balloons, stickers, and even Christmas trees. I’m usually in charge of this, and I give it my best. Last two years, we couldn’t get a Christmas tree, so I had to fashion one out of a flower vase and its stand.
And then, don’t forget all the lights I had to string all around the house as well. Lighting it up like fireworks. At night, it’s always a glorious sight, watching the different colors come to life. But then, all this is only for aesthetics, there are still other traditions.
December is always a time of full houses! Whether we’re spending it in Lagos or not. My married siblings will come with their family to our house and it’ll be a jolly time. We’ll eat, talk and drink. When everyone is under the same roof, it’s always a happy moment and there’s little to be sad about. On other days, we gather at either the house of my brother, or my sister. And the fun continues.
We don’t really go out much during the festive season, and this is because it can be frustrating. You see, that December 25th you plan to have your fun by either going to a restaurant or amusement park, around a million other people want to go to those places on that day as well. This causes the place to be jampacked with people and it’s just stressful. You could go to a restaurant and they’ll be out of space for you, yet they’ll still serve you food. You’ll either stand and eat it, or sit on the floor or bench. Someone once told me how he and his girlfriend had to sit on a fence to eat because there were no chairs available.
I see all this as pointless suffering. Which is why I choose to spend it with family. I can go out on other days, but definitely not on those specific days.
Another thing I do (a personal tradition) is to visit my friends during this period. Years ago, my friends and I used to go to the houses of most of our adult friends in the church. It was always fun. We could spend the entire day just moving through houses, always on full bellies. And by the time we get home, we might not be able to eat food our family prepared.
But all that was in the past. Now, I just visit my friends because it’s a good time to do so. If not now, then it may be never because many of them don’t even stay around. Now, that I’m pretty certain I’ll spend my December in the east, I’ll have to pay a couple of cousins visits and also my favorite aunt. It’s been too long since I saw her and it’s just not good.
So many things about this year will be different, but I’m looking forward to everything it has to offer. I just hope that in the end, by the time we cross into the new year, things will be on a lighter note and we’ll enter the new year in a better place than we’re ending this present one. I guess that’s all we can hope for.
You have taken good responsibility @bruno-kema. If there is no Christmas tree, now there will be due to your efforts. We miss many events abroad and something with family is really special. I appreciate, your visit to your friend, it makes our friendship bond more strong. It looked like last month of the year will be more busy for you, have a good and beautiful day.

I can tell that you are in the mood for the season already which is awesome. Decorations are compulsory in some households but we just settle for the Christmas light here.
There is always food in surplus for our guests and it not the time for us to go around. It's purely family time with after Christmas, we step out to have fun outdoor.
Did you just say that food is always surplus????
No go whine me ooo!!! I'm coming over at once, that surplus food must not pass me by sir!!!
Lolz, there is always food sir. 😂
Let me know if you decide to come to lagos sir.
Aww
That means you people love decorations a lot
It is really cool though
I can’t wait for this holiday so I can rest and runaway from work
Yeah... I love it and it's always fun to put them up.
Hah... for others, the holiday has begun! You'll get yours soon though!!
I completely agree with you and I myself have experienced this thing that during the festival season, lot of peoples have holidays, due to which people make plans for entertainment outside in restaurants or parks. This is the reason why such a huge crowd gathers during the festival season and in this crowd, we are neither able to enjoy properly nor are we able to spend proper time with those with whom we have come to hang out. If I can, I also like to stay at home and spend time with my family. Even during festival time, I help my family members in preparing some delicious dish and when there are many household chores to be done, I prefer to enjoy at home rather than going out and getting headache in such a crowd.
Yeah... I can relate to this. Sometimes, it feels like staying at home is way better than having to go out. But every once in a while, it won't be a bad idea to just step out and catch some fun with everyone else!!
House decoration is one of the cool things we haven't tried yet during Christmas celebration, not even a flower pr ribbon in the house😅😅. The lighting and colours are more obvious and beautiful at night than day time.
The usual thing I do to participate in celebrating Christmas at home is buying and running errands😢😢 😂😂
Every public places are always packed during Christmas because each family wants to go out. I rarely go out during Christmas celebration because I don't like the vibe of everyone putting on new clothes and shoes, moving along the same road..... I just don't like it😂
Hah... try it! The decorations, and the lights especially, they add to the Christmas spirit. Once we put them up, they never go off,( unless power gets interrupted) and they remain like that until we take them down in January.
The only thing I don't like about them is the Christmas song the light sings, the sound is horrible!😂😂
I should suggest it in this Christmas.
That sound and song should have been improved now (trying to play it in my head right now)😂😂. It's more better and pleasing without the song and sound.
House decorations and placing of Christmas trees in homes is a common tradition during this time of the year, it shows Christmas is near, I have never visited a restaurant during Christmas period because I barely have time to finish eating what is prepared at home😅. Visiting house to house on Christmas day, that is what I call aluta celebration. it will be fun but definitely not what I would try on a Christmas day.
Those were the days indeed. It was always so much fun. But it only worked then because we were young and dumb. Visiting houses now as we did before will only set us up for see-finish. Not me, sir😁
See finish indeed 😅😂
Christmas tree design and light is looking good. I think making it was also enjoyable.
So you are going to visit your friend and cousins and that's good. It's a good opportunity to meet with them within short time.
In any kind of festival I also avoid restaurant and Park 😅 because there I can also see the same situation like you said here🤣.
Yeah... I avoid those crowds like a plague because for me it destroys the entire essence of what we're trying to celebrate.
