The Value of Work

Welcome to another week in a new month. I bet you all have stories to tell, a lot of things accomplished and the failures that came with them all. Anyway, I have my stories as well, but we all do.

It is a new month after all, so, we focus on new things. Many of you have the habit of writing and setting down goals to be accomplished for the day, week, month and/or even year. I do not do that, I have everything swirling inside my thick skull. This made me wonder about this thing called work.

The Value of Work

Work is essential for man’s survival in this world. Apart from the psychological part of it that states that man is at his best state of mind when he is doing or pursuing something, working is also beneficial for the physical aspect of it and the financial of course.

We are all different people called into different fields and therefore, the way we approach problems are different. We have those that do hard and manual labour and then we have those who are constantly putting their brains to work. Work is very vital in today’s society but sadly, we see that not many want to engage in it for so many reasons. The system here (I do not know how it is over there now in your country) has put it in place that those who do not want to work do not have to work and those who do, pay for the welfare of those who don’t work.

I wonder how those who are yet to get into the real world will learn to appreciate the value that work provides. I wonder just how people who have been taught to let someone else care for everything would understand the time and effort it takes to build something. This is why we have so many entitled people today. Everyone feels they are owed something when the world owes them nothing.

The Modern Economy

The world has changed a lot from what we knew it. Now, we see people making it from doing the most bizarre things. Some 20 years ago, if anyone told me I would be behind a computer screen writing on a decentralized whatnot and that I would not be subject to one boss but several in the form of community, I would have thought that person was crazy. When this person goes on to tell me that what I earn is totally mine and how I create my content is totally up to me, I would believe that person was very crazy.

However, that is what is happening today. We earn by working smart now and not hard. We see the Proof-of-brain at work in the life we know today. This is beneficial in so many ways, yet, we see people who just do not want to do anything. We have people who prefer to scroll through social media daily and then decide to be influencers. I am not saying that is a bad idea in anyway. I am just wondering just how many true influencers we have out there.

Self-Employed x Employed Worker

See, it is good that many of us want to start something for ourselves. Like being an influencer, I mean with the way the world is going and constantly turning on its head, it would be better to have something of your own that you can nurture. But just who is ready to be self-employed?

Being an entrepreneur is way more work that we think. I am one and it takes not just the knowledge of something to go into it. It also takes a lot of humility, interpersonal skills, curiosity and personal coupled with mental development. I think one of the many reasons why people do not entertain the idea of starting up something is (other than fear) laziness. We do not just become a boss one day and things begin to move smoothly.

Many of the people who came out and became something of themselves have accumulated enough experience in that field or they just started as a mutt in the rut. They worked for people and they observed to learn. Therefore, they have knowledge but they do not bury their curiosity either.

Experience x Adaptability

Curious people always learn something along the way. There is always something new to explore and this trait make them an invaluable asset because they put their knowledge to work and create things we have not seen. Things that leave us mind-blown and wonder how they arrived at the result they share with us.

That is curiosity and experience. However, what do we have to say about people with little to no experience? The one hit wonders. Those who just up and kaboom into the sun. There are so many opinions of how these set of people crash and burn. They always fall at some point. While I also believe this, I know there is what is called flexible adaptability. I am one of those.

I was a one hit wonder, but I was very quick to learn along the way. One of the many things my wife loves about me. I am always curious and keep learning and I guess that kept me from crashing and burning totally. I did make mistakes like every other human being but I knew when to draw the line and cut my losses. That, I think, is also important.

Conclusion

Work is very important. We need it as much as we need air, to me anyway. We need to be part of something, to build something. That is how we grow and are happy with ourselves. So, just do something and be a part of something. It is much more beneficial than you know.
