Lies & Chains

I don’t bother calling people out when I catch them tell a lie especially if they are lying to me. I just watch them build their webs and get stuck in it.

The thing about lies is once you start, you begin a cycle and a whole chain of lies that never stops growing. It just continues to pile and get bigger until one day, you can’t keep track of the original lie.

Lies cause harm. It is a form of dishonesty especially when the person tells lies to get out of trouble. We do that a lot don’t we? Once we realise that we’ve messed up, we try to cover up by building a web of false narratives and/or promises instead of taking responsibility.

Would I ever call out someone if I catch them lie? Why would I? It’s absolutely none of my business how you decide to live your life. You’re an adult and so am I. I can’t lecture you on what is wrong or what is right.

“But Ray, what if your son is the one lying to you?”

Oh I’ll call him out immediately. I hate liars and I sure as hell don’t expect my son to be one. Because that is my child we are talking about. I’m responsible for his well-being especially in his early development stage. Making him understand the importance of staying truthful is critical.

Maintaining the side of truth has impact on the mental health. Lies distort how you see yourself and how you view the world. You can build a whole world of lies around you and make yourself vulnerable to people who lie for a living.

Staying truthful has a lot of positive effects on your mental health and it enables you be able to pick apart lies thrown your way. You’re alert and awake to even the most subtle details. That’s the importance of truth.

When you lie to others it becomes very easy to also lie to yourself. You believe what you want to believe when you very well know the truth. This comes back to bite you in the arse and you’ll have no one to blame but yourself.

Hence, the side of truth is the best side, but as I pointed out in the beginning, I don’t bother with adults who lie. Sooner or later, they’ll build a trap and fall into it. That’s the thing with lies. It’s a chain that only grows with time if you let it.

But why do people lie? There are tons of reasons as to why people resort to lying and most times it’s to get out of trouble. Then there’s lying for other kinds of benefits which we call dishonesty or fraud. I already pointed this out I believe.

Then we have people who lie to themselves. They create an image in their head to distort the truth. This can be as a result of past traumas or the inability to take full responsibility of one’s actions. Either way, it’s does no good.

Is there anything such as a white or harmless lie? I don’t think so. A lie is a lie. When we believe in harmless lies, soon we would believe all lies are harmless and it’s okay to tell them. That’s how the world we are living in today got to be so warped. We deny much of the truth and teach ourselves to accept and live with the lies. We see in the world today how far that has brought us. So no kind of lie is good. Never will be.

One lie spirals into a tough web of lies. It's a draining cycle and ever since i realized how it can get, all i ask myzelf is, 'what's even the worst that could happen if i just come open?'

Well, the truth is things may turn out for the worst, way more than you can imagine but that is why we avoid lying in the first place
